KYIV CITY GUIDEGeneral Information

Population: 2,820,000 Area: 839 kmAltitude: 124m above sea level Kyiv, Capital of Ukraine, with more

than 1500-year history. Famous for its numerous historical and architectural monuments and unique natural land-scape. For chronicle information, city is named in honor of prince Kyiv (V-VI cent). In 988 Prince Volodymyr the Great introduced Christianity in Ky-ivan Rus. Since then, Kyiv became the spiritual center of Eastern Europe. In the XXI century Kyiv, a city with an old European cultural history, introduce its unique proposal for Europe and Europeans. It becomes a new center of gravity for the most ambitious and creative ideas, investment projects and cultural initiatives, cheerful and open to the world. Many Europeans which visited Kyiv found well known features in its appearance: old quar-ters, picturesque squares, parks and fountains give the city similarity like Brussels, Paris, and Vienna. Kyiv is a place of comfort, which tries to be similar for the usual conservative and prosperous Europe. However, Kyiv in-herent dynamics, energy and ambi-tion to ensure high economic growth and social development. There are lots of amazing places in Kyiv that we couldn't notice in the daily routine. Just stop for a moment, hear the mu-sic of the city. Enjoy its unique land-scape, touch its eternal beauty.

Places to visit Kyiv is a modern city with many ar-

chitectural monuments, more than 100 museums, 33 theatres and 141 li-braries. Near the Valeriy Lobanovskiy Stadium you will find the main streets of Kyiv - Khreshchatyk Street and Maydan Nezalezhnosti, streets are wide and at weekends when it is closed to traffic you can walk there. St Sophia Cathe-

dral's is really beautiful with incredible eleventh-century mosaics and fres-cos. Made internationally famous by Andriy Kurkov's novels, one of the most ancient city streets Andriyivski Uzviz (Andrew's Descent) lies in the shadow of the magnificent St Andrew's Church, designed by the same architect re-sponsible for St Petersburg's Winter Pal-ace. The 'Montmartre of Kyiv', halfway up is the Bulgakov Museum, where Mikhail wrote The White Guard, while an artists' alley towards the top turns into a giant outdoor art gallery at the weekend. Further afield is the incred-ible Kyevo-Pecherska Lavra Monas-tery, set on 28 hectares of hill over the Dnipro. Much of the left bank lies on reclaimed land and a perhaps unfore-seen benefit was the creation of city beaches. There are some on Trukhaniv island and on Hydropark, with incredi-ble views of the UNESCO-listed Lavra. Of a rather different tack - but no less eye-catching - is the Hydropark's free outdoor gym, a post-apocalyptic col-lection of apparatus fashioned from used lorry parts and scrap metal. Mon-uments of Interest Architectural mon-uments - are witnesses and sources of information about the past and the present. Kyiv is famous for wonderful architecture and churches that is why we call it "Zlatoglaviy". The foundation of Orthodox churches and cathedrals took place at the tenth century. The majority of architectural monuments in Kyiv are related to the long history of city development, which was the religious and cultural center of Kievan Rus. Architectural monuments: Gold-en Gates (1037), St. Sophia Cathedral (11th c), Kyievo-Pechers'ka lavra (11th - 18th cc), Vydubyts'kyi monastyr (11th-18th cc.),Tserkva Spasa na Berestovi (12th c), St. Cyril's Monastery (12th c), Mariyinsky Palace (1755), Andriivska church (1767), St. Vladimir's Cathedral (1896), governors house. Monuments

to: st. Volodimir the Baptist of Rus,T. Shevchenko named "kobzar" Askolds grave. The old trade region Podil is sit-uated at the lowest part of the right Dnipro bank, and on its hills - Pechersk district with its fashionable buildings.

At the 60th high stored buildings were founded at the left bank of Dni-pro river. The main Kyiv street is Khre-shatyk with the central square - Inde-pendence square. The modern Kyiv was formed in the XIX-XX centuries. Since this time the city planning was left. In 1890-1917 Kyiv was quickly sub-dued with sophisticated and magic modernism, which created its own, unique, environment. Almost all part of city centre is built in this style.

FOUNDATION OF FC DYNAMO KYIVVarious history researchers indicate May 13,

1927 as the date of foundation of the football club “Dynamo” Kyiv.

FIRST STEPSThe newly created team played its first

official game on July 1, 1928 against a local consolidated city team while visiting Bila Tserkva.

As the club gained more experience and played on a regular basis, it started to fill the stadium with spectators with both the club and football in general gaining popularity in Soviet Ukraine.

During the Soviet era, the club was one of the main rivals, and often the only rival, to football clubs from Moscow. Its ability to challenge the dominance of the Moscow clubs in Soviet football, and frequently defeat them to win the Soviet championship, was a matter of national pride for Ukraine.

In 1936 the first Soviet Championship was played, and Dynamo Kyiv was one of the pioneers of the newly formed league. The club's early successes were however limited to a 2nd-place finish in 1936 and 3rd place in 1937. In the 1941 season, the club

only played 9 matches, as World War II interrupted league play.

1946 – 1961 Naturally, the post-war years proved challenging

in terms of pooling the team together.Crucial turned out to be the 1951 season. The

new coach Oleh Oshenkov combined promising youngsters from the reserves and experienced players and built a strong side.

Dynamo Kyiv tasted their first glorious victory in 1954 by beating in the USSR Cup final Spartak Yerevan 2:1.

The White and Blues conquered the USSR League

crown for the first time in 1961, leaving Torpedo Moscow four points behind and becoming the first non-Moscow-based club to clinch the title.

The golden medals were awarded to O. Makarov, M. Koltsov, V. Shcheholkov, A. Suchkov, V. Anufriyenko, Y. Sabo, Y. Voynov, V. Turyanchyk, V. Serebryannikov, O. Bazylevych, A. Biba, V. Troyanovskyi, V. Lobanovskyi and V. Kanyevskyi.

1962 – 1975 After the victorious 1961

season, the team seemed to enjoy moderate success: 5th placed in 1962 and 7th placed in 1963.

In January 1964, Victor Maslov named by the fans and players “grandfather” was appointed as the new head coach. In his first

CLUB HISTORY

DYNAMO 5

season in charge he guided the White and Blues to the second triumph in the USSR Cup.

More impressive success followed. Dynamo won the USSR Supreme League title three times in a row 1966, 1967 and 1968. The club also took part for the first time in the 1965-1966 UEFA Cup Winners Cup by reaching the quarter-finals where they were beaten by far more experienced Glasgow Celtic 4:1 on aggregate.

In the early seventies, the major upheaval for the squad was the arrival of a new coach Valeriy Lobanovskyi in 1973. Under his care the White and Blues finished top in the USSR championship in 1974 and won the Soviet Cup the same year.

Next season Lobanovskyi, or “iron colonel” as he was nicknamed in the West steered the team to the triumph in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Vladimir Onyschenko (twice) and Oleh Blokhin were among the scorers in overwhelming win over Hungarian Ferencvaros 3:0.

The heavy power of Dynamo machine felt in autumn of 1975 superb Bayern Munich side captained by great Franz Beckenbauer. Dynamo defeated the Champions Cup holders 3:0 on aggregate and rightly placed in the club’s trophy room the UEFA Super Cup. The author of all three goals Oleh Blokhin for his heroics was named by France Football as the Best Player in Europe by receiving the Golden Ball.

1986 – 1991 Dynamo’s runaway successes in the 1975 season

draw attention to Lobanovskyi methodology. Valeriy Lobanovskyi resigned in 1983 to become

a head coach of the USSR National team. The subsequent seasons Dynamo finished empty-handed and only with Lobanovskyi return in 1985, the White and Blues were dominant local force and shone in Europe. Dynamo made League and Cup double (by

beating Shakhtar Donetsk in the final 2:1) and won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup next season demolishing CF Atletico Madrid 3:0.

At the end of the season 1985/1986 Igor Belanov was named as the best European player and was awarded with “Golden Ball”.

In the penultimate season of the USSR football era Dynamo Kyiv on top again by making League and Cup double in 1990.

1992 – 2002Since 1992/03 till 2000/01 seasons Dynamo Kyiv

established themselves as the clear domestic power by clinching nine Ukraine Vyscha Liga titles and adding five Ukraine Cups.

The great success was largely achieved by the

fruitful work of Valeriy Lobanovskyi who returned to Dynamo from the Middle East in 1996 and splendid performances of great White and Blues Academy graduate Andriy Shevchenko.

1998/99 season was one of the best in the modern history of Dynamo Kyiv as the team reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, by beating mighty Real Madrid in the quarter-finals 3:1 on aggregate.

The season earlier Lobanovsky side thrashed European giants FC Barcelona 7:0 on aggregate with starring performances of Serhiy Rebrov and Andriy Shevchenko up front.

May 13, 2002 became a mourning day nationwide. Valeriy Lobanovskyi passed away shortly after the stroke he suffered during the League away match against Metalurh Zaporizhzhia. Dynamo entered a new era…

2003–2008

In European cups the team was far away from game style, which was inherent to “Dynamo” Kyiv late 90’s model.

However, the team has regained the champion's crown in Ukraine - in 2003, 2004 and 2007, and has won 4 of the National Cup in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

At the same time, in 2004, a graduate of the Dynamo, Andriy Shevchenko obtained “Golden Ball” award as the best footballer in Europe!

2008 – THE PRESENT TIMEIn January 2008, first time in the club’s history, the

team has been headed by a foreign specialist – Yuri Semin, known for his work in “Lokomotiv” (Moscow).

In 2009, “Dynamo” reached the semifinals of UEFA Cup after wins over Spanish “Valencia”, Ukrainian “Metallist” and French “Paris Saint-Germain”, losing to the future owner of the trophy – “Shakhtar” Donetsk.

In the 2008/09 championship of Ukraine “Dynamo” secured golden medals long before the end of the championship – the gap between the vice-champion – “Shakhtar” – was as much as 15 points.

In June 2009, Yuri Semin has resigned as head coach and returned to “Lokomotiv” Moscow. Valery Gazzaev was appointed as the head coach of the club. Later he was succeeded by Oleh Blokhin, with Serhiy Rebrov appointed as “Dynamo” Kyiv head coach in 2014. With Serhiy Rebrov the club achieved considerable success in Europe and Ukraine.

Three rounds before the end of the 2015/16 championship, “Dynamo” became the champion of Ukraine second season in a row. The club also made it to the playoffs of the Champions League for the first time since 1999 – the second place in the group, second only to “Chelsea” and surpassing “Porto” and “Maccabi” (Tel Aviv).
