Getting ready for the Annual Meeting 2014

Hello HOT Members!!! I hope you are having a great fall and this newsletter finds you well.

Our board is working hard to make sure we have another fabulous time during the 53rd Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ. This includes fundraising to support the HOT Travel Awards, updating by-laws, and planning for the annual reception. We are anticipating for this meeting to have a successful overall increased presence of HOT members in both the scientific and mentoring sessions.

In my opinion, one of the most important roles of HOT is to provide Travel Awards to students and postdoctoral trainees working in the area of Toxicology research. That is a way to provide Hispanic trainees with the opportunity of attending the Annual Meeting, and developing their careers. I would like to encourage the participation of all HOT students and postdoctoral trainee members in this award process. We are looking forward to receiving numerous applications ensuring high-caliber competitive Travel Awards to deserving students and postdoctoral fellows; check for more information on page 3 about how to apply.

I have to mention that it is a reality that many Hispanic trainees depend on the budget to attend the Annual Meeting, for this reason HOT is asking for sponsors for the financial support of this award. Check page 9 for more details about how to become a HOT Travel Award sponsor.

If you want to collaborate with short articles, news or notes related with Toxicology, send it to Verónica Ramírez (Toxenlaces Editor) at [email protected] for inclusion in upcoming issues.

Dear HOT Member,

During the last five years, our organization has achieved tremendous progress and growth. To continue with that trend the HOT Board is preparing an exciting HOT Annual Meeting for 2014. We are thankful for your support and help during this year, but we want to ask you to keep contributing with HOT and, if you are still not involved, we want to tell you that this is an excellent time to do that.

Yes, that is right, this is the time of the year when HOT starts receiving voluntary contributions! This contribution is tax deductible, it will be recognized on our webpage and in Toxenlaces, but most importantly, it will help us tremendously to cover expenses for the annual meeting. The contribution amount is suggested as follows:

HOT Members $50 or more HOT students and postdocs $25 or more

Be as generous as you can with the organization and thank you for your altruism!

Please make your check payable to Society of Toxicology, writing in the memo section Contribution for HOT-SIG. Mail your check to:

Society of Toxicology

1821 Michael Faraday Drive, Suite 300 Reston, VA 20190

Or if you want to pay by credit card, please contact Kevin Merritt at (703)-438-3115 ext. 1601 indicating you want to contribute to HOT-SIG by credit card.

Remember to send your contribution not later than the end of December of this year to claim your tax deduction for 2013.

For any questions you may have, please contact Betina Lew, HOT President, at [email protected] or Linval DePass HOT Vice President, at [email protected]

Best Regards,

The HOT has provided Travel Awards for the past seven years to Hispanic students and postdoctoral trainees working in the area of toxicology research. The HOT Travel Award is offered to outstanding young scientists of Hispanic origin to help with the associated costs of presenting their research at and attending the SOT Annual Meeting. Our organization places particular emphasis on high quality research that includes, but is not limited to, Hispanic population issues pertinent to the USA and Latin America. We look forward to continuing providing a competitive travel award and encouraging the participation of all Hispanic students and postdoctoral trainee members of HOT. The HOT will give preference to first-time applicants with a high quality research background. Previous winners may apply with the understanding that the likelihood of winning a second award may be linked to funding availability after all first-time applicants winners have been selected. The award consists of $750.00 and a beautiful plaque for your lab or office space. To apply for the 2014 HOT Travel Award, candidates must comply with the following requirements:

The winners of the 2014 Global Senior Scholars are Dr. Gonzalo J. Diaz, from the National University of Colombia (Bogotá, Colombia), and Dr. Ebenezer O. Farombi, from the University of Ibadan (Ibadan, Nigeria). The award provides logistical and financial support for the Scholars to attend the SOT Annual Meeting and subsequently spend up to four weeks with one or more hosts from academic, government, or industry organization(s).

Dr. Gonzalo Diaz is widely recognized in mycotoxins globally and plant toxins especially in the Andean region. He is Professor of Veterinary Toxicology, Head of the Toxicology Laboratory and Director of the Avian Nutrition and Toxicology Research Group at the National University of Colombia. This is the largest academic institution in Colombia, having close to 30,000 students and eight campuses across the country. The Toxicology Program at the National University of Colombia is hosted by the Department of Toxicology of the Medicine School with participation of professors from different colleges. He supervises students enrolled in both the Human Toxicology graduate program and the Veterinary College toxicology graduate program and teaches an undergraduate course on Veterinary Toxicology and two graduate courses (Advanced Toxicology and Toxicants of Natural Origin).

Dr. Ebenezer Farombi is Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Toxicology, Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences (College of Medicine), and Director of Molecular Drug Metabolism and Toxicology Research at the University of Ibadan. This is the flagship of postgraduate education and training in Nigeria. The Department of Biochemistry is recognized for its pioneering research on environmental compounds such as aflatoxins, palmotoxins, N-nitroso compounds, perfluidone and aryl alkyl sulfonamide pesticides, glyphosates (a broad spectrum herbicide), naturally occurring coumarin compounds chalepin, imperatorin and oxypeucadanine isolated from medicinal plants, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

The primary goal of the Global Senior Scholar Exchange Program (GSSEP) is to increase toxicology capacity in developing countries by providing opportunities for senior scientists in those countries to develop professional relationships with SOT members in established toxicology programs. Dr. Betzabet Quintanilla Vega, one of the HOT councilors, is member of the Evaluation Committee of this program. The GSSEP is now recruiting applications for hosting Dr. Diaz and Dr. Farombi. The Hosts will in turn visit the Senior Scholar’s institution to engage in teaching, curriculum development, or other activities intended to build training and research capacity in toxicology.

As a minority scientific community we are encouraged to take advantage of this type of programs to show, share and nourish our scientific potential and capacity. Congratulations Dr. Diaz and Dr. Ebenezer for reaching this milestone!

The Special Interest Groups-Collaboration Group (SIG-CG) was established by SOT to assist the SIGs with their different activities and promote events that are of common interest to the SIG. The HOT is represented on the SIG-CG by its President Betina Lew, and Vice-President, Linval DePass. Linval was also recently appointed the group co-Chair. SIG-CG holds teleconferences every other month to discuss issues of common interest to the various SIG.

At the SOT Annual Meeting in 2014, the SIG-CG will sponsor a Global Seminar, which is expected to become a regular event at future SOT meetings. Betina Lew is one of the co-Chairs of this event for the 2014 meeting. She will provide more details about this exciting new event in the next issue of Toxenlaces. In addition, Linval DePass has been asked to lead the planning for this event in 2015. All HOT members who plan to attend the SOT meeting are invited to attend and participate in these events.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. The program offers:

Scholarship support. Paid research training at the NIH during the summer. Paid employment and training at the NIH after graduation.

The NIH UGSP will pay up to $20,000 per academic year in tuition, educational expenses, and reasonable

living expenses to scholarship recipients. Scholarships are awarded for 1 year, and can be renewed up to 4 years. For complete information visit: https://www.training.nih.gov/programs/ugsp.
