The drawing to the left shows a typical staircase construction. The stair treads should be glued to a piece of Ply-wood and then the String is added to both sides. On the open side fit HR2J on the top edge of the String to form a Capping Rail. This is the Base for the Baluster Rails. The Balusters should be notched at the top end so as to fit the Hand Rail.

Windows Assembled and Kits

We no longer keep kits or assembled windows in stock sizes. In order to accommodate all customers’ requirements we will make kits or assembled windows in fixed or sliding sashes to your specification.

All windows and kits are manufactured with care and accuracy in our own workshop. The bottom rail of the assembled window will be left un-glued to enable you to remove the sashes for ease of painting.

We will need the cut out sizes and a rough sketch of the design you require.

All window sizes are the same price detailed below. Assembled and Kits include glazing for you to fit when you have painted your windows.

1. Draw full size plan of proposed door with all Rails, Muntins and Stiles shown.

2. Using the drawing, measure length of all Rails and Muntins required and then add 4mm which allows for both tenons. Cut the appropriate moulding to the length required.

3. The Stiles can be cut longer than your drawing then trim after the door is completed to give a better finish.

4. Cut the tenons as shown in Fig 1 to 5.

5. Using your drawing, measure the Panels and add 4mm to each of the measurements. This allows for the Panel to fit in the grooves.

6. Assembly of the door is a straight forward procedure but to ensure a good fit, assemble dry first. Start with one Stile first and the Top Rail in position, followed by the Top Panel, Top Muntin and the other Top Panel.

7. Next fit the Divider Rail or Lock Rail (this depends on how many Panels your door has) followed by the Panels and Muntin. Fit the Bottom Rail and finally adding the other Stile. If the door fits together properly it can then be reas-sembled using adhesive. Place the door in the Jig, Fig 6, to hold in position until the adhesive is dry.

8. When the glue is dry, sand the door flat with a fine grade sandpaper on a flat block. Finally, add the moulding round each door panel, mitre into the corners. Your finished door can be either painted or polished.

Recommended mouldings for beading in of Panels, PF11 or PF12.

“How to Mitre Mouldings”

Although a mitred moulding appears to be a simple joint to make, we have been regularly asked by our customers how to do a mitre. We have, therefore, included this worksheet in our catalogue in the hope that it will prove to be helpful to those of you who “have mitred and failed”.

Having cut the first piece of moulding to size it is necessary to repeat this at least once when making a picture frame and more often if you have more than one frame of the same size. Repeating the same length of mitred moulding seems to cause problems. In Fig 3 we show a simple but effective method whereby the moulding of the same length can be repeated as often as necessary.

The procedure is as follows: Cut the first mitre, then cut to the required length as is in Fig 2. Leave the saw blade in position in your mitre board and the piece of moulding (already cut) tight up to the saw blade, position the stop as in Fig 3. Remove the moulding which has been cut to length and repeat the process. i.e. first cut as Fig 1 and then move the moulding up to the ‘stop’ and do the second cut. This should then be the same length as the first piece of moulding. This operation can be repeated as often as necessary to give the number of mitred mouldings required.

One point to note when using your saw is to allow it to cut easily without forcing it. For lengths of mouldings long than your mitre board it becomes necessary to make an extension and this is shown in Fig 4. Briefly the procedure is as follows: First fasten your mitre board to a suitable base board, which should accommodate the moulding lengths re-quired. Then make a mitred ‘stop’ as before and fit as in Fig 4. This ‘stop’ can then be positioned to cut to the required length using the same procedure as before. When positioning the ‘stop’ it should be lined up with the mitre board using a straight edge. You should now have mastered the mitre!

The Fireplaces illustrated here cover Tudor, Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Regency and 30s styles and are available assembled and in kit form. The assembled fireplaces are left plain wood to finish to your taste with the exception of the Edwardian and Red Brick Fireplaces which are assembled complete as shown. You can, if you wish, apply an alter-native paint finish to the Brick Fireplace if you prefer a different colour. The Red Brick fireplaces are not available as kits.

The resin furniture kits are easy to do, although the Chesterfield is rather a challenge for anyone other than a proficient miniaturist! For the beginners amongst you don’t despair! If your kit goes pear-shaped just drop the offending resin kit into warm soapy water and soak off the fabric. Dry off your kit and start again with a new piece of fabric! Try these kits out with sample fabrics first before attempting with your “best fabric” which you are going to use for your project, particularly if you only have a limited amount left!
