Look What’s Happening in Our Middle School Science Classes… Sixth Grade students have completed our short unit on minerals and have now moved on to the study of rocks. This unit involves a rock collecting project where students will display their specimens along with identifications of each of the rocks in their collection.
Seventh Grade students are in the final section of our study of human in-heritance and genetics. We have learned how traits and genetic disorders are passed down to our offspring, how to create and read Punnett squares and pedigree charts to trace sex-linked traits, and all about certain genetic disorders. We will wrap up this unit by extracting DNA from a strawberry and looking at the human genome and our fingerprints to see just how unique God has created each of us.
Eighth grade students have looked at the history of bridges and examined the many types of designs to determine which would work best for their project. They now have made teams, come up with a name for their “company” and have been given a budget of $1,550,000 to purchase land and supplies to design and build a toothpick bridge that will be able to sup-port a load of at least 18 pounds. They must write checks, keep a ledger, design a blueprint, cut out their land, and finally construct their bridge while following the rubric and their blueprint. A single toothpick costs $10,000. The results of the bridge build will be posted in the next update.

5TH SUNDAY OF EASTER
THE CLERGY CORNER!Dear Parish Family, What does it mean to be holy? I think there is much confusion with what holiness is and what it takes for us to be holy. Fortunately for us, Pope Francis has just released an apostolic exhortation on the call to holiness in the world called Gaudete et Exsultate (Rejoice and Be Glad). Pope Francis writes simply and directly in the document which was released on April 9. Like his first exhortation (Evangelii Gaudium), you don’t need a theology degree to read this. And it is written with a personal touch, as he speaks directly to each one of us. The title, Rejoice and Be Glad, is fitting because the holiness we are called to is not overwhelming or discouraging, despite our weaknesses. Pope Francis lifts us up and encourages us not to match ourselves up against one another’s holiness. He says, “We should not grow discouraged before examples of holiness>The important thing is that each believer discern his or her own path, that they bring out the very best of themselves, the most personal gifts that God has placed in their hearts (cf.1 Cor 12:7)” (GE, 11). Equally important, Pope Francis stresses that holiness is something that we all can (and should) strive for, no matter who we are. He says, “Are you married? Be holy by loving and caring for your husband or wife, as Christ does for the Church. Do you work for a living? Be holy by labouring with integrity and skill in the service of your brothers and sisters. Are you a parent or grandparent? Be holy by patiently teaching the little ones how to follow Jesus.” (GE, 14). Finally, like me, you might be thinking, That’s nice, but there’s no way I’ll ever get to be really holy. Pope Francis certainly understands. He says, “When you feel the temptation to dwell on your own weakness, raise your eyes to Christ crucified and say: ‘Lord, I am a poor sinner, but you can work the miracle of making me a little bit better’. In the Church, holy yet made up of sinners, you will find everything you need to grow towards holiness” (GE, 15). If you get a chance, read the whole document. You will find it online through w2.vatican.va (Google: Rejoice and Be Glad Exhortation). May we always strive for holiness, despite our weaknesses. God bless you! Deacon Joe ! !! ! !
