Super Food:Watermelon

Crisp, coolwatermelon is a tastyand nutritious endingto a summer meal. This sweet relative ofthe cantaloupe, squash and cucumberis high in vitamins Aand C and lycopene. These antioxidantshelp prevent heartattack, stroke andcancer. Choosewatermelons that areheavy for their sizeand have a yellowisharea on one side, where the fruit restedon the ground. Thisindicates that thewatermelon wasvine-ripened and ismore likely to beflavorful and juicy.

Summer Is Good forYour Health

Hoosiers have good reason tocelebrate summer. After months in thebitter cold, it feels wonderful to getoutside for long stretches of time andenjoy the warm air and bright sunshine.

While it’s true that you must be carefulin the season’s heat and humidity, a littleadvance planning will make it possible toexperience all of the joys of summertime.

The sun has an important role inallowing the body to absorb vitamin D,so spending time outside has severalhealth benefits. Vitamin D can protectagainst a host of diseases, includingosteoporosis, heart disease and cancers ofthe breast, prostate and colon. Sunlightalso has hidden benefits—like protectingagainst depression and insomnia.

Older adults have more to gain fromadditional time outdoors, because as you

age, your body produces lessVitamin D than it did when youwere younger. Spending timeoutside allows the body to absorbthis essential nutrient. However, you need to take precautionsagainst heat exhaustion and heatstroke, which can be harmful orevenly deadly.

If it’s a really hot day, don’tplan your outside time around thehottest hours, which are usuallyfrom 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Considerwaking up early and taking a walkwith the sunrise, spend yourmorning working in the garden(like the plot-to-plate programbeing hosted by the Wellnessdepartment), or take advantage offamily summer activities byattending grandkids’ or friends’evening sporting events or picnics. As a general rule, senior adultsshould not practice outdoorphysical activity if it’s warmerthan 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Thosevery hot summer days are perfectfor staying inside andparticipating in stretchercise, TaiChi or a dance class.

An added benefit of spendingtime outside is the physicalactivity that usually accompaniesit. Time spent walking around theblock or planting seeds in the dirtcan support an active lifestyle.

Although sun exposure canprovide health benefits, it isimportant to protect against itsharmful rays. Wear plenty ofsunscreen, don a protective hatand consider carrying a hand-heldfan to make the most of thesummer days.

Glee Club Dazzles ResidentsOne of the most enjoyable events of the year is the

visit and performance by the Purdue Glee Club. InMay, the residents enjoyed an afternoon listening tothe Glee Club sing some of their long-time favoritesongs as well as some newer tunes. Their closingmedley recognized all the branches of the armedservices. It was truly heartwarming to watch thoseresidents who served our country stand in honor oftheir respective branches.

Jim Fisher shares about his Honor Flight.

Honor FlightThree Westminster residents were

among the many who participated inthe Honor Flight that left PurdueAirport for Washington, D.C., in theearly morning of May 5. All threeresidents served our country in WWII.

The Honor Flight transportsAmerica’s veterans to Washington,D.C., to visit memorials that honortheir service to and sacrifice for theircountry. Because America felt it wasimportant enough to build thememorials, the Honor Flight Networkbelieves it is equally important thatthose veterans actually get to visit and

experience their memorials. Each honoree takes a companion

to guide and care for him or herduring the trip. Bob Dale’s grandsonand Jim Fisher’s son went with them. Both residents thought it was extraspecial to experience Washington, especially their memorials, throughthe eyes of their loved ones.

Jerry Goetsch said that there wassomeone to greet them at eachdestination; and he had never beenmade to feel so special in his life. The highlight for Jim Fisher waswatching the changing of the guardat the Tomb of the Unknown Soldierin the National Cemetery. Thesoldier walked back and forth: hestood at each end of the tomb for 21seconds before walking back to theother end. This service is performed24/7/365 regardless of the weather.

All three residents agreed that theday was unforgettable and wouldsurely be willing to share theirexperiences.

A Cricket SymphonyThe sound of crickets chirping is relaxing for many people. As the months get

warmer, the crickets begin to make more music. Science can explain how thetemperature affects the number of chirps a cricket produces. There is even aformula for figuring out the temperature based on the number of chirps.

Crickets are cold-blooded and, because of this, they take on the temperature thatsurrounds them. As the temperature rises, the number of chirps a cricket producesalso increases.

To obtain a rough estimate of what the temperature is in degrees Fahrenheit, count the number of chirps you hear in 15 seconds. Add 37 to that number, andyou will have the approximate outside temperature.

While you enjoy the great outdoors, listen to the crickets and try using theformula to determine the temperature.

VolunteerCorner

Recognizing Dee Dee KnausDee Dee moved to this area 52 years

ago. Before retiring from her job, DeeDee always made time to volunteer. After moving to Westminster in 2011,she began offering her singing talentsfor special occasions and serving atassisted living birthday parties. For thelast two years she has delivered the ALmail six days a week. She loves theresponsibility of delivering the mailand says it gets her going in themorning.

Dee Dee recently learned howimportant logging her volunteer hoursis to the Village. In the past, much ofthis information has gone unrecorded.Logging volunteer hours is extremelyhelpful data. It provides statistics thatWestminster is required to report, itillustrates the degree of supportresidents give back, it is a strongindicator of the man-hours it requiresto maintain the Village and it givesWestminster the opportunity torecognize their volunteers and expressthe appreciation they deserve.

A huge thank you to Dee Dee for herinvestment into Westminster.

Mother’s Day Tea aHuge Success

The Mother’s Day Tea was enjoyedby more than 160 guests. The guestspeaker, Angie Klink, spoke about hernew book, The Deans Bible.

The book highlighted five women atPurdue and how they knitted a sacredbond through a secret symbol—a Bible.Dorothy C. Stratton, Helen B.Schleman, M. Beverley Stone, Barbara I.Cook and Betty M. Nelson created newopportunities for women and becameconduits for change, fosteringopportunities for all people.

Each woman was a legendary deanof women or dean of students.Collectively, they wove a sisterhood ofmutual support in their commonpursuit of shared human rights andequality for all.

Several guests at the tea were able toshare their own stories of theirrelationships with these strong, courageous women.

Spring Fever Hits in Assisted Living

Men vs. Women Competition and theWinning Airplane

“Always remember you’re unique, just like everyoneelse.”

—Alison BoulterSpring fever has finally caught up with us in Assisted

Living. Everyone seems to have a renewed energy thatcomes with this time of year; and, we have enjoyed gettingoutside again.

The month of May began with a celebration of Cinco deMayo followed by a visit from the Columbian Park Zoo,music with Kenny Holcomb, a Mother’s Day Tea and anentertaining afternoon with the Purdue Glee Club.

A big thank you goes out to Terry Smith, owner ofRubia Flower Market, for sharing her love of flowers, experiences, and talent with the residents this month.

A Musical Month in the Health Center

Lloyd Hammerton and Gimble A Cappella

We hope you enjoyed the month of May with the birdssinging, flowers blooming, warm weather and sweetsunshine. This past month, the Health Center enjoyed anouting to Dog ’n Suds and Arni’s.

It was also a month of music! The men received specialattention from Gary’s new men’s group, Gentlemen’s RoundTable. The residents were treated to a special performanceby the University of Michigan College of Literature,Science and Arts called Gimble A Cappella; and enjoyedmusic by local favorite, Dave Laskey. On a sad musicalnote, the residents had to say good-bye to their musictherapist who is moving out of state with her family.

We celebrated Mother’s Day last month and lookforward to Father’s Day this month. We are also excited forvan outings, outdoor celebrations in the courtyard, musical performances, games and much more!
