The Scarecrow Festival is nearly upon us once
more! As usual it will take place over the
August Bank Holiday weekend - 26th to 28th
August - and the theme is 'Pantomimes and
nursery rhymes'. We need as many
scarecrows as possible in the village to make
it a spectacular sight. You always pull out all
the stops so please help us again this year. If
you haven't already done so let us know you
are entering either by putting a slip through
20, Acresbrook Road or 77 Higham Hall Road
or just give us a call on 777995 or 773302.
The tea rooms will be open as usual and we
would be grateful for any donations of cakes
and hot food. If you could spare some time to
help out that would be much appreciated too.
Again you can let us know on the above
numbers. We have added a Farmers Market on
Bank Holiday Monday and the book sale will be
held in church as usual. The Scarecrow Ball
will take place on Saturday 2nd September.
It's always a good event. Entertainment will be provided by James Cockerill. There will be a
barbecue - bring your own drinks (and glasses). We hope to have it in the village hall this year

What a fantastic success ! The May Fair raised £6800. Particular mention should be made of the revival of
the Maypole Dancing shown on the television news, and thanks to Brian Sutcliffe
and friends for restoring the Maypole and the children for their dancing skills.
Summer 2017 Issue #29
I somehow appear to have become Chairman of the Parish Council I am pleased to say
my immediate predecessor, Mick Tetley, is now much better. We do sincerely thank
him for having taken over and steered the ship over the last few years. Hopefully I
can contribute something.
The last twelve months was a bit of a roller-coaster on the Parish Council as we also
sadly lost Rachael Jefferson and Richard Gadd through personal circumstances but have been delighted to
welcome on board Lucy Willighan and, although we remain two down, we currently have expressions of interest for
both vacancies. If anyone else is interested, please let us know!
Despite those ups and downs, we made some good progress over the twelve months, particularly on the upper field
of the park where we saw the completion of the stone sheds refurbishment, clearance and re-landscaping of the
area behind them and construction of a hard path to the children’s
playground - together, at last, with the final re-instatement of the
part of the field behind Clover Croft . We hope people will agree
that the whole upper field area is now looking a lot nicer and more
usable.
And this year? We have once again entered the Best Kept Village
Competition - thank you to those who turned out on the Clean-Up
Day in May, which did make a difference, and to those who have
done their bit with weedkilling outside their houses.
As always, thanks to Mel for keeping the rockery and village centre
so neat and tidy.
People may have noticed that we have also had all the benches repainted, along with the street name signs around
the middle of the village. The repainting of the bus-shelters is under way.
Another development, on which our Clerk, Patricia Rosthorn, and I have been working hard over the last few
months, is the production of a new “Higham Village” Website. This has been necessary in order to satisfy various
new legal requirements which have been imposed on Parish Councils. Fortunately, as a foundation, we had the
excellent existing website developed since 2007 by Bernard Ingham but a complete re-vamp has been necessary,
incorporating the previous content wherever possible. We have just “gone live” and you may care to visit it at
http://www.highamparishcouncil.com. We shall no doubt have some teething problems but would welcome any
constructive feedback.
And finally, you will see that the format of this issue of The Spout has changed somewhat. We have been
indebted to our Borough Councillor, James Starkie, for designing and producing The Spout over the last seven
years (28 issues!) but regrettably his increasing civic duties mean that he has had to give this up. We do thank
him for all the hard work and skill he put into it. A difficult act to follow, but our new Councillor, Lucy Willighan
and our indefatigable news collector, Margaret Ingham, have taken up the challenge. Thank you and well done!

Hanging Basket Competition Many thanks to everyone, who produced a stunning hanging basket, which
adds to the beauty of our village. Sadly, owing to a hiccup in organisation,
there will be no judging this year, so you can all give yourself a pat on the
back.

School
As the term came to a close our school remained busy with all sorts of activities going on. Our junior
children led a wonderful production of ‘The Mystery of Magpie Manor’, set in the 1920s. The children
were drawn into the world of Strictly Come Dancing through learning a Charleston dance for the
show – a few children were keen to try other styles of dances following this. Perhaps a future dancing
star may emerge from Higham? All of our children took part in a Science week, which involved a lot of
mess, noise and whoops of laughter from the children – with some learning thrown in too, of course!
Prior to this the Year 6s took part in the annual residential to Patterdale Hall in the lake district. The
staff were delighted to see the ‘Patterdale Three’ challenges completed - the gorge jump, the climb
and the abseil. This was the first time all children had completed everything. Years 3-5 visited
Outdoor Elements to build up their confidence with outdoor pursuits. Our Reception children also led
worship in St John’s Church, presenting the story of Noah and the Ark to a packed congregation.
First Aid lessons, a visiting archaeologist speaker, disco and outdoor art work with resident artist,
Mr Parkinson, completed an exceptionally busy term.
All in all, it was a very successful end to another busy year, with the Year 6s leaving us with a moving
Leavers’ Service in St John’s Church based on the theme of ‘celebrating differences’. We wish them
well for the future and look forward to the next generation of children starting in September.
It is with sadness that I will be departing Higham St John’s after ten very happy years to take up the
post of Headteacher at Farington Primary School in Leyland. I would like to thank everyone in the
village for their support of the school during my time here…it really has been a privilege to work in such
a wonderful place! I leave the school in the safe hands of Mr O’Neill and the fantastic team for the
year ahead. A new permanent headteacher will be appointed shortly to start after the Easter break.
