1. Are there more grains of sand on Earth or stars in the universe?

2. What is a leap year? Why do we have leap years?

3. How big is the Earth compared to the Sun?4. How big is our Sun compared to other stars?5. Why is the Equator warmer than the North

and South Poles?

Do Now 2/7/14

1. Put the following in order from largest to smallest: solar system, sun, galaxy, universe, planet

2. Where did the study of astronomy originate?3. If you could travel to any planet which one

would it be? Why?

Scale of the Universe: One more way to think about it. . .

Think about Independence High School, which was built first, Room 209, or the

school? My room is like a planet, and the school is

like the solar system

Earth Motions: Draw This In Your NotesThe Motion What It Is What It Causes Picture / Diagram

Rotation(Ro-tay-shun)

Revolution(Rev-o-lew-shun)

Precession(Pre-cess-shun)

Nutation(New-tay-shun)

Page 26: 2/5/14 Shine Like A Star With Your Warm-Up

• Rotation• Counter-Clockwise Spinning on the axis• Takes about 24 hours, result is Day and Night• Without Rotation, there would be a burning hot

“Day” side and a freezing cold “Night side of the Earth

Page 27: 2/5/14 Shine Like A Star With Your Warm-Up

Why does the Earth spin?

Page 28: 2/5/14 Shine Like A Star With Your Warm-Up

• Revolution• The Earth’s counter-clockwise elliptical (oval

shaped) orbit around the sun• Takes 365 ¼ days, helps give us the seasons• If Revolution stopped one hemisphere would

experience eternal summer, while the other would experience winter

Page 29: 2/5/14 Shine Like A Star With Your Warm-Up

Revolution

Page 30: 2/5/14 Shine Like A Star With Your Warm-Up
Page 31: 2/5/14 Shine Like A Star With Your Warm-Up

• Precession• Earth is tilted 23.5⁰ off center, this means parts of

the Earth are closer to the Sun than other parts• Precession gives us seasons, because of the tilt, one

hemisphere or the other receives more sun light (summer), the other hemisphere gets less light (winter)

• If precession stopped, we wouldn’t have seasons. . .

Page 32: 2/5/14 Shine Like A Star With Your Warm-Up

• Nutation• Nutation is a wobble in the Earth’s precession

caused entirely by the moon’s gravity tugging on the Earth

• If nutation stopped, the “changing” location of stars in the Earth’s night sky would be limited

Music Time. . .1. Split into pairs (choose wisely, this will be graded)2. On your Album/ Paper, create 8 (or more) song titles that show your knowledge of:– Where the Earth is in the universe, and the size of the Earth

compared to the rest of the universe- at least 1 title– The Earth’s motions (Rotation, Revolution, Precession,

Nutation)- at least 4 titles, one about each movement– What happens because of the Earth’s movements (Eclipses,

Seasons, Tides, etc.)- at least 2 title– What might happen if these movements stopped- at least 1 title

Funny is great, showing your knowledge is a must!!!You can use your notes (and the book if you really want)
