of obedience. But if we really love

God, as the saints did, we will go

beyond duty, we will make heroic

efforts to do what pleases God.

We are surrounded by ordinary

Christians, people who do only

what they have to do. We need the

example of Christians, whether

canonized or not, who try to do

more than they are asked to do.

Where do we meet such people?

Open the Bible and you will find

countless men and women who

went beyond the call of duty and

still considered themselves

“unworthy servants.” Read the

story of St. Peter. Follow the

journeys of St. Paul.

Read the lives of those who served

the Lord in a heroic way – the

saints. Every one of them felt they

were unworthy servants. Read in

our Catholic publications, in print

and on-line, about lay people who

are doing outstanding work for

Christ and the family of God. They

too maintain they are unprofitable

servants.

Note the people in our parish who

are always volunteering to help

out, wherever they are needed: By

When St. Francis de

nineteen years old,

he became seriously

ill. At that time,

students practiced

on cadavers, corpses

generally stolen from graves.

Thinking he was dying, Francis

told his favorite teacher: “Sir,

arrange my funeral as you see fit.

I ask only that after my funeral

you give my body to medical

students.” “But that would be a

disgrace to your family,” objected

the teacher. The young saint

insisted: “It is very consoling to me,

as I lie dying, to think that if I

have been a useless servant during

life, I will at least be of some good

after death.”

Here was a learned and holy young

man who felt he had accomplished

nothing. All the saints were like

that. They called themselves, in

the words of today’s Gospel:

“Unworthy servants.”

How do you and I fit in today’s

Gospel? All of us are servants of

God. We do what we are told - out

lecturing, serving as Extraordinary

Ministers of Holy Communion,

participating in Parish Clean-up

projects, being members of Parish

Committees, donating food to the

poor, teaching in Faith Formation

and the CYO; by using their God-

given talents in ways that make a

difference to all of us.

Jesus told today’s parable to His

apostles. He wanted them to be

above average in serving Him. The

apostles got the message. They

gave their lives for Christ.

Today Jesus is calling us to make

special efforts to serve Him. He

gives us the help to do this. He

could have saved us in a much

easier way. He chose to go to the

lengths of love – by giving His life.

His suffering and death, renewed

on the altar, are the inspiration

and strength for our heroic efforts.

Ask Him to strengthen your faith

and help you to grow in love.

God bless you!

The Couple-to-Couple League provides

thorough Natural Family Planning (NFP)

training in an engaging three session main

course and offers supplemental training for

postpartum and premenopause couples,

upon request. NFP is a wonderful way for engaged and married couples to

enrich their marriage and avoid the health risks associated with artificial

contraception. The Sympto-Thermal Method will be taught in the greater

Ann Arbor area during the sessions listed below. The main course fulfills

the diocesan NFP marriage prep requirement. For questions, con-

tact [email protected].

NFP Support Group

Local CCL teachers have launched free and informal NFP support groups

to provide encouragement and additional help. Both groups will meet at

Cultivate Coffee & Taphouse in Ypsilanti. For more details, please visit our

Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ccl.annarbor/) or contact Kelly

Kopinski ([email protected]).

Good Reputation

What is priceless, but costs

nothing?

Both the rich and poor; the wise

and simple can have it.

Those who have it have everything.

It is something that no thief can

still, moth ruin, neither fire nor

flood can destroy.

It can take a lifetime to build up,

but can be lost in an instant.

If it is lost, no amount of effort, no

amount of money can ever buy it

back.

Live the Liturgy Inspiration for the Week

All of the violence and unrest we

regularly witness in our world can

easily distress us. We can also find

ourselves wondering how long it

will take before God intervenes

and does something about it. Then

we remember our call to disciple-

ship and spreading the Good News

of the Gospel. We recall the perse-

cutions the early disciples endured

and the fate of so many martyrs

throughout history, both past and

present. It is not God’s responsibil-

ity to fix our mess but ours. God

has given us the power of love and

a strength of endurance that

comes from Him alone. Our re-

quest of God becomes that of the

disciples: “Increase our faith.” It is

our task to stand up for the values

of the Gospel and live them re-

gardless of the price.

Sharing the Gospel

Being part of a family means that

everybody works together. Your

parents work to give you a good

place to live, food to eat, and

clothes to wear. You probably help

with jobs around the house, too,

like picking up your toys, taking

the garbage out, or setting the

table. Each person in the family

has work to do. The same is true in

God’s family. God has special work

for us to do, especially to help

others. Find happiness in your

work.

Prayer

Dear God, help me enjoy helping

my family and others.

Calling all saints… 5th grade and under!

This year Trunk or Treat will be held on November 3rd at the 10:30 mass.

Fifth graders and under are invited to dress up as their favorite saint and

celebrate Mass! Following Mass there will be an activity in the gym for half

an hour while parents decorate their cars in the church parking lot and get

ready to pass out treats to our little heavenly heroes!

If there is anything you need please do not hesitate to email

me at [email protected]

or call me at 7346748650.

I look forward to serving you in any way I can!

American Heritage Girls is searching for a

few good women or men to fill leadership

roles within our troop, MI0413. If you enjoy

working with youths and would like to be

more involved in the Parish this may be what you are looking for! You do

not have to have a daughter in the program, just a volunteering spirit! If

you are interested or would like more information please contact

Angela Vinarcik, Troop Coordinator, at 734-697-7756

or [email protected]. Thank you and God bless you!

Tired from running around all day?

Can't take one more errand?

Want to just relax and chat at the

end of a busy Monday?

Want to pray with other parents?

Come and check out

Parent Café!

Parent Café is an informal small

group that meets during Faith For-

mation classes on Monday eve-

nings. We come together to share

our day and pray for each

other. There is coffee available and

sometimes a snack (if someone

feels up to bringing one). We

mostly relax and enjoy each other's

company. We'd love to have more

parents join us.

“Resting in prayer is especially important

for families. It is in the family that we first

learn how to pray. And don’t forget when the

family prays together, it remains together.

This is important. There we come to know

God, to grow into men and women of faith,

to see ourselves as members of God’s greater

family, the Church. In the family we learn how to love, to

forgive, to be generous and open, not closed and selfish. We

learn to move beyond our own needs, to encounter others and

share our lives with them. That is why it is so important to

pray as a family! That is why families are so important in

God’s plan for the Church!”

~ Pope Francis 01/16/2013
