Getting Started
Before mounting the nvi, see the Important Safety and Product Information guide forinformation about laws pertaining to windshield mounting.
Step 1: Mount Your nvi1. Plug the vehicle power cable into the back of your nvi.2. Snap the cradle onto the suction cup arm.3. Remove the clear plastic from the suction cup.
Clean and dry your windshield and the suctioncup with a lint-free cloth. Press the suction cup
rmly on the windshield.4. Flip the lever back toward the windshield.5. Fit the bottom of your nvi into the cradle.
6. Tilt your nvi back until it snaps into place.7. Plug the other end of the vehicle power cable
into a power outlet in your vehicle. Your unitshould turn on automatically if it is plugged inand the vehicle is running.
8. If you are using a traf c receiver in Europe,connect the external antenna to the traf creceiver and secure the external antenna tothe windshield using the suction cups. (Traf creceivers are included in some nvi 205 and205W series packages.)

Step 2: Con gure YournviTo turn your nvi on, slide theP w key to the left. Follow theon-screen instructions. To turn yournvi off, slide the P w key tothe left.
Step 3: AcquireSatellites1. Go outdoors to an open area,
away from tall buildings and trees.
2. Turn on your nvi.Acquiring satellite signals can take afew minutes. The bars indicatesatellite strength. When at least oneof the bars is green, your nvi has
acquired satellite signals. Now youcan select a destination and navigateto it.
Step 4: Use Your nvi
GPS satellite strength Bluetooth technology status
(Available on the nvi 215,215W, 265, 265W, 275, and285W.)
Battery status Current time. Touch to change
time settings. Touch to nd a destination. Touch to view the map.
Touch to make a call when connected to a compatiblemobile phone.

settings and Help.

such as restaurants, hotels, and autoservices.

Getting Started
Adding a StopYou can add a stop (called a ViaPoint) to your route. The nvi givesyou directions to the Via Point andthen to your nal destination.
1. With a route active, touchMenu >Where to? .
2. Search for the extra stop.3. Touch Go!.4. Touch Add as Via Point to add
this stop before your destination.Touch Set as new Destination to
make this your nal destination.
Taking a Detour 1. With a route active, touchMenu.2. Touch Detour .
The nvi attempts to get you back on your original route asquickly as possible. If the routeyou are currently taking is the onlyreasonable option, the nvi might notcalculate a detour.
Stopping the Route1. With a route active, touchMenu.2. Touch Stop .
Adjusting the VolumeFrom the Menu page, touchV lum .Touch and to adjust the
volume. Touch the box next toMu to mute all audio.
Locking the ScreenTo prevent accidental screen touches,
slide theP w key to the right( ). To unlock the screen, slide theP w key to the center position.

Where to?
The Where to? menu providesseveral different categories you canuse to search for locations. To learnhow to perform a simple search, see page 4.
Finding an Address note: Depending on the versionof the maps loaded on your nvi, the button names can change and somesteps could be ordered differently.
1. Touch Where to? > Address .2. Change the state, country, or
province, if necessary.3. Touch Spell City, enter the
city/postal code, and touch Done.Select the city/postal code in thelist. (Not all map data providespostal code searching.) If you areunsure of the city, touch SearchAll.
4. Enter the number of the address,and touch Done.
5. Enter the street name, and touchDone.
6. Select the correct street in the list,if necessary.
7. Touch the address, if necessary.
Setting a Home LocationSet your home location for the placeyou return to most often.
1. To set your home location, touch
Where to? > Go Home.2. Select an option:
Enter your address. Use your current location. Choose from a list of recently
found locations.Going HomeTo navigate home after you have setyour home location, touchWh

Changing Your HomeLocationTo set a different home location:1. Touch Tools > My Data > Set
Home Location .2. Select an option:
Enter your address. Use your current location. Choose from a list of recently
found locations.
To edit your home location:1. Touch Where to? > Favorites >
All Favorites > Home.2. Touch Edit, enter your changes,
and touch Done.
If you delete your home location,you canreset it by following thesteps on page 6.
Go! Page Options
Touch to view the route on themap. Touchg ! to create a turn-by-
turn route to this location. TouchM p to view this
location on the map. TouchS v to save thislocation to your Favorites.
If a mobile phone with Bluetoothwireless technology is connected,touch the phone number to call thislocation.

Where to?
Finding a Place bySpelling the NameIf you know the name of thedestination you are looking for,you can spell it using the on-screenkeyboard. You can also enter letterscontained in the name to narrow the
search.1. Touch Where to? > Points of
Interest > Spell Name .2. Using the on-screen keyboard,
enter letters of the name of your
destination. Touch Done.Using the On-ScreenKeyboardWhen an on-screen keyboardappears, touch a letter or number toenter it.
Touch to add a space. Touch
and to move the cursor. Touchto delete a character. Touch andhold to erase the entire entry.
TouchM d to select the keyboardlanguage mode. Touch&?% to
enter special characters, such as punctuation marks.
Searching Near AnotherLocation1. Touch Where to? > Near.2. Select an option:

Your nvi stores the last 50 of yourrecent nds in the Recently Foundlist. The most-recently viewed placesappear at the top of the list. TouchWh ? > r c ly F u dtoview your recently found items.
Deleting Recently FoundPlacesTo remove all places from theRecently Found list, touchCl >
Y s.note: When you touchCl , allitems in the list are removed. This process does not delete the actual place from your nvi.
FavoritesYou can save places in yourF v s so you can quickly ndthem and create routes to them.Your home location is also stored inF v s.
Saving Your CurrentLocationFrom the Map page, touch .TouchS v L c to save yourcurrent location.
Saving Places You Find1. From the Go! page, touch Save .2. Touch OK. The place is saved in
Favorites .

2. Select the category and thelocation you want to edit.
3. Touch Edit.4. Touch an item to edit:
Change Name enter a newname, and touch Done.
Attach Photo select apicture that you have loadedon your nvi or on a memorycard to assign to the location.
Change Map Symbol toucha new symbol used to markthis location on the map.
Change Phone Number enter a phone number, andtouch Done.
Change Categories selectanother category for thelocation.
Deletetouch Yes to removethis item from the Favorites
list.
Finding a Place Usingthe MapUse the Browse Map page to viewdifferent parts of the map. TouchWh ? > B ws M p.
Tips for Browsing the Map
Touch the map, and drag to viewdifferent parts of the map. Touch and to zoom in and
out. Touch any object on the map.
An arrow appears pointing at theobject. TouchS v to save this location. Touchg ! to navigate to the
location.
If the GPS mode is off, touchSL c to set your location to theselected location. (See page 33.)

Where to?
Entering CoordinatesIf you know the geographiccoordinates of your destination, youcan use your nvi to navigate to yourdestination using the latitude andlongitude coordinates. This can beespecially helpful when geocaching.
1. Touch Where to? > Coordinates .2. Touch a box to enter a coordinate.3. Touch Format to change the type
of coordinates. Because differentmaps and charts use different
coordinate formats, the nviallows you to select the correctcoordinate format for the type ofmap you are using.
4. Enter the coordinates, and touchNext.
Using Photo NavigationYou can load pictures with locationinformation onto your nvi and thencreate routes to them.
1. Go to http://connect.garmin.com/photos (not available in all areas)
to download pictures with locationinformation.2. Follow instructions on the Web
site to select and load pictures.3. Touch Where To? > Favorites
> Photos . Pictures with locationinformation are listed.
4. Touch a picture.
Navigating Off RoadIf you are not following roadways
as you navigate, use Off Roadmode. Toucht ls > S s >n v > r u P f c>off r d > oK .
Walking to a DestinationIf you are walking to yourdestination, use Pedestrian modeto optimize your route for walking.Touch t ls > S s > Sys m >Us M d > P d s > oK .

Using the Map
Your route is marked with amagenta line. As you travel, yournvi guides you to your destinationwith voice prompts, arrows on themap, and directions at the top ofthe map. A checkered ag marksyour destination. If you departfrom the original route, your nvirecalculates the route and providesnew directions.
tiP: A speed limit icon could appearas you travel on major roadways.This icon displays the current speedlimit of the roadway.
Touch to view the next turn.
Touch to view the turn list. Touch to zoom in and zoom out.
Touch to view the Where Am I? page.
Touch to view the trip computer.

Using the Map
Trip Computer The trip computer displays yourcurrent speed and provides helpfulstatistics about your trip.
To view the trip computer, touch theSp d eld on the map.
If you make frequent stops, leave thenvi turned on so it can accuratelymeasure elapsed time during the trip.
Resetting the TripComputer Reset the trip computer before beginning a trip. From the map,touch theSp d eld. Touchr st p to reset the information on thetrip computer. Touchr s M x to
reset the maximum speed.
Turn ListWhen you are navigating a route,the turn list displays turn-by-turninstructions for your entire route andthe distance between turns.
Touch the text bar on the top of themap to open the turn list. Touch aturn on the list to view the next turnfor that turn. TouchSh w M p toview the entire route on the browsemap page.
Next TurnWhen you are navigating a route, thenext turn shows the turn on the mapand the distance and time left beforeyou reach the turn.
To view an upcoming turn on themap, touch the turn indicator on themap, or touch any turn from the turnlist.

Making Hands-Free
Phone CallsBluetooth wireless technology isavailable on the nvi 215, 215W,265, 265W, 275, and 285W.
Using Bluetooth wireless technology,your nvi can connect to yourmobile phone to become a hands-free device. To determine whetheryour mobile phone with Bluetoothtechnology is compatible with the
nvi, go towww.garmin.com/bluetooth.
Bluetooth wireless technologyestablishes a wireless link betweendevices, such as a mobile phone and
the nvi. The rst time you use twodevices together you must pairthem by establishing a relationshipusing a PIN or passkey. After theinitial pairing, the two devices can
connect automatically each time youturn them on.
note: You might have to set yourmobile phone to connect to the nviautomatically when it is turned on.
Pairing Your PhoneTo pair and connect, your phone andthe nvi must be turned on and bewithin 10 meters of each other.
Initiate pairing from your nvi orfrom your phone. Refer to your phone instructions.
To pair using your phonesettings:1. Enable the Bluetooth setting
on your nvi. TouchTools >Settings > Bluetooth .
2. Select Enabled .3. Enable the Bluetooth component
on your phone. This might be in amenu called Settings, Bluetooth,
Connections, or Hands-free.

4. Initiate a search for Bluetoothdevices.
5. Select the nvi from the list ofdevices.
6. Enter the nvi Bluetooth PIN(1234) into your phone.
To pair using the nvi settings:
1. From the Menu page, touchTools > Settings > Bluetooth >Add.
2. Enable the Bluetooth componenton your phone, and enableFind Me/Discoverable/Visiblemode. These settings might bein a Bluetooth, Connections, orHands-free menu.
3. Touch OK on the nvi.4. Select your phone, and touch OK.
5. Enter the nvi Bluetooth PIN(1234) in your phone.
When your phone is connected toyour nvi, you are ready to make phone calls. TouchPh to access
the Phone menu.
When you turn on the nvi, it tries toconnect to the last phone to which it
was connected.
note: Not all phones support allfeatures of the nvi Phone menu.
Receiving a CallWhen you get a call, the IncomingCall window opens. Toucha sw to answer the call. Touchi toignore the call and stop your phonefrom ringing.
The internal microphone is in thefront of the nvi; speak normally.

Using Call WaitingWhen you are on a call and you
receive a second call (call waiting),the Incoming Call window appears.Toucha sw to answer the call.The rst call is placed on hold.
To switch between calls:1. Touch > Switch To .2. Touch End Call to hang up. This
does not disconnect the call onhold.
Phone MenuFrom the Menu page, touchPh to open the Phone menu.
note: Not all phones support all
features of the nvi Phone menu.

Using Your Phone BookEach time your phone connects
with the nvi, the phone book isautomatically loaded into the nvi.It can take a few minutes for the phone book to be available. Phone book transfer is not available on all phones.
1. Touch Phone > Phone Book .2. Touch the phone book entry
(contact) you want to call.3. Touch Dial to call the contact.
Dialing a Point of Interest1. Touch Phone > Points of
Interest .2. Search for the point of interest
you want to call.
3. Touch Dial or touch the phonenumber.
Dialing a Number 1. Touch Phone > Dial.2. Enter the number, and touch Dial.
Viewing Your Call HistoryEach time your phone connects
to the nvi, your call history isautomatically transferred to the nvi.It can take a few minutes to transferthis data to the nvi.
1. Touch Phone > Call History.
2. Touch a category to view thosecalls. The calls are listed inchronological order. The most-recent calls are at the top of thelist.
3. Touch an entry, and touch Dial.
Calling HomeEnter a phone number for your homelocation so you can quickly callhome.

To call home:1. Touch Phone > Call Home.2. The nvi dials your home phone
number.
Placing Calls Using VoiceDialYou can place calls by speaking thecontacts name.
1. Touch Phone > Voice Dial.2. Speak the contact name.
note: You might need to trainyour phone to recognize your voicedial commands. Refer to your phoneinstructions.
Phone Status
Check the battery level and signalstrength for your phone by touchingPh > S us.

You can store les, such as JPEGimage les, in the internal memoryon the nvi or on a memory card.
note: The nvi is not compatiblewith Windows 95, 98, Me, or
Windows NT
. It is also notcompatible with Mac OS 10.3 andearlier. This is a common limitationof most USB mass storage devices.

Loading FilesStep 1: Insert a MemoryCard (Optional)To insert or remove the memorycard, press it in until it clicks.
Step 2: Connect the USB
CableConnect the mini-USB connectorto the back of the nvi. Connect thelarger end of the cable to an availableUSB port on your computer.
Your nvi and memory cardappear as removable drives in MyComputer on Windows computersand as mounted volumes on Maccomputers.
note: Some operating systems orcomputers with multiple networkdrives can not display the nvidrives. See your operating systemHelp le to learn how to map thedrives.

Caring for Your nviYour nvi contains sensitiveelectronic components that can be permanently damaged if exposedto excessive shock or vibration. To
minimize the risk of damage to yournvi, avoid dropping your unit andoperating it in high-shock and high-vibration environments.
Cleaning the UnitThe nvi is constructed of high-quality materials and does notrequire user maintenance other thancleaning. Clean the outer casingof the unit (not the touch screen)
using a cloth dampened with a milddetergent solution, and then wipeit dry. Avoid chemical cleaners andsolvents that can damage plasticcomponents.
Cleaning the Touch ScreenClean the touch screen with a soft,
clean, lint-free cloth. Use water,isopropyl alcohol, or eyeglasscleaner, if needed. Apply the liquidto the cloth, and then gently wipe thetouch screen.
Protecting Your nvi Do not store the nvi where

Battery InformationTo maximize the lifetime of the
battery, do not leave your nvi indirect sunlight, and avoid prolongedexposure to excessive heat.
The battery icon in the cornerof the Menu page indicates the status
of the nvi battery. To increase theaccuracy of the battery gauge, fullydischarge the battery and then fullycharge it. Do not unplug the nviuntil it is totally charged.
Charging Your nvi Connect the vehicle power cable
to the mini-USB connector onyour nvi and to a power outletin your vehicle. The vehicle keymay need to be turned to ON/ACC for the nvi to charge.

Connect your nvi to a computerusing a USB cable. The USBcable is included with some nvi205 and 205W packages. Thecomputer must be on for the nvito charge.
Changing the Fuse notiCe: When replacing the fuse,do not lose any of the small piecesand make sure they are put back inthe proper place.

3. Ensure that the silver tip is placedin the black end piece. Screw onthe black end piece.
Removing the nvi andMountTo remove the nvi from the cradle,hold onto the cradle and tilt the nviforward.
To remove the cradle from themount, turn the cradle to the right orleft. Apply pressure in that directionuntil the cradle snaps off the mount.
To remove the suction cup mountfrom the windshield, ip the levertoward you. Pull the tab on thesuction cup toward you.
Mounting on YourDashboardUse the enclosed mounting disk tomount your unit to the dashboard andcomply with certain state regulations.
notiCe: The p m mounting adhesive is extremely
dif cult to remove after it isinstalled.

My nvi never getssatellite signals.
Take your nvi out of parking garages and away from tallbuildings and trees. Remain stationary for several minutes.
The suction cup will notstay on my windshield.
Clean the suction cup and windshield with rubbing alcohol.Dry with a clean, dry cloth. Mount the suction cup asdescribed on page 2 .
My nvi does not chargein my vehicle.
Check the fuse in the vehicle power cable (seepages 4344 ).Ensure the vehicle is turned on and is supplying power tothe power outlet.Your nvi can only charge between 32F and 113F (0Cand 45C). If the nvi is placed in direct sunlight or in a hotenvironment, it cannot charge.
My battery does not staycharged for very long.
To maximize the time between charges, turn downthe backlight. TouchTools > Settings > Display >Brightness .
How do I clear all myuser data?
Hold your nger on the lower-right corner of the nvi screenwhile it is turning on. Keep your nger pressed until themessage appears. Touch Yes to clear all user data.
My battery gauge doesnot seem accurate.
Allow the unit to fully discharge, and fully charge it (withoutinterrupting the charge cycle).
The touch screen isnot responding to mytouches.
Calibrate the touch screen as described on pages 41 42.

How do I know my nvi
is in USB mass storagemode?
When your nvi is in USB mass storage mode, a picture of
a nvi connected to a computer is shown. Also, you shouldsee two new removable disk drives listed inMy Computer .
My computer neversenses that the nvi isconnected.
1. Unplug the USB cable from your computer.2. Turn off the nvi.3. Plug the USB cable into a USB port on your computer
and into your nvi. The nvi automatically turns on andgoes into USB mass storage mode. Ensure your nvi isconnected to a USB port and not a USB hub.
I cannot see any newremovable drives in mylist of drives.
If you have several network drives mapped on yourcomputer, Windows can have trouble assigning drive lettersto your nvi drives. See your operating system Help le tolearn how to map or assign drive letters.
How can I ndrestaurants near thehotel I will be staying atin the future?
1. Touch Where To? > Near > A Different City (andenter your vacation destination).
2. Find the hotel, and touch Go!.3. Touch Menu > Where To? > Near > My Destination .4. Search for a restaurant. Restaurants nearest your hotel
are listed rst.
My phone will notconnect to the nvi.
