Ash Wednesday and Lenten Opportunities

This week Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. This is a time of preparation for us to encounter Jesus as He really is, a time to reform our lives by giving up (and hopefully removing from our lives), those things that lead away from God’s plan for us, to choose and integrate into our lives those dispositions and virtues that lead us toward God; in short, it’s a time of “rending our hearts”. Be brave, rend your heart; live with your heart rent open to Jesus as His disciple. There is a temptation just to “pick a penance” for Lent, to give a half-hearted attempt at keeping a “rule” the Church or my parents make me do, and end up not changed at all. Choose a gamechanger. Choose something that challenges you that draws you into relationship with Jesus. Ash Wednesday we have the chance to mark this definitive moment with ashes at 8am Mass and 7pm Mass There are confessions available everyday at 7:30-7:50am, the normal weekend schedule, usually with 2 confessors on Saturday afternoon. We’ll have a penance service at the school on Weds 4 March and a parish penance service on Tues 10 March at 7pm. Holy Week confessions mon-weds 9-10am and Good Friday Confessions from 3-5pm. Every Wednesday of Lent after Ash Wednesday we will offer a 6pm Lenten Mass to give you an evening opportunity for Mass during the week. There is Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every morning but Sunday from 6:30-7:20am and Friday’s after 8am Mass until Benediction at 8pm. Friday’s there will be Stations of the Cross at 2:15pm with the school children and 6:30pm at the church. On Good Friday, the 8th grade will lead us in a Living Stations of the Cross at 2pm, followed by a sung Chaplet of Divine Mercy to begin the Novena, before confessions begin. In these next few days as you make your final decisions about how you will engage Lent, I encourage you to choose a “penance” or sacrifice that builds your relationship with God and others, to take one more decisive step as His disciple. I am praying for you and look forward to walking with you in this season of opportunity.

St. Vincent de Paul - St. Rose Conference

February 23, 2020

(7th Sunday in Ordinary Time–Year A)

In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges us by saying: “You

must be perfected as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

This month, through your gifts, the Society of St.

Vincent de Paul was able to assist families by providing food,

funds for utility and rent bills, etc. Thank You!

*******************************************

Our pantry needs canned meats.

Thank you for your continued support as we attempt

to provide groceries for 400-699 people each month! If you know of a neighbor or friend needing food

assistance, please refer them to SVDP at 503.235.8431 for help! St. Rose will be providing Rice Bowls again this year. Lent is a time for prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Pick-up a Rice Bowl at the back of the church and collect coins throughout the Lenten season. At the end of Lent, you can bring your coins to St. Rose. Any donation you give will help lift families and communities out of poverty. Lent Opportunity: You are invited to join us for Stations of the Cross at 6:30 pm on Friday, the 28th of February. This will be followed by a Meal Shared with Fellow Parishioners (Simple Soup Supper) at 7:00 pm. Our High School Youth will be hosting the Soup Supper. Please see flyer posted in the foyer. Thank you for participating in the 2020 Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal last weekend. Our parish goal is $25,388.37. If you have not already done so, it is not too late. The Neocatechumenal Way is offering Catechesis for Youth and Adults. Continues Mondays and Thursdays from 7 – 8 pm in the conference room of the basement.

St. Rose Book Club will be meeting, February 27th at 6:30 pm at Connie Manning’s home. Join St. Rose Parish and the Serra Club to pray for Vocation Director, Fr. Jeff Eirvin, for priestly vocations, vocations to consecrated life and the vocation of marriage. Pick a day in the week, and please pray an hour or offer your intentions at Mass. Faith Enrichment Another resource now available to parishioners, is an online catechetical program through the University of Steubenville. There, they have 12, 1 hr. courses (and more) that take you through college level classes and are actually taught by the best professors at Steubenville, and you can go at your own pace. It would be awesome if many adults took up this opportunity and then wanted to get involved with our youth ministry programs so we can better prepare our youth to engage the world with Faith. Go to: franciscanathome.com to check out this resource. The parish has purchased a parish membership which allows you to sign up for free. Call the parish office with questions. Have you checked out OUR GIFT TO YOU? Your own formed.org subscription! This parish gift provides you with at-home access to the best Catholic content around. Look for audio talks, movies, eBooks, and video-based studies from trusted providers like the Augustine Institute, Ignatius Press, Catholic Answers and more—all from the comfort of home and on one, convenient website. MASTER PLAN UPDATE: You may have noticed some scaffolding and construction happening around the church. By the providence of God and the charity of an anonymous donor, we received a donation of $500,000 this summer for stained glass window restoration, exterior repairs and capital improvements as they relate to our Master Plan. This generous donation made the repairs you’re seeing possible. The work is expected to continue during business hours for the next four weeks. To maintain the safety of students, staff, daily Mass goers and passers-by, our contractor will close portions of our Alameda and 54th sidewalks during work hours. Sidewalks will re-open each weekend to accommodate Saturday and Sunday foot traffic. This project is part of the campus-wide Master Plan we developed in 2017—a strategy that guides us in being good stewards of what’s been handed down to us and addresses the needs of our aging buildings. The plan provides a concept for a revitalized campus: a restored church and a partially rebuilt school that share a common entry, elevator and ground-level social space, plus a new gymnasium. A committee is currently working through logistics of phase one for this long-term project. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.

Parish Library / Resources

A Message from the St. Rose Parish Library: Please take a look around your home for any library books that you have read and not yet returned. In addition, consider donating a relevant Catholic book that you have read and want to share with others. The library has accepted dozens of donated books from parishioners and the collection is becoming quite impressive. For questions about donating new or used titles to the library, please contact the parish library volunteer; Todd Rosenquist (503) 869-5077. Tech Support: As a Knight of Columbus, I provide assistance for those in need. My parents Dave and Kathie are both active members of St. Rose, and I also wish to serve our parish by offering my technical services to the parish community. I am familiar with most windows operating systems, and mobile IOS

and Android platforms. I will be able to assist with new program installations and modifications & troubleshooting; i.e. installing a new printer, or Bluetooth / keyboard connection to a tablet, as well as assistance with antivirus and malware protection. What is Human Trafficking? Human trafficking is a horrific crime against the fundamental rights and dignity of the human person. The United Nations Protocol on Human Trafficking defines it as "the recruitment, transportation, harboring or receipt of persons by means of force, fraud or coercion." The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Committee on Migration designated February 8 as an annual day of prayer for survivors and victims of human trafficking. February 8 is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, who was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan and Italy. Once Josephine was freed, she dedicated her life to sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and comforting the poor and suffering. According to law enforcement, some signs to look for include people who work and live in the same place, or who owe a debt to their employers or whose employers have control over their immigration documents. Trafficked people could have signs of trauma, fatigue or injuries, or they could be withdrawn or show signs of censored communication. (Catholic Sentinel July 5-8, 2013). How can I help? Visit www.usccb.org/stopslavery to learn more about how to identify a potential victim and what you can do to help. We must unite our efforts to free victims and stop this crime that has become ever more aggressive, that threatens not just individuals, but the foundational values of society.” Pope Francis

Abortion Pill (RU486)

A recently updated FDA report revealed that, as of December 31, 2018, there have been 24 deaths associated with the "abortion pill" Mifeprex (the two-drug combination of mifepristone and misoprostol), rather than the earlier figure of 22 deaths. To date, nearly 4,200 "adverse events" have been detailed, including 24 deaths, 97 ectopic pregnancies, 1042 hospitalizations, 599 blood transfusions, and 412 infections. A 2011 peer-review survey of 22 studies showed abortion increases the likelihood of depression, anxiety, and reckless behavior such as alcoholism, drug use, and suicide.

Dr. Donna Harrison of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists laments, "These 24 women are otherwise healthy women who are now dead because they took Mifeprex. [Abortionists are] giving you Mifeprex to kill your baby, and sometimes it kills you." A Planned Parenthood study found that at least one woman is seriously injured from the abortion pill daily.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, in 2014, the abortion pill accounted for 31 percent of all non-hospital abortions and 45 percent of abortions before nine weeks gestation. Millions of unborn babies have died worldwide as a result of this deadly drug combination. www.lifenews.com

Should you encounter a woman with early regret after taking RU486, consider helping her access the Abortion Pill Reversal network by 24/7 call or chat. The helpline number is 877-558-0333 and the chat is at abortionpillreversal.com. In addition to possibly saving a baby, you also will be helping to spare a mother from a lifetime of regret.www.ortl.org/2018/12/hope-for-abortion-reversal/

SVDP AT ST. ROSE

The St. Rose Conference of St. Vincent de Paul started in 1931...88 years ago. As Vincentians, we are asked to serve the poor within the boundaries of our Parish. This may include people who are experiencing material poverty caused by unemployment, sickness or disability, other social conditions or social poverty caused by aging, loneliness, or isolation. We have a motto: “No work of Charity is foreign to the Society.” These are the things we do:

• Make home deliveries of food several days per week • Pay for utilities and/or rent when requested • Offer fresh produce, bread, eggs, meat, etc. to our friends at Hollywood East, where

most of our clients reside, every Wednesday in a shopping style Fresh Food Pantry feeding 45-65 people weekly

• Offer non-perishable goods like soup, sauces, pasta, canned veggies, fruits, juices, and health and bath aids to our friends at HWE every Thursday in a shopping style pantry feeding 40-50 people weekly.

• Organize and implement the annual St. Rose Food Drive in November. • Organize, implement, and deliver Christmas food boxes to over 100 families needing

assistance. • Offering financial support to other conferences needing financial support.

Annually, we, as Vincentians, are asked to renew our commitment to:

• Witness to Jesus’s boundless love for the poor, the lonely, the suffering and deprived, those without faith and those who feel unloved.

• Firmly resolve to treasure warm friendship and unity within the Society • Seek and find the forgotten, the suffering or the deprived so that we can bring them

Christ’s love • Be generous with our time, our possessions, and ourselves in our mission of charity.

At St. Rose we feed approximately 400-500 people each month. In December that number swells with the distribution of over 100 food boxes to families in Portland. We also provide rent or utilities assistance when our budget allows. At this time both our cupboards and coffers are getting pretty bare. Please consider donating food items for our pantry or cash/check in the attached envelope so that we may continue to support the poor in our neighborhood. The back of this flyer lists suggested donations for every week of the year. Of course, anything on the list at any time is also much appreciated! Thank you for your past and continued support of this important mission at St. Rose. May God bless each of you! Please consider joining this wonderful mission. Please contact Karen Pinder at [email protected] for more information. We would LOVE to have you as part of the St. Rose Conference of St. Vincent de Paul!
