IGS Open Day and Evening Our Open Day will be held on Thursday 2nd October. As in previous years the school closes for students at 1.15pm that day; buses will be available from that time for students to make their way home as usual.

For your information this will be an opportunity for visitors to see the school in action during the morning between 10.15am and 11.45am. Visitors should report to reception at the front of the school and students will take you on a guided tour.

In the evening the school will be open from 6.00-8.00pm. There will be three short presentations from myself in B Hall at 6.00, 6.30 and 7.00pm. Representatives of Bradford Council will be available on the night to clarify or discuss any questions around admissions for September 2015; although we are an Academy, we continue to enlist Bradford to administer our admissions.

To minimize the congestion around the site, we request that all visitors in the evening come in through the main entrance of school, where you will be directed to the hall or given a programme of departmental displays and a map of the school. Guides will be stationed at key points inside all buildings and around the site to direct and help. We look forward to seeing some familiar faces in the audience as some of you start planning the next stage in your younger children’s school career.

Schoolcomms App Communication has always been a vital element to school life; whether it is letting parents know about disruption to school due to bad weather, informing you about changes to exam rules or the

more everyday news that is included in Headline weekly, we want to be able to communicate with you. As technologies move on and improve, the method that we use to communicate to you also changes. For some time a Schoolcomms app has been available for you to use. Schoolcomms is the system we use to communicate via email or mobile phone to you. We want to make it as convenient as possible for you to receive these regular messages, and the app is great for this. For some time we have been sending email and text messages to keep you informed. We have to pay for text messages and this can add up considerably across a year. The smartphone app – (School Gateway) is completely free, and cuts the costs of text messaging. Great news as the money saved can be better used elsewhere. Please use the following instructions that take you through the download step by step. The essential key to using this app is that we have on record exactly the same email address that you register with. If you need to update us with you latest mobile number or email address please contact us via [email protected] and we can amend our records with your latest information.

PTA Update Can you get involved in the PTA? If so please get in touch with them on [email protected] or follow them (as well as IGS!) on twitter . The PTA are grateful to everyone who helps at and attends the events, they really do appreciate it and it would be lovely to see a few more faces at the meetings! Our AGM will be held on Wednesday 15th October at 7pm in the Lower Library.

Bradford Council ePetition: Secondary School Provision Wharfedale An ePetition from local parents asking for support from Bradford Council to actively seek funding for additional secondary school places in the Wharfe Valley has been set up. The school is supporting this petition and asking parents and carers to sign it and share it with friends and family if they wish to do so. School places will become increasingly under pressure over the coming years and IGS wants to ensure that it continues to be able to educate all the children of Ilkley and surrounding areas into the future.

So you will: receive instant notification of messages

receive messages even when there is no mobile signal – provided you’re connected to Wi -Fi

not be charged for sending replies back to the school be able to store and receive messages all in one place If your mobile phone isn’t able to download the app, we will continue to send messages via text instead.

Home Learning The purpose of home learning is to develop in students a sense of responsibility for organising their own work schedule, to extend their class work, prepare for the next piece of work and to encourage independent learning. Various kinds of home learning may be set consisting, for instance, of writing, reading, learning, researching, practical tasks, longer term project work or consolidating work done in class.

Our Home Learning sheets for the first half term have been uploaded to Realsmart and can be viewed here: Key Stage 3 Key Stage 4 Key Stage 5

Well done to Stuart MacGregor (12JHB) who enjoyed a successful start to the new squash season by taking the Welsh Junior U17 Open title in Cardiff last weekend. This is an international tournament where top players from all over the world compete over 3 days.

Stuart won the tournament beating Welsh number 1 and European number 14, Elliott Morris Devred, in the final, in straight sets.

Well done to Natasha Greenwood (7AMD) who competed in the final show of the season on Sunday at the Ilkley & District Riding Association at Nell Bank along with others from Acrecliffe Riding Centre. In the various classes she entered she achieved 3rd, 4th and 6th places and did extremely well in her first attempt at this type of competition.

Congratulations to our U14 hockey team who travelled The Grammar School at Leeds on Tuesday to play in the first round of the U14 National Schools Hockey Tournament. There were six teams entered; Ilkley being the only state school represented. The girls drew against Silcoates and Rishworth, lost against Wakefield Girl’s High School (WGHS) and The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) and beat Bradford Grammar School (BGS). The team finished a respectable 3rd place behind GSAL and WGHS with the top two teams going forward to the next round. Well done to all the girls involved and a big thank you to Miss Mitchell for umpiring!

Congratulations and good luck to Andrew Lorimer (13DGW), Cam Herbert (13LCM/SAB), Mike Moore (12PC) and Sion Blears (12PC) who all played hockey on Sunday for Ben Rhydding Hockey Club U18s, in the first round of the England Hockey Cup, away at Deeside Ramblers. They won 4-1 with Mike Moore scoring a goal. The next round is at home on October 5th against Southport. Good luck boys!

Congratulations to our Year 7 rugby team who won the 1st Festival Series on Monday at Skipton RFC beating Settle school 12-7, South Craven 7-0 and Wharfedale School 12-7.

Well done to Matthew Revis (8SP) who was selected for the Yorkshire Schools U13s cricket squad earlier this year as an opening batsman. The team won the U13s Festival at Taunton, winning all five matches. Yorkshire reached the Northern final as underdogs against old rivals Lancashire two weeks ago. Lancashire were the only team to have beaten Yorkshire this season, having bowled out Yorkshire twice. Matthew shared a century with his opening partner and was 58 not out when Yorkshire won by 9 wickets. The managers end of season report quotes 'Matthew Revis is only the second Under 12 to score 400 runs in an Under 13 season'. Matthew also recently attended an England Cricket Board taster day in Loughborough.

‘In the summer, we went on a Spanish language course in Salamanca, a beautiful city with lots of history and culture. It was a really enjoyable experience, we had a really great time and also learnt lots of Spanish vocabulary. We stayed with Spanish host families who gave us lots of typical Spanish food; paella, gazpacho, runner beans in tomato sauce and tortilla. We met lots of other students from lots of other countries, America, France and even the Philippines and Kenya, and made lots of friends. Estudio Sampere is a really nice school and the teachers, Sergio and María were very friendly.

We would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more Spanish! ¡Lo pasamos bomba en Salamanca!’
