Child Safe Policy

Following on from my presentation during the parentinformation session held on Thursday 16 February, the VictorianGovernment set up an inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuseby Religious and other Non-Government Organisations. TheInquiry's Betrayal of Trust report made a number ofrecommendations aimed at protecting children from all formsof abuse and neglect. One recommendation was that thegovernment implement minimum standards for maintaining'child-safe environments' for all organisations with direct andregular contact with children.

These standards are required to be implemented and enforcedin all Victorian schools. The Ministerial Order provided whatthe Child Safe Standards mean in a school environment, anddemonstrates the Government’s “zero tolerance” for childabuse in Victorian schools.

AIA responded promptly by reviewing its policies to comply withthe ministerial order. Following is a summary of the policy.

Student ManagementWelcome to our new AIA campus! It has been great to see thestudents settle in so well. Student management is an importantpart of our school practice, as we are a restorative practicesschool. We work together as a team with students, parents, teachers, teacher aids, student wellbeing officers andcoordinators to ensure the safety of all students comes first, aswell as the equal opportunity to learn and grow. The behaviourof our students and how it affects their own and others’ learningjourney is important to us. Therefore, we follow a policy thatenables all students to reach their highest individual potential. At AIA we like to keep our standards of student behaviourhigh, ensuring all students are following the Islamic ethos, andadhering to our behaviour policy. When students are workingtogether, and their behaviour is of a high standard, their abilityto learn and grow increases.

Some new and exciting changes that have been put into actionthis year are fortnightly awards at assembly, as well as studentpresentations. Teachers may send home a note letting youknow if your child will be presenting at assembly so parentscan attend. Every fortnight at assembly one student will bechosen from each class to receive an award based on AIAlearner profiles and attitudes they have displayed. This year wewill continue with our class captains. At the end of every term, 2students from Year 1 – 10 will be selected to be class captains. They will work alongside our school captains and be involvedwith the organisation of many extracurricular activities.

Some details about Assembly dates:

Our uniform policy can be found on our website; students arerequired to follow this policy when on school grounds andattending excursions. If your child is out of school uniform forany reason, please provide a note to their classroom teacher.Should a student be out of uniform for 2 days within a 2-weekperiod, an out of uniform slip will be sent home to parents,

which will need to be signed and returned to school. Studentsare required to wear their uniform neatly and tidily as they arerepresenting our school, and this it is something they shouldwear with pride.

We would like to thank the staff and students for all their efforts, and for how well we have settled into our new campus. Keepup the excellent work.

We thank all parents for their ongoing support.

Ms. Tania Lavcanski (Years 2B – 5 StudentManagement Coordinator)Ms. Claudia Zuniga (Years Prep – 2A StudentManagement Coordinator)

A Great Start With PrepsWe are very happy to welcome our new preps and parentsfor the school year of 2017! We have had an exciting first fewweeks of school getting to know each other and making newfriends.

Our Preps have made a wonderful start to school. They havedone a great job of adjusting to our daily routines. We continueto review classroom essential agreements and procedures aspart of our inquiry unit that we are investigating in Term 1, whichis all about school. We have been on a school tour to familiariseourselves with the different places in school such as the library, offices, drinking station, playground, Art and ICT room. Theyhave met other members of the school community like theprincipal, office staff, librarian, cleaners and other teachers inschool. Our current unit helps us understand how we can makepositive choices in school all throughout the year.

Moreover, the preps have been learning to write their name, developing their counting skills and making connections to thebooks that we have read in class. They are working to continueto make progress in their literacy and numeracy skills.

The children are settling very well and are developing beautifulfriendships with the other children in school.

We are looking forward to having many fun-filled learningexperiences this year! We look forward to working with allparents and families to develop strong partnerships and createa positive learning journey for all children.

Year 1Students have had an excellent start to the year. They havesettled in beautifully and jumped into our topics for this term, eager to make the most of their learning. We have learnt aboutwho we are through our inquiry unit: ‘Our interactions insituations may affect how others perceive and respond to us.’

Year One students have expanded their understanding on theimportance of socially acceptable behaviour in learningsituations, and how to get along with others. This includes howto resolve conflicts, help others and apologise when we needto.

Our literacy and numeracy workshops have continued toprovide all children with new strategies to help further theirunderstanding and application of literacy and numeracy basedtasks and activities.

What an excellent start to the year!

Ms Cansu Karakilic and Ms Omnia Sultan – Year 1Classroom Teachers

Welcome to Year 2AWelcome to all the beautiful students in Year 2A. We have hadsuch a wonderful start to our year, and I am so pleased to seehow enthusiastic the students have been in all areas of theirlearning.

In inquiry, we are focusing on making balanced choices, andthe students have been learning about how to apply these notonly at school but also in their daily lives. We have visited ournew science lab where Mr Ahmed helped us work throughsome experiments to see how certain substances affect ouroral health. The students have also been more conscious withthe way they use paper in the classroom, ensuring we aren’twasting it. We do this through recycling! The students havelearnt all about where paper comes from and what will happenif we waste it. Maybe you can ask them to tell you all about it.

In class, we have been running a weekly healthy eating raffle.Every time the students bring in a healthy lunchbox (no chips, chocolates or sweets) they get to use our recycle paper toplace their name in the raffle tub. At the end of the week oneboy and one girl are picked from the raffle, the winners earnmonster points and their choice of a small stationery prize. Ourwinners so far have been Aayan, Sumaya, Bassam and Shazfa.

We are really focusing on using our ‘growth mindset’ in Year2A. The students are encouraged to approach all their taskswith a positive mindset, even when something may be a littledifficult for them. Some things the students have been taught tothink and say are:

“I am going to try my best”, instead of “this is too hard Ican’t do it”.

“It’s ok when I make a mistake. Mistakes help me learnand grow”, instead of “I’m so upset with myself formaking a mistake”.

“I have finished. I am going to check my work to makesure I’m happy with it and that it is my absolute besteffort”, instead of “this is so easy, I’m done”.

One Fridays the students write down on a post-it note howthey used their growth mindset at school and share it with theclass. We also run short yoga sessions throughout the week for5 minutes or so, where the students get to stretch their body(especially if we have been sitting for a long time), and closetheir eyes for some relaxation. During this time, they visualisewhat makes them happy and focus on their breathing. Thestudents have really enjoyed having our short yoga breaks inclass.

I look forward to spending the rest of the year learning andgrowing with this precious bunch, Insha’Allah.

Ms. Tania Lavcanski – Year 2 Classroom Teacher

Year 2B: The Journey BeginsWelcome to all the wonderful students in Year 2B. This yearwill be full of new adventures and a lot of new learning that willoccur. We have started our guided reading sessions and thestudents are enjoying reading and learning about different texttypes and being introduced to new vocabulary.

We have started our first Unit of Inquiry about “Making balancedchoices”. These choices are not only related to school and ourclassrooms but also to our daily lives. We have learnt abouthealthy choices in regards to what we bring to school andwhat we eat at home. Students are more conscious about thechoices that they make in regards to being healthy eaters.

During ‘Circle Time’ we have spoken about being responsiblein the way that we treat and speak to one another and how thisis also part of making balanced choices. The way that we acthas a direct effect on us and others. We have also introduced‘Golden Time’ in our classroom where the students are allowed20 minutes on a Friday to play their favourite game, computertime or to draw if they have completed all their work on timeand gained enough table points. The table with the most pointsalso gets to choose from our Lucky Dip box which is full of greatsurprises.

We have had a great start to 2017 and I can’t wait to continueto this wonderful educational journey with such a great group ofstudents and to be part of all their successes!

Welcome to Year 4Assalamu Alaikum Wr. Wb.

I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome the parents ofstudents in my class to Year 4. Alhamdulilah we are progressingwell within our new surroundings. The students have adaptedto the procedure of lining up and walking to the left side ofthe stairs as we make our way to our room. Neat handwritingand work presentation is a major focus within our class andstudents are working hard to ensure they maintain highstandards.

It has been very pleasing to note that the majority of studentswere prepared and have started the year with all necessarystationery. In Sha Allah may this continue throughout the year.As we are in Term One-the middle of summer, please ensureyour child has the school hat present every school day. It isadvisable for them to leave it at school but please have theirname written or embroidered on items of uniform to limit thembeing lost.

Expectations have been made apparent to students withclassroom Essential Agreements being determined. Please takethe opportunity to ask your child to relate our Agreements andencourage them to follow and abide by our agreements.

Gradually the new campus will continue to improve. Yoursuggestions, patience and support will prove beneficial to theoverall growth and success of our campus.

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

I would like to welcome back current and new students andall parents to our AIA new campus. I would like all to wish youan exciting and successful academic year. With regards to thelibrary, the pressure of time to get it up and running and readyfor library sessions made it all hectic and tiring but the outcomewas indeed pleasing and rewarding.

I planned a modern design for the library layout to create aninviting and interesting learning environment for students andstaff. The layout is designed to suit and cater for all year levelsfrom primary to high school.

The new shelves were installed in the library early this month. At this point in time we are in the process of setting up the

library and placing books on the shelves in accordance withthe standard library classification and conventions. All teachers’resources have been housed and sorted into their designatedsubject areas.
