Covid or no Covid, time passes too fast.

The CYAA mail sent out on July 1, so long ago it seems, carriedthe story on how the CYAA Port Phillip fleet water socialdistancing event went. So good to be back on the water was theJuly 1 story. This mail, Oct 2, no such good time on the waterstories feature. All we have is plans to return. There is some hopeon the horizon.

Thursday, last week, discussions between the five Port Phillip clubmanagers and Yachting Victoria’s Gavin Wall indicated, all being well, the current Covid-19 restrictions for Melbourne will be further relaxedon October 25. With these restriction relaxations in mind, newsreceived from Mercedes III outlining their plans to time trialthemselves up to racing trim. Details of Mercedes III plans areprovided below. As for what happened CYAA wise, between Julyand October, activity plus is the word.

The way it is today, Oct 5

Today through the efforts of Yachting Victoria’s Gavin Wall, the Vic Dept of Healthdefine what a marina is. Clarification of this definition will allow you can go out undermotor or sail power with family or one non family on your classic provided if you stay within the 5km radius, the two hour exercise limit and social distance. Experience says don’t go. No matter what excuseexceeding the two hour limit to and from your home address and bang to rights.

A Vic Roads boat owner tip. Sort out your boat’s garaging address

Restrictions on access to recreational vessels have been relaxed for those who live outside the 5 km radius. Anyoneoutside this 5km limit who intends to visit their boat best have their boat and club member details with them. Tohelp your boat owner bona fides, make sure the Vic Roads data base lists your boat’s garaged address is it’s onwater location. Besides Covid-19 reasons, this is suggestion has merit for general use and insurance reasons. Takea look at this first hand fact based story on how to go about the change of address. It’s not easy, nothing is, butrecommended. Setting up a Vic Roads account is not too big a leap of faith into Vic Roads care.

Mercedes III intentions for Oct 31 time trials subject toCovid-19 rules at that time.

As noted in the Sept 24th web site posting, here’s the Mercedes IIIintentions to return to racing trim. They intend to begin on the October31 weekend. The dates and times used are those of the postponed2020 Cup Regatta, 10:00 am and 1:30 pm with a lunch break on theRMYS marina. Don’t forget hand sanitisers and wipes.

This means five opportunities to time trial against themselves on similarcourses each day. The proposed venue for these MIII time trials will be waters off the St. Kilda Breakwater. All CYAAskippers are welcome to use these same dates and times for their own time trials.

Results from CYAA racing prior to the Covid-19 indicate all classic crews and boats were running in top race trim. For Classic skippers, when racing restarts, they know both crew and boat will need to be tuned up and preparedfor fast and co-ordination racing action. Time trialing is an ideal way to be somewhat prepare for that run to hitthe start line on time and continually watch that sail trim.

Participation in these time trial by other CYAA members is all voluntary, but it’s the way to go. No doubt that lovelyperson aka “the handicapper” will be on hand to observe.

Now for past week action

First off is the latest CYAA magazine. Issue43. Now printed and posted

Here’s the update to the CYAA Magazine Issue 43posted on CYAA Web site Sept 24th

Our first wave Covid-19 restrictions were to be inforce for six weeks. For our member and exPresident, Mark Chew, enforced idleness was notan option, it was an opportunity. Mark used theCYAA Instagram site to post forty two (6 weeks x 7days=42) boats using a criteria to develop a list ofactive and floating boats that represent Australian’swooden sailing boats. Over those 42 days, theInstagram world following of this list developed intosignificant numbers on a global scale.

For the CYAA, it was considered a project to base an magazine issue on. The magazine front cover image waschosen on the basis, “we may have lost our Cup Regatta but we haven’t lost our Kiwi’s”. What better way tosay this that to use the painting gifted to the CYAA by our CYANZ member and friend, Tony Blake.

A printed copy of this coffee table quality CYAA magazine Issue 42 has been sent to all financial CYAA members.

To look over a digital copy in flip book style, click here. To view the digital book in pdf style click hereThis project required the CYAA to work with the Curator of the Australian Historic Vessels Register, David Payne,The magazine records a special thank you to David. Note: David has retired from his duties at the Australian NationalMaritime Museum. He will continue his work in the the historic vessels field privately.

One other feature of this project was the opportunity to acknowledge the role these Classic Yachts still play todaywith several families that had direct connections with these boats so many years ago.

New CYAA members

So good to have Ian Redwood sign up as a new CYAA boatmember from Sydney and especially to have the Couta BoatTenacity listed on our boat register. Tim Phillips built Tenacityfor Justus Vendrakus. Justus was responsible for bringing thePhillips Electronics company into sponsoring the Sydney,Australia Day Regatta. Tenacity is part of the fleet of Couta Boatssailed out of the Royal Prince Edward Yacht Club. “The Eddies”

If the welcome hasn’t been given before to another Couta BoatOwner then here it is for Colin Arcaro. Colin joined up with theClassic’s last October as a supporter member. He’s is part ownerof the Barwon Heads built Couta Boat Gisella, He was crew on

the Couta Boat Lucy that competed in the 2019 Cup Regatta.

Stradbroke II Trophy and Peter Abrahams

The source of the Cup Regatta Stradbroke II trophy, PeterAbrahams, recently passed. It was through the work of Peterand Col Anderson that made this trophy happen for the CYAA.It now hangs on the RYCV Classic Yacht wall. It’s the Ships Bellfrom the once RYCV flag ship Stradbroke II. This trophy is usedto recognised the best performing Couta boat in our CupRegatta’s. No doubt Peter Abraham’s presence will live on atRYCV through this trophy. Besides yachting, the Abrahamsfamily played a significant role in the Heidelberg School artistcolony At the time of Peter’s passing he was preparing an articlethat explained the connection of this group of artists and inparticular the Cigar Box collection that features at the National Gallery and theStradbroke II Trophy.

1934/1935 Victoria Centenary Regatta Programme

How about this. It was found and passed to the CYAA by NoelSutcliffe. Noel previously crewed on Phil Atkins Trim and isex Black Rock YC Commodore. Material like this is soimportant for sustaining the CYAA relevance in today’s worldof yachting. Remember our Classic Yachts, the highperformance yachts of yesterday, is where the continuingevolution of high performance yachting came from. Theyare the reason why yachting is what it is today.

Besides all that what a treat to see an 1930’s image ofBobby Barr’s Caraid in full flight. We have a Caraid storyready for printing. It was prepared by Bobby Barr to tellCaraid’s story when she was listed on the CYAA boatregister.
