Sunday of the Myrrh-Bearing Women Mark 15; 43-16; 8
'The angel stood by the tomb and
cried out to the women bearing
ointment: 'Ointments are for the
dead, but Christ has shown Himself
not subject to corruption. So now cry
out: The Lord has risen, bestowing
great mercy upon the world.'
When the Sabbath had passed, Mary
Magdalene, Mary the Mother of James, and Salome had
brought sweet spices to anoint the body of Jesus. These
Myrrh-bearing women were not afraid of the enemies of
Christ. It was the women who remained with the Virgin
Mary and St. John the Beloved Disciple at the foot of the
cross. It was to them the angel at the tomb informed them
of Christ's Resurrection. They are the first to hear the Good
News of Christ's Resurrection and become evangelists to
the disciples who were in hiding. Because she was the
first to encounter and worship the risen Christ and tell
the Apostles that He is risen, Mary Magdalene is
commemorated in our Church as Equal to the Apostles.
God created Adam, the first man in his image and
likeness and placed him in Paradise. But God saw that it
was not good for man to be alone. God put Adam in a
deep sleep, and while he slept, God took one of his ribs
and fashioned Eve, the first woman. Man and woman
complement each other. The man has gifts the woman does
not have, and the woman has gifts the man does not have.
With their union, they complete the other,

and a human being is brought to perfection. A man and
woman are like 2-halfed people, they are like 2
hemispheres, which, when they are joined, make a whole
sphere.
The monastic, religious life, where men and women
renounce the natural mutual attraction to respond to divine
love and live the angelic life in anticipation of the heavenly
life in which genders will cease and we all live like the
angels in the Kingdom of Heaven. Outside of the religious
life in common, it is impossible for a viable community of
only men to exist, just s it is impossible for a community
made up of only women. The mutual attraction that God
planted in the hearts of men and women is what brings them
together, joins them, and the result of that joining, the new
generation results.
The Lord rewarded the myrrh-bearing women for
their undying love, courage and devotion by appearing to
them first. Christian life is a life of service. Like the
myrrh-bearing women, let us seek the risen Christ, be joyful
and comforted. Then we can serve the Lord according to
our capacity, without fear and complaint. Let us bring our
faith and praises to Christ in imitation of the myrrh-bearing
women brought precious ointment to the tomb so that the
risen Christ who 'is risen from the dead, conquering death
by death,' rewards us with His Resurrection.
'Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to the
tomb seeking the Lord and saw an angel as radiant as
light sitting upon the stone. He said to them: Why do
you seek the Living One among the dead? He is risen
as He said, and you shall find Him in Galilee. To Him
let us bow and sing: O Lord, risen from the dead,
glory to You.'

Come celebrate the 100th anniversary of Fatima at our May Crowning
on Saturday May 13th after the 4pm liturgy.
We are asking all families, especially with children to join in this short
ceremony to honor Blessed Virgin Mary. We need to thank Her for our
blessings we have received, because She intercedes on our behalf.
After the presentation of the crowning of Blessed Mary in the garden,
come stay and have dinner at the Steak Out and have free desert donated
by the OLPH Sodality.
