March 20th, 2016 Palm Sunday

TODAY’S READINGS Gospel at the Procession with Palms — Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem (Luke 19:28-40). First Reading — In spite of my sufferings I am not disgraced. I am not put to shame (Isaiah 50:4-7). Psalm — My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? (Psalm 22). Second Reading — Christ emptied himself, and God filled this emptiness with exaltation (Philippians 2:6-11). Gospel — The account of Christ’s passion according to Luke (Luke 22:14 — 23:56 [23:1-49]). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

PASSION The word “passion” connotes deep, focused engagement. It also relates to passivity, interestingly. The deeply passionate person in the Gospel narrative from Luke is Jesus. He appears passive, but he is not. He is wholly self-possessed and wholly present for the one day that begins on Thursday evening at his last meal with his apostles and ends with his burial before sunset the next day. Then follows the long Sabbath silence. The narrative of the Passion is read whole and without pause on the Palm Sunday of the Passion. This story, found in each of the Gospels, is unchanging. We are the ones who change. Each year, we bring ourselves with another year’s history to hear and heed the story we so badly need. Life has its way with us, and we look again to the Passion narratives to learn to follow.

No me siento avergonzado (Isaías 50:4-7). Salmo — Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado? (Salmo 22 [21]).

First Come, First Served Basic.

From the Desk of the Pastor... Dear brothers and sisters in Christ: “And who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts is the king of glory. Hosanna in the highest; Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord, full of kindness and mercy. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.” This is the beginning of Holy Week and we open with this Palm Sunday, we recognize Jesus as the Prince of Peace, the Good Shepherd, who gives his life for his sheep, is the Sunday of the Lord's Passion , of his great love for us. We will visit these holy days reconciling in Confession, we will participate in a mini retreat one of these nights before the Triduum and if we can be on Holy Thursday in the Morning Prayer preparing for the night where we will participate in the testament of his love: the institution of the Eucharist. Then we will worship Him exposed at the Monument until midnight. And Good Friday is the Day of Silence of God, the Man of Sorrows died on the Cross. At night we will accompany Him in procession through the streets of our neighborhood. Holy Saturday will attend the Morning Prayer, it will be the day of Silence of Mary. And at night with one heart we will be at the Easter Vigil, the Lord victor of death rises. And on Easter Sunday we will be celebrating because in the Risen Christ we all partake of a new life We invite the whole parish community to participate in the different services of the most important week of our faith. Welcome to all who with humble and simple heart let the Lord raise in their lives, in our lives. Blessings, Fr. José Francisco Herrera, Pastor

Lenten Regulations: Abstinence:

from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent (for those 14 and older) is required by Church law. Also, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of

fasting: those between the ages of 18 and 59 should eat less, meaning, take no solid food between meals and only one full meal that

day. Serious health conditions excuse a person from these precepts.
