  • Every Student Is Known, Valued and Cared For The school environment at Terrey Hills is pivotal to the growth and development of our most important assets – our children and young people. Our school strives for excellence in teaching and learning, connecting on many levels to build trusting and respectful relationships for students to succeed. ‘Wellbeing itself is a holistic concept and efforts to promote student wellbeing demand a whole-school rather than a siloed approach. To be successful, wellbeing must be integrated into the school learning environment, the curriculum and pedagogy, the policies and procedures at schools, and the partnerships inherent within and outside schools including teachers, students, parents, support staff and community groups.’ CESE - ‘Every student is known, valued and cared for in our schools – an environmental scan’ https://www.cese.nsw.gov.au//images/stories/PDF/Wellbeing-environmental-scan.pdf

The Life Education program focuses on the benefits of healthy eating, physical activity, building positive and healthy relationships, cyber safety and empowering students to make educated decisions around alcohol. 2/3 Grasshoppers spent time investigating the benefits of healthy eating.

Teacher Professional Learning – Collaboration • Great teachers don’t just ‘happen ’; they are developed and keep on developing

throughout their professional life. • Effective collaboration is key to sharing successful and innovative teaching

    practices across the teaching profession.

This week Mrs Biefeld and Mrs Parker demonstrated how they have established quality pedagogical learning environments where students and teachers work productively in an environment clearly focused on learning.

Such pedagogy sets high and explicit expectations and develops positive relationships between teachers and students and among students.

Wellbeing Focus: ‘Speak nicely to each other by using positive words’.

  • Literacy and Screen Time 4 Corners recently focused on the effects of screen time on children’s literacy development. • Ensure young people read at least one book a month for pleasure. • For smaller children, encourage them to hand-write a letter to a loved one every week. • Get children to play outside, away from the screens, every day after school. • Be a role model: If you play with your own iPhone all the time, you cannot be the first one to tell your own children to

    stop doing what you do.

Thank you to Miss Kaporis, Miss Anderson, Michelle Wilson (Rebecca & Rachel’s mum) and Bruce for tackling the mamoth task of sorting through a mountain of dance costumes and decluttering / dejunking the hall storerooms and kitchen area. Before After

Congratulations to Class 1Bees for their inspirational poem about the importance of ‘Friendship’.

  • Congratulations to students from 2Butterflies for sharing their knowledge and understanding of fractions. Students were asked to create their own pizzas showing halves, quarters and eighths.

Congratulations to ‘aspiring’ author Hayley for sharing her passion for writing highly engaging and thought provoking short stories.

The Haunted School It was a school, like any other. There was the pungent smell of sweat and disinfectant; desks and tables; whiteboards

and projectors. Something wasn’t quite right … I realised it was the noise, or should I say the complete absence of

sound? I have never ever been in a dead silent school? This was the creepiest thing imaginable, particularly when the

classrooms were full of children … but still totally silent.

My friends’ faces looked like they had just seen a ghost; they were walking like slender man, straight and

emotionless. All of a sudden there was a loud, thunderous CRASH! One of my friends pulled down the projector to

the smart board! Like a starter’s gun, everyone, including the teachers, began destroying things, like tables, chairs,

    books and more!

This was very strange and terrifying to me because they did this in complete silence. I didn't know what was wrong

with them! I kept telling myself that everything would be alright and that everything would go back to normal after

Mathematics, but no, of course, this didn’t go back to normal, this day just got creepier and creepier...

“Why do I have to live in a world like this!?” I whinged.

On that very same afternoon, my best friend was supposed to come over and now I don’t know what to do with her if

she is still like this, how do I live like this!

From Mr Watson…… This week, students in years K-5 will be given the opportunity to list 4 peers who they wish to be in class with in 2020. All efforts will be made to accommodate their selection.

The final result after a month of serious moustache growing!

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0544a8a82da0f85-canteen3 NEWS from the committee: We’re thrilled to let you know we have a newly established canteen committee, which will be supporting the running of the canteen going forward, ensuring our kids have healthy and nutritious lunch options at school. The new committee is still finding its feet, but we look forward to communicating our vision and priorities for the canteen in the new year, once we have an established plan We do have one piece of exciting news to share already, regarding sustainability. Effective immediately, all sushi hand rolls will no longer be wrapped in plastic, which is a great step forward in reducing the plastic footprint of our canteen. We’re also working with sushi suppliers on eliminating the plastic soy sauce fish, and moving to eco-friendly packaging for baby rolls and salads in the new year. If there are any parents out there who are interested in being part of the canteen committee, please reach out to Amanda Young who is our Canteen Committee Convener. It’s an exciting time to join, with a lot of new energy and enthusiasm being poured in. Similarly, if you have ideas or thoughts around our canteen please reach out as we’re always open to hearing from you all. Please email [email protected] with ideas or for further information about joining. Finally – we are also opening up the volunteer rosters for Term 1 today, with some changes implemented to make it easier for more parents or grandparents to help out.
