NEP-E01-S2 24 NEP-E01-S2 24 THURSDAY JUNE 16, 2016 24 THURSDAY JUNE 16, 2016 29 BYG O N ES With Andy Smart Arnold-born rock and roller Dave Taylor has died in his adopted home of Angeles City, The Philippines. ANDY SMART looks back at the career of a unique performer REMEMBERING HELLRAISER KING OF BOOGIE WOOGIE [email protected] nottinghampost.com/bygones DON’T MISS MONTHLY BYGONES: OUT NOW D AVE Taylor trained to be a classical pianist in his home in Arnold – but it was the boogie woogie beat that earned him the reputation as one of Bri- tain’s greatest rock and rollers. Dave’s music career began in the late 1960s, playing pub pianos around Nottingham. In 1972, aged just 15, he formed Little Dave and the Rhythm Band and although that was short-lived, he then joined a professional outfit called Earthquake. At 17 he turned his back on a job at Raleigh and became a full-time rock and roller with The Hellraisers, appearing with people like Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, B B King and Shakin’ Stevens, toured throughout Europe and Scandinavia, together with continuous session work. Over the past four decades he released nearly 20 albums, played in front of 100,000 people, and broke through the Iron Curtain before Paul McCartney first appeared there. In 2004 he was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. In an interview with the Post several years ago, Dave recalled: “In 1976, I met Procol Harum back stage at the Kuusrock festival, Oulu, Finland where we (The Hellraisers), played in front of a 60,000 strong audience. “In fact, I remember getting drunk with these guys, whilst not even knowing who they were at the time! “As there was no piano at the venue, Markku the promoter and I went to a local music shop in Oulu, the main town nearby, and Markku sold the owner of the shop on some idea about sponsoring the band in return for allowing us to borrow one of his new pianos, and so we returned to the festival area and set up this brand new piano on stage. “The gig was electrifying. I was to do the first track, Honky Tonk Train Blues. I walked on stage to face an audience of more than 60,000 people. I was completely stunned for a few seconds and then ploughed into the boogie-woogie number. “After a nerve-racking five minutes, the rest of the band followed on stage, much to my relief! “Towards the end of the one-hour show, I was pounding the piano, and the audience was going wild. With the help of one of the Hellraisers, Graham Fenton, I pushed the piano right up to the edge of the stage, while I continued playing it. “The audience, along with Mikko Alatalo (a local famous music producer) and Alvin Stardust, who was to perform the next night, was beckoning us to bring the piano nearer and nearer towards them when, suddenly, we ran out of stage and the brand new piano fell off the edge and dropped about 30 feet into the security area surrounding the stage, smashing into a thousand pieces. “With that, the audience broke through the security barriers to collect pieces of the piano. The security guys were engulfed by thousands of screaming fans and within minutes there was nothing left of the piano except the iron frame. “In all the confusion, I realised on stage that I didn’t have a piano to play anymore, but I was still in the middle of my solo! The band continued the playing and I continued my solo on a piece of wood on the side of the stage. “After the gig was over, there were hundreds of fans, mainly girls, clamouring for my autograph. I never did find out what Markku said to the shop owner about the piano.” Dave stayed in Finland in the late-1970s until a wrangle with the government over a work permit, but he continued to perform to a legion of fans throughout Scandinavia. His reputation spread and in 1985 he was offered a six- month contract in Hong Kong and toured Japan and Macao, playing at British military bases including a memorable concert for the Black Watch Regiment. In 1987 he returned to Europe for a concert in Barcelona, playing to a total audience of 300,000 fans. Dave is said to have been the first Western rock ‘n’ roller to hit the Soviet Union in 1988, headlining a concert for the Youth Communist Party. A few years later, Dave returned to Russia on the collapse of the communist regime to perform for the Reformed ex-Communist Youth Party. In 1992, Dave toured the US for the first time travelling from New Orleans to Memphis and Los Angeles, and even across the border to Vancouver. In October 1998, Dave was engaged to play at the Cannes TV Festival by US cable TV network HBO. He performed with the Italian band The Good Fellas. The show was such a success that Dave and The Good Fellas were booked to appear at the launch of Austin Powers’ The Spy Who Shagged Me film, performing to VIP guests, including a host of Hollywood stars and producers such as Steven Spielberg, Sean Connery, Val Kilmer, Charles Bronson, Mick Jagger, and Sir Richard Branson at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1999. In 2008, Rockin Dave decided, after 38 years of performing around the world, to ‘hang up his piano’ and retire from touring. He relocated to The Philippines where he was planning to relax and concentrate on his composing and recording. But he then opened his own club in Angeles City, which he named Midnight Rock Music Lounge, and which proved a huge success. Famous showman and politician Screamin’ Lord Sutch once said about Dave: “Over the past four decades, I have worked with some of the best in the business: Eric Clapton, Charlie Watts, Jeff Beck. Dave Taylor, in my opinion falls into the same category with these top guys.” He went on to say: “Dave doesn’t just ‘tinkle the ivories’, he hammers the keys to death!” His nephew Ady Simpson said: “Dave has a surviving older brother Phil who lives in British Columbia, and an older sister Sylvia who lives in Inverness. Other than that, he has myself remaining in Nottingham, but a wide circle of friends who will sorely miss him and his many fans who will mourn his passing.” Rockin Dave Taylor, who was 59, was cremated in Angeles City and his ashes were scattered, from a light aircraft, above the crater lake of the volcano Mt Pinabatu.
