MS2 TRUST Scholar Caroline Pihl Presents Project to RUOP Steering Committee
MS2 TRUST Scholar Caroline Pihl presented her RUOP project to the RUOP Steering Committee in
November. Her project, “Horticulture Therapy: Building Community Belonging and Self-Worth for
Individuals with Disabilities in Libby, Montana”, brought together community volunteers and healthcare
staff to provide a space for disabled residents to make new friendships, spend time outside, and grow
flowers and vegetables. Libby, MT is the county seat and most populous city in Lincoln County, an area with
the highest unemployment rate and one of the highest disability rates in the state. Caroline recognized that
disability can worsen depression, anxiety, and poor self-worth, and spearheaded this horticulture program
to help stave off these problems, and provide a safe space for therapy participants to interact.
First-Year TRUST Scholars Participate in Annual Leadership Retreat
In June, eleven Montana TRUST Scholars as well as nine Scholars from Idaho and Washington attended
a three-day retreat on Flathead Lake. Clinical Deans from Montana, Idaho, Eastern and Western
Washington, along with the Montana TRUST Director, hosted the retreat that focused on leadership
awareness and training on population health advocacy in rural/underserved settings. Plans are
underway to continue this retreat for 2015 and Wyoming TRUST Scholars will also participate this year.
