1) Background informationThe word 'Pentecost' comes from the Greek; it simply means 'fiftieth' . It is celebrated on the 50th day from Easter Sunday. Historically it comes from to the Jewish harvest festival of Shavuot or the day, fifty days after the Exodus, on which God gave the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai, Pentecost now celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles as described in the Book of Acts, Chapter 2.

2) Introduction Review Jesus’ resurrection. What happened to Jesus body? It disappeared from the tomb. Christians believe Jesus physical body came back to life, but this cannot be. He appeared through closed doors to the disciples. He disappeared when he met two disciples on the road to Emmaus, when he broke the bread. He also disappeared when Mary Magdalene recognized Jesus’ voice. A physical body cannot appear and disappear. Only a person’s spirit can do this. The disciples were given a special experience.

3) Storya) Jesus helped the disciples catch fishb) Jesus chose Peter to be the leader

c) On the 40th day Jesus ascended in the skyd) On the 50th day the disciples received the Holy Spirit from God. First, they heard the sound of

wind. Then tongues of fire appeared over their heads They were filled with God’s love and felt happy. They spoke in different languages. This day is called the day of the Pentecost

Because people didn’t listen to Jesus and he was crucified, he couldn’t finish what he started. Jesus’ spirit appeared to his disciples for 40 days after he resurrected. He wanted them to continue what he started, to teach people the way to God and find many followers. Jesus promised they would receive help from God. The Holy Spirit filled them with love, happiness, faith, hope and courage. It gave them the power to tell people about Jesus and the power to cure sick people. On that day they went out and baptized 3,000 new followers of Jesus.

4) Questions1. How do we know Jesus physical body did not come back to life?He appeared and disappeared in closed rooms and he has not been on earth for 2,000 years

2. Why did Jesus return to the earth for 40 days?He returned from spirit world so his work on earth could continue, through the disciples. He gave them new hope and faith, so they could spread Jesus’ message and find more followers

3. Why did Jesus say it was God’s plan that he die and be resurrected? It was a secondary plan in case the people rejected Jesus. By giving his life willingly he demonstrated the highest level of love - to die for those you love. He opened a place in spiritual world, free from Satan, called paradise. Anyone who believes and follows Jesus can also be with Jesus in paradise.

4. What happened on the day of the Pentecost? The disciples received the Holy Spirit from God:- First, they heard the sound of wind- Tongues of fire appeared over their heads - They were filled with God’s love and felt happy- They spoke in different languages

John 21:1-17

Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish

Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberias. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. "I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?" "No," they answered.

He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you have just caught."

Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Jesus Reinstates Peter

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."

Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?" He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep."

The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you."

Acts 1:1-11

Jesus Taken Up Into Heaven

In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?"

He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven."

Acts 2:1-12

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?"
