physical, emotional and social aspects. In the physical domain safety concerns can range from verbal duels to brawls to ragging and bullying, sometimes resulting in violence. There can be injuries on playgrounds or disasters which may be natural or manmade. The emotional aspect of safety concerns could arise out of harassment, bullying, peer pressure or abuse . There are no clear guidelines for schools on identification of abuse, reporting, referral, investigation, treatment and follow up, and appropriate judicial involvement,”
To address these issues, CII Institute of Quality has organized a two day Workshop on ‘Safer and Smarter Schools’ in Army Public School, Bangalore on the 6th and 7th of April 2015. The workshop focussed on various aspects of School Safety & Security standards in:
?Transportation safety?Building Safety?Lab safety?Electric and Fire Safety?Response to Emergencies and Crises at School ?Counselling of Children?Effective audit and assessment of School

Mr Rajesh Parim, Principal Counsellor & Head, CII-IQ TPM Club India
No priority is as important as ensuring the safety of our nation’s children. And nowhere is this more critical than in our nation’s schools – the erstwhile havens of safety, learning and growth for our children. The recent deaths, injuries, rapes and abuses of children in schools have underscored the need for better school child safety standards, closer monitoring of the safety of children, scrupulous screening of school staff, stronger enforcement of safety standards, active participation of parents in the safety of their children, and increased use of training and technology to improve school child safety.
Increasingly the need for safe schools is becoming self evident. UNICEF reports that 19 out of 100,000 children in India die of safety-related accidents – the highest in the world. The Times of India reports that one in every two children is subjected to child sexual abuse in India while 80% of the cases go unreported. The WHO reports that 41% of deaths of children are because of a lack of road transportation safety – again the highest in the world. And yet we avert our eyes to the travesty that is child safety in schools across India. The recent incidents of rape and physical abuse reported in schools of Bangalore and other Metros has compelled schools to revisit the safety and security practices followed by them.
Safety in schools has various dimensions of safety which include

Two School Excellence Programmes to benefit teachers in the NTPC Campus at Unchahar was organized jointly by Chinmaya School and DAV Public School on 16 & 17 April. This program, facilitated by the Education Excellence team of CII Institute of Quality, was supported and sponsored by NTPC. The team of Mr Sanjay Madan GM (Project), Mr Vinod Chaudhary GM (O & M) , Mr S C Soni AGM(HR) & Dr Udayan Tiwary, Senior Specialist, NTPC Hospital , who besides gracing the Inaugural session, were rather keen on the success and optimum benefit to the teachers as well as students.
Mr Sanjay Madan GM (Project) inspired the teachers with his speech on the importance of training as a continuous need for all professions. Principal Mr A K Tiwari of Chinmaya Vidhyalaya and Principal Mr V K Chandel of DAV Public School coordinated and ensured the smooth conduct of both the programmes. Over 50 Teachers from three schools participated in the activities and attended the training. These teachers shared their views on quality as a component in school education. Theychallenged the customary norms and suggested solutions beneficial to the location specific needs and the peculiar concerns of Unchahar.
National Thermal Power Corporation Limited unit of Unchahar, Uttar Pradesh sponsored both the programs for additional development of Schools functioning in their project area. While one program was for training for the School Teachers of Chinmaya Vidyalaya (English Medium), DAV Public School (English Medium) and Saraswati Vidyalaya (Hindi medium), the second program was for the Students studying in Class IX to XII of Chinmaya Vidyalaya and DAV Public School.
NTPC took a proactive step since the feedback from students and parents to the schools over the past few years had been that students completely lacked exposure to the multiple professions available to them upon finishing school. Unchahar School students only have

the option of selecting Science as a stream till Standard XII and then move to other parts of the country for degree education. These students were only aware of the two traditional courses of Engineering and Medicine due to the predominant culture of the place.
It was hence decided by the management of NTPC, Unchahar and the
Principal of Chinmaya Vidhyalaya to organize a program to fulfil this pressing and important need of the students of IX to XII. While awareness was the key to this pertinent problem for a vocation choice, information and counselling to support it and answer queries of these young minds was also relevant.
The one day Awareness Session on Career Counselling and Future Prospects was then designed and delivered to 515 students of two schools from classes IX to XII. The session was designed to inform students on variety of options post X and XII. It included how to select a career choice by tapping on personal requirements and personality types. What role does interest and passion play in choosing, sustaining
and growing in a career stream? The session also covered areas like Examination & Goal setting along with failure and how to handle the same. Multiple Audio visual clippings, videos of relevance were used to keep the session interesting and hold the attention of the young audience.
