Director’s Note

I am really excited about this year’s fall show, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Ever since I started directing the shows here 4 years ago I wanted to do Shakespeare. I was a little hesitant because as soon as someone utters “Shakespeare” it is promptly followed with the obligatory groan, and “his language is so confusing,” or something along those lines.

In this case, I am thrilled to say that Shakespeare is not confusing. Instead, this play is alive with humor! I am impressed by the way this year’s cast has embraced the Bard. They have worked diligently to interpret and memorize his words. They understand!

The hours the crew has spent doing research to create meaningful costumes, props and scenery to ensure the message of the play is well represented is equally as moving

I am eager for the Bishop Chatard community to see the product of their hard work!

Sincerely,Abby (Haler) Funk ’05

Synopsis and Acts

A Midsummer Night’s Dreamby William Shakespeare

Our story begins on Duke Theseus’ and Queen Hippolyta’s wedding day. Egeus is unhappy that her daughter, Hermia refuses to marry her chosen suitor, Demetrius. Hermia is in love with Lysander, who Egeus dislikes. Theseus declares that if Hermia does not marry Demetrius she must choose death or become a nun. Lysander and Hermia flee to the forest to elope. Hermia's friend, Helena, learns of this and decides to inform Demetrius, whom she loves. Demetrius, though, loves Hermia. Helena hopes they will all meet in the forest. Meanwhile, Quince, Bottom, Flute, Starveling, Snug, and Snout organize a play to be performed at Theseus' wedding. Once in the forest, we learn of the long standing dispute between Oberon (King of the Fairies) and Titania (Queen of the Fairies) over a little changeling boy. Puck, a mischievous fairy and chief assistant to Oberon, begins to meddle in the lives of the four lovers. Chaos ensues.

About the Cast and Crew Heads

Tyler Bien - Senior (Hutson) - Tyler has acted in Fiddler on the Roof, The Diary of Anne Frank, Anything Goes, and The Man Who Came to Dinner, and was on lights crew for Seussical the Musical. His favorite experience has been Fiddler on the Roof because he had fun building the set. He decided to join Theatre because it seemed like a lot of fun, and he enjoys it because of the family feeling. Tyler would like to thank his parents, friends and grandparents for encouraging him to join Theatre.

Erin Boyce - Senior (Hutson) - Erin has been on costumes crew for every production since the spring of her freshman year, serving as co-head or assistant head beginning with her sophomore year. Her favorite production was Seussical the Musical because she’d never been on crew before and found that she loved it. She likes the rush she feels from getting actors on stage “right in the nick of time before the light comes up.” Erin would like to thank her family, cast and crew, and especially costume crew for all the hard work they have put into this production.

Noah Boyce - Sophomore (Christ the King) - Noah was on lights crew for Fiddler on the Roof and The Diary of Anne Frank. His favorite experience so far is getting a headset for Fiddler on the Roof and working a spotlight. He decided to join Theatre last year because his family always told him that he would fit in really well – and they were right! He now considers Bishop Chatard Theatre as his home away from home. Noah would like to thank Erin, Malorie and his whole family for encouraging him to try Theatre.

Emily Buckler - Senior (Midwest Academy) - Emily tried Theatre in the spring of her freshman year because her friends were part of it and they really liked it. She has been involved with crew for each production since then. Additionally, she was in the cast for Fiddler on the Roof as a villager, and in the cast of Anything Goes as a sailor. Her favorite experience so far has been getting to know each cast and crew and developing friendships. Emily would like to thank her friends and family for their big support.

Kelly Burger - Junior (St. Simon) - Kelly has been on the crew for Anything Goes (stage), Fiddler on the Roof (stage), and The Diary of Anne Frank (sound). Kelly would like to thank her family and friends, God, her teams, Ms. Valentine and Mrs. Funk, Addy and Riley, for all being flexible with her schedule, and all of the cast and crew (especially props crew) for pulling off another wonderful show.

Sarah Cavender - Sophomore (Sts. Francis and Clare) – Sarah joined Theatre last year and was on lights crew for both Fiddler on the Roof and The Diary of Anne Frank, and is experiencing a leadership position with this production as lights crew head. She decided to join Theatre because she wanted to get involved, and her favorite part of being in Bishop Chatard Theatre has been circle time before the show. Sarah would like to thank her Mom and Dad.

Robert Dooley - Senior (St. Lawrence) - Robert started in Bishop Chatard Theatre as Banjo in The Man Who Came to Dinner and continued as a sailor in Anything Goes, a Nazi in The Diary of Anne Frank, and as Lazar Wolf in Fiddler on the Roof. Her initial motivation for starting in Theatre was because she “wasn’t very good at sports and had some friends who were doing [Theatre]”. Her experiences will help her towards her goal of someday becoming a director. Emily wants to thank her friends for supporting her and giving her confidence.

About the Cast and Crew HeadsDrew Graber - Senior (St. Simon) - This is Drew's first acting role in Bishop Chatard Theatre; previously he was the Student Director for Fiddler on the Roof. Liz Gore - Senior (St. Matthew) - Liz has been in the cast of The Miracle Worker (Blind Girl), Seussical the Musical (Featured Dancer), Anything Goes (Angel Virtue) and Fiddler on the Roof (Golde). Her favorite experience so far has been The Diary of Anne Frank because it was amazing to take the show all the way to the State Thespian Conference. Lexi would like to thank her family and friends for being the best supporters and cheerleaders a girl could ask for!

Stephanie Hastings - Senior (IHM) – Stephanie has been part of Bishop Chatard Theatre since the fall of her freshman year, both as a performer and as part of makeup crew. She joined because she wanted to branch out, and get out of her comfort zone and do something she was afraid of – and being on stage fit that description! Her favorite part of Bishop Chatard Theatre is the passion people who work on show display. Stephanie would like to thank her parents, especially her mom, for coming to every show and raising money for the Bishop Chatard Theatre Booster Club.

Acting is a way for her to express herself and show who she is, and in addition to Bishop Chatard Theatre she participates in Carmel Community Players Cabaret. Addy has loved all the productions she has been a part of because they have all made her into the actress she is now. Her favorite part has been how Bishop Chatard Theatre is one big family who works really well together. Addy would like to thank her family for always supporting and encouraging her, and Riley McDonald, for being the best co-head a girl could ask for - “I love you!”

About the Cast and Crew HeadsNikki Hoff – Sophomore (Christ the King) - Nikki joined Bishop Chatard Theatre last year as part of the costumes crew for Fiddler on the Roof and The Diary of Anne Frank. Her favorite experience so far has been taking The Diary of Anne Frank to the State Thespian Conference. Hannah Janowicz – Senior (St. Matthew) - Hannah has been involved in Bishop Chatard Theatre since being part of the crew for The Miracle Worker her freshman year. Since then she’s worked on crews and/or been part of the cast for every production. She has also been involved in productions outside Bishop Chatard, including playing a pirate in Peter Pan on the Summer Stock Stage and part of the ensemble for the Civic Theatre’s production of Anything Goes. Her favorite Bishop Chatard experience would have to be defying gravity as Fruma Sarah in Fiddler on the Roof, and being assigned a leadership crew position for the same show. Hannah would like to thank her parents for their patience and support, The Hannah Janowicz Fan Club for coming to all the shows, and Stanley Tucci for inspiring her interpretation of Puck.

Jackson Janowicz – Freshman (St. Matthew) - Jackson is excited to be performing in his first Bishop Chatard production. He joined Theatre at Bishop Chatard because he thought it would be very fun and challenging, and he likes acting because it allows you to express yourself. His favorite part of Bishop Chatard Theatre has been the friends he has on the cast and crew. Jackson would like to thank his family, friends, God, and Team Jackson for supporting him and giving him guidance.

Joanna Kearney – Junior (St. Lawrence) - Joanna was a Choir Girl in The Man Who Came to Dinner and has been part of the set/props crews for Fiddler on the Roof and Anything Goes. Outside of Bishop Chatard Joanna has been part of the cast of several shows through Young Actors Theatre. Being part of the set/props crew for Fiddler on the Roof has been her favorite experience so far because she was close with almost everyone. She likes the family atmosphere and how everyone turns all the work into fun. Joanna would like to thank her parents, Mrs. Funk, Mrs. Valentine, and Young Actors Theatre for guiding her, always pushing her, and supporting her.

About the Cast and Crew Heads

Noel Keith - Senior (St. Monica) - Noel has been on lights crew for Anything Goes and The Diary of Anne Frank and head of the sound crew for Fiddler on the Roof. Noel would like to thank his family, Hannah Janowicz, Stephanie Hastings, Kyle Sorensen, Brendan Smith, and everyone else involved in Theatre.

Kara Koepfer - Junior (St. Francis Xavier-Florida) - Kara’s first year at Bishop Chatard was her sophomore year and she was cast in both Fiddler on the Roof (Chava) and The Diary of Anne Frank (Anne). She has really enjoyed being part of “the great big dysfunctional family” that is Bishop Chatard Theatre, and loves acting because she can share the talent God has blessed her with. Kara would like to thank God, her mom, sister, Alice, and her amazing friends for their love and support, and for always being there. She’d also like to thank her dad - for looking out for her.

Jack Lockrem - Freshman (St. Simon) - Jack is making his Bishop Chatard theatrical debut with this production. About the Cast and Crew HeadsBridget Murray - Senior (St. Simon) - Bridget has been in the cast of Fiddler on the Roof (Yente), The Diary of Anne Frank (Margot Frank), Anything Goes (Erma), The Man Who Came To Dinner (Harriet Stanley), Seussical the Musical (Wickersham Brother) and The Miracle Worker ( Blind Girl). Her favorite role was Margot Frank because of the challenge of constantly staying in character while on stage for the whole show (even during scene transitions), and because working on the show for so long the cast and crew were “beyond close”. Her favorite part of Bishop Chatard Theatre is that every show brings another family. Bridget would like to thank her family, the entire cast and crew, and the curtain - for opening up to her.

Hannah Pletcher - Freshman (St. Simon) - Hannah is performing in her first Bishop Chatard production and loves being on stage with all of her friends. Shelby would like to thank her friends and parents for always supporting her.

Claire Rudolph - Sophomore (St. Pius X) - Claire is participating in her third Bishop Chatard production. She joined Theatre as a freshman because her older sister was involved in the program when she was at Bishop Chatard, and because she loves plays and musicals. Her favorite experience so far has been being able to participate both as cast (Fiddler on the Roof) and crew (The Diary of Anne Frank). She feels that everyone in Bishop Chatard Theatre is so accepting, and that being part of Bishop Chatard Theatre is like being part of a second family. Claire would like to thank her family and friends for being so supportive and awesome!

Valerie Schultz - Sophomore (St. Lawrence) - Valerie is thrilled to be part of Bishop Chatard Theatre again after completing a successful freshman year as part of the cast of Fiddler on the Roof and crew for The Diary of Anne Frank. She decided to join Theatre last year because her older brother was part of it and loved it. Her favorite show so far has been The Diary of Anne Frank because it was a new experience and she discovered how much she loves being a part of Theatre – it provides a time and place where she can be 100% herself with no judgments. Valerie would like to thank her family and friends for encouraging her and everyone on the cast and crew for making Theatre so much fun!

About the Cast and Crew Heads

Henry Semler – Sophomore (IHM) - Henry is participating as part of the sound crew for the second time with this production; his first experience was for Fiddler on the Roof. Henry would like to thank his mom and dad for raising him and teaching him everything he knows.

Amyra Thomas - Sophomore (St. Matthew) - Amyra has been on sound crew for Fiddler on the Roof and The Diary of Anne Frank. She joined Theatre because she enjoys working behind the scenes, and being part of something she enjoys makes her happy. Her favorite part of Bishop Chatard Theatre has been taking The Diary of Anne Frank to the State Thespian Conference. Amyra would like to thank all of the cast and crew because they have been awesome this year.

Olivia Timmons – Senior (St. Matthew) – Olivia has been part of The Miracle Worker, Seussical the Musical, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Anything Goes, and The Diary of Anne Frank. She joined Theatre as a freshman because of the family and closeness of everyone involved. Her favorite part has been being able to watch everyone grow and transform in themselves and their characters for each show. Olivia would like to thank her mom and dad, her family, and all of her “weird, crazy, loud, obnoxious, and totally out-there” friends.

Victoria Toetz - Sophomore (New Augusta North-Pike Township) - Victoria joined Bishop Chatard Theatre as a freshman because her older brother had really enjoyed the program and a lot of her friends were planning on participating. She was surprised by how much she enjoyed her experience backstage as part of the props crew during The Diary of Anne Frank, and she loved taking the show to the State Thespian Conference. She also served on the Advertisement crew for both productions last year. Victoria would like to thank her mom, dad, brother and her wonderful friends for all of their support, love, and encouragement.

Charlie Wessel - Junior (St. Simon) - Charlie has transitioned from being part of the sound crew for his first 3 productions at Bishop Chatard to being part of the cast for Fiddler on the Roof and this production. About the Cast and Crew HeadsLauren Whitlock - Sophomore (St. Matthew) - Lauren joined Bishop Chatard Theatre because she knew the people were great. Her personal experiences have only strengthened that opinion and she has really enjoyed being part of the program. She enjoys acting because it’s really easy to meet and talk to people, and it’s a lot of fun. She was on crew for The Diary of Anne Frank and part of the chorus for Fiddler on the Roof, and found that she would rather be on the stage than behind it. Lauren would like to thank her family and friends for encouraging her to do Theatre.

Elizabeth ZurSchmiede - Senior (St. Luke) - Elizabeth joined the Theatre program in the spring of her sophomore year, and has been part of every production since then. Elizabeth’s involvement in Theatre stems from a desire to step outside of her comfort zone and be a part of something great. Her favorite show so far has been The Diary of Anne Frank because it connected everyone and touched her emotionally. She describes Bishop Chatard Theatre as a close family where she can be herself, and likes being part of the productions because “It is a rush to see the things we can achieve.” Elizabeth would like to thank her friends and family for supporting her with all she does.______________________________________________________________________
