It is good to be connected together by the living word of God as we hear of this marvellous day high up on a hill of ascension.

God bless you as you tune in for this weekend’s worship service. Jesus’ peace be yours and with those whom you are gathered.

It seems strange that Jesus says that his friends would be glad when he left them. It is so opposite to how we think and live. But Jesus has a much grander picture of what is going on in his world and a much deeper understanding of what the future is beyond this particular day.

He departs to stay! He shifts from being located in one place, one time; one city and one community, to be present and active in all places, times, cities and communities – including ours. Jesus is completely unrestricted. He ‘goes viral’ for all time! Unlike the COVID virus, Jesus is not here to kill people but resurrect them by his forgiveness. In the end, these soon to be Apostles of a soon to be new community of Jesus are skipping down that hill ready to continue to be together, share their stories, pray to God, whom they now

know as their heavenly Father. Unbeknown to them, they will take the message of the hope and joy they have to the known world. Is this our time now? Are we being shifted from being one church gathered in one building in one way to being ‘little churches’ gathered in many places in various ways as we participate with the ascended and ruling Jesus in his ongoing mission to share his hope and love in our time? I wonder ... Pastor Adrian

Let’s Re-Connect! It is now OK to gather with others at home. Let’s reconnect! There were some groups just beginning to enjoy meeting at the beginning of the COVID restrictions. Let’s gather the gang again. Maybe the Lord is calling you to make a group at your place, or seek to be part of another group. We can help with that by ‘matching you up’ with people and groups. Here’s what we can now do:

• Have up to 10 people in your group but be able to keep 1.5m distance between people (This is one person per 4m2 in a room).

In an average lounge room, this could be maybe 3-4 people. In a large living area or semi outdoor areas (like a patio), this could be maybe 5-8 people. It would not be wise to meet outdoors (larger area for more people) because flu season is coming, and we want to minimise the chances of catching colds and etc!

• We need to wash hands and wipe down surfaces before and after the group.

We suggest a simple format: • Check in with each other (Highs and Lows for the week etc…)

• Light a candle and Pause before worship. • View the Worship Service (online or DVD) • Use words provided in bulletin • Debrief on the Worship Service • Share a time of fellowship.

Our Worship Service is ready to be viewed by Friday evening. You can gather anytime over the weekend.

Let’s rebuild a network of

house groups worshipping the

Lord together at this time!

Coffee & Friendship Group (Jenny Wood’s Group) are looking at re-connecting on Tuesday 9th June in the Meeting Room or East Room. (Enough room to social distance)

WORSHIP SMALL - Sunday 24th May, 2020 Ascension Pastor Adrian Kitson

WELCOME

GOD WELCOMES US: WE SPEAK AN OPENING WORD

P: God has ascended amid shouts of joy!

C: the Lord amid the sounding of the trumpet!

P: This same Jesus, who has been taken from us into heaven

C: will come back in the same way we saw Him go into heaven.

P: Look! He is coming with the clouds!

C: And every eye will see Him! WE PRAY WE SING Crown him with many crowns LHS 113

Crown him with many crowns, The Lamb upon the throne; Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns All music but its own: Awake, my soul, and sing Of him who died for me, And hail him as your chosen king Through all eternity. Crown him the lord of love; Behold his hands and side, Those wounds yet visible above in beauty glorified: All hail, Redeemer, hail! For you have died for me; Your praise shall never, never fail Throughout eternity.

Crown him the Lord of life Who triumphed o’er the grave, And rose victorious in the strife For those he came to save: His glories now we sing Who died, and rose on high; Who died eternal life to bring, And lives that death may die. Crown Him the Lord of heaven, Enthroned in worlds above; Crown Him the king to whom is given The wondrous name of love: Crown him with many crowns As thrones before Him fall; Crown him, ye kings, with many crowns, For He is king of all.

WE CONFESS OUR SIN: GOD FORGIVES Jesus, we confess our wayward ways and distractions and ask

you as ascended King of all things and people to forgive and restore us to our place at your side.

Peace be with you. Amen. WE PRAY A PRAYER FO THIS DAY

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

WE HEAR GOD’S WORD Ephesians 1:15-23 Christ is the supreme Lord over all things The word of the Lord Thanks be to God. Luke 24:44-53 Jesus commissions and blesses the disciples The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Jesus.

WE CONFESS THE CHRISTIAN FAITH (The Apostles' Creed)

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven,

and sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty,

from thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

WE SING Only a Holy God

Who else commands all the hosts of heaven Who else could make every king bow down Who else can whisper and darkness trembles Only a Holy God What other beauty demands such praises What other splendour outshines the sun What other majesty rules with justice Only a Holy God

Come and behold Him The One and the Only Cry out sing holy Forever a Holy God Come and worship the Holy God

What other glory consumes like fire What other power can raise the dead What other name remains undefeated Only a Holy God Who else could rescue me from my failing Who else would offer His only Son Who else invites me to call Him Father Only a Holy God Only my Holy God

The Study has commenced but you can still join.

Online HoOt Session! On Friday May 8, Hoot playgroup had it's first online session! Using the Zoom platform parents and children were able to see each other and share how they were going. Since all participants were at home, some children excitedly took the opportunity to show others their toys and pets. Others worked on Mothers Day activities which had been sent electronically and shared what they had done. We then listened to Ingrid read a story and we sang some songs chosen by the children. A great time was had by all. We anticipate that we will be doing more Hoot playgroup sessions in this way in the near future. If anyone would like to join us please contact Ingrid or myself and we can include you when we send out the next invitation links. Just email St petri office [email protected] or phone 85621011 Heidi Schultz and Ingrid Gallasch (HoOt Co-ordinators)

Heartland eNews - National Sorry Day and

Reconciliation Week 26 May - 3 June 2020

There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:28)

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

This powerful truth of Scripture, that we are all one in Christ Jesus, is immensely liberating. We are one humanity, joined in Christ Jesus. For now, however, we can only glimpse the fullness of what this truly means. In the meantime, as we wait for God to fully reveal this truth to us, we are to treat each other with care and dignity. The following statement is meant to help us in that, speaking as it does to a godly, respectful relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians: The Lutheran Church of Australia acknowledges that our loving Creator God first gave the land on which we are placed, to the peoples of the First Nations who have walked and cared for this land since before recorded time. We thank God for the land’s Traditional Custodians and pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging as we travel this journey of reconciliation in Australia. These words will soon appear in the LCA’s first Reconciliation Action Plan. To translate the Apostle Paul’s words for today, God is no respecter of persons and doesn’t have favourites. God equally loves all those he creates. He equally sent Jesus to be the Saviour of all peoples. One is not better than another. Just so, God freely gives faith to all and rejoices greatly when his people live in obedience to him and in harmony with each other.

-------

In this together In 2020, with health restrictions on the numbers of people who can gather in public, mass events for National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week cannot go ahead as planned. This won’t, however, stop the work of progressing reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians. The official theme for Reconciliation Week this year is, In this together. It was planned last year, well before the COVID-19 pandemic struck and we started hearing ‘We’re all in this together’ from politicians and seeing it on signs on neighbourhood fences. In the context of COVID-19, ‘We’re all in this together’ is an appeal for solidarity. We are not merely isolated individuals, worried only about ourselves. We belong to a community which cares about and looks out for each other. In the context of Reconciliation Week, In this together is about people with and without Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander ancestry journeying together, listening and learning from one another; building and deepening relationships with one another;

Page 11: 24th May, 2020 · liberating. We are one humanity, joined in Christ Jesus. For now, however, we can only glimpse the fullness of what this truly means. In the meantime, as we wait

acquiring a richer, deeper and more nuanced understanding of Australia’s history and its impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples past and present; working together to repair the damage wrought by that history; and achieving a shared sense of fairness and justice. In this together is also a call to us all to be involved in the work of reconciliation, however best we can. What harms one, harms all of us. When one does good, we are all better for it. All Australians will live in a better place when we work on this together.

Launch of LCA Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and website You may have read in a recent LCA eNews that we will soon launch a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) website. This is now available to you, and I encourage you to visit it and see what you can learn – rap.lca.org.au. A RAP is not, of course, the ‘first step’ on our church’s reconciliation journey. On the website you’ll see revealing insights into past work that has brought us to this stage (watch, for instance, the 1997 video ‘Out of the Shadows’). Building and deepening relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians has been a focus of many Lutherans for a long time, a hundred years or more. We have done some things well, and there are always things we could do much better. Why a RAP? Simply because it’s the best tool we have right now to help us walk that extra mile and move forward in our journey together. A RAP guides and sharpens our thinking and planning. It provides structure, direction, a comprehensive overview of our activities, and a forward-looking focus. A RAP provides us with a means of genuine consultation and ongoing dialogue. And it allows us to take the time we need. If you ask, ‘Are we there yet?’ the answer is, ‘Not yet. Be patient.’ A RAP helps us see how we are travelling, and what the next steps are, on our way to a destination that only God can see. Our LCA RAP must not be about ‘political correctness’ or ‘virtue signalling’. If we allow it to become that through failing to take up the actual challenge of walking together, then it will have failed in its purpose. Your active participation in this journey will help us make sure that we do, indeed get there one day, as God has promised, one people in Christ Jesus.

Prayers God our loving Creator and Father, As we reflect on National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week, we pray for members of the Stolen Generations and their families still experiencing the

harmful consequences of forcible separation; for national, regional and local level reconciliation initiatives, including all efforts to

improve the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; the work of gospel among all Australians, including those who spread the gospel

and serve the people in Central Australia, Cape York, the SA West Coast, and in many of our towns, cities, and rural communities.

for the LCA’s RAP Project Team and all others involved in the work of preparing and implementing the RAP;

for ourselves, that we each might have opportunities to participate in the work of reconciliation and contribute meaningfully to it.

In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Pastor John Henderson, Bishop, Lutheran Church of Australia and New Zealand.

Gif t of Kindness Thursday afternoon a tall young man knocked on our door, he said he was my cousin’s son, so I asked him in. He then explained that he was a truck driver and was put off work three weeks ago. He had just spent a few days with his parents at Bordertown doing some gardening jobs for them. He said that he had an interview on Monday for a driving job. My cousin said to him to go and see Verdun and Marion, that “they might have some jobs for you”. He hated just sitting around. He said that he could give me three or four hours on Friday, which he did and what a beautiful job! I asked how much I owed him and he said “Nothing - that’s a gift from Mum to you.” I was overwhelmed and would have loved to have given him a hug. Sometimes it’s nice to share acts of kindness and I felt I wanted to share this with all of you. Marion.

Pocket Cross — another gift of Kindness A special friend gave me a kind gift the other day. She understood that sometimes when the thinking gets a bit de-railed, how good it is to find an object to focus on to get back on track. Sometimes something to touch is helpful too and this little gift combines both of those beautifully. The gift is a little quilted pocket that fits into your pocket and the special thing about it , apart from looking pretty, is that sandwiched between the two layers it contains a tiny cross . This cross slides around inside and you have to feel for it to find it. Like seeking Jesus but knowing all the time he is there. If you want to know how to make one, contact Sue Wege and she will tell you the whole story. I think the idea came from the internet but the kindness was from her.
