TORAH THOUGHT: On the first day of Shavuot we intro-duce the Torah reading by reciting Akdamut, which was written by Rabbi Meir bar Yitzchak (Nehorai) of Orléans, who was a Chazan in Worms, Germany, (died ca.

1095) during the Cru-sades. This is the beauty of this song, as summa-rized by Rabbi Edward Davis.

“If the firmament were parchment and the trees

were the quills of the scribes and all the waters of the sea were ink and human beings could write the praise of Hashem, it would still not be sufficient to describe the greatness of the Almighty and His splendor. And yet Ha-shem chose us, the Jewish people, to be His nation.

“We are the ones who can say Kedushah every morning and evening. Even the angels do not have the freedom to sing the praises to Hashem as frequently as we do. We yearn for Yerushalayim to be rebuilt and the ingath-ering of the exiled and the gates of Heaven to be opened and all of Hashem’s splendor to be revealed. Then, Ha-shem will make a great banquet for the righteous.

Fortunate is he who is strong in his belief of Hashem.”

Rabbi Marc Spivak

On Shavuot, we read the story of Ruth, the Moabite woman, and ancestor of King David, and the Mosiach for whom we await. She is Judaism’s most famous convert and she showed her loyalty to her mother-in-law Naomi and to Juda-ism with the words, “for wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you sleep, I will sleep. Your nation is my nation, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and

there I will be buried. “ The Holiday is also the anniversary of the giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai and many Jews will stay up all night studying Torah in commemoration of the event.

Dairy meals are the order of the day, although some people have the custom of eating meat on the second day of Shavuot.

In shul, we read the Ten Com-mandments, and on Shavuot, we recite Yizcor (on the second day in the diaspora).

SMILE TIME: Mortimer H. Stein, having absconded with $500,000, stepped into a time machine, went seven years into the future, and stepped out again, feeling that the statute of limitations now protected him from trial. He was arrested anyway, and the

prosecution claimed that in order to avoid trial, the criminal ought to have lived through seven years in constant appre-hension of arrest -- that being considered the adequate pun-ishment that made sense out of a statute of limitations. The defense contended that the law said nothing about living through seven years. It only said that seven years had to pass. The defendant had hidden in time, so to speak, and that was no different from hiding in space, unless the law was amended to make it so. The judge finally handed down his decision in favor of the defendant. It was in six words only, for he said, "A niche in time saves Stein."
