Dear friends:

I invite you to be part of Holy Trinity’s week on Iowa Catholic Radio as we participate in their Encounter Jesus—One Week Challenge. This challenge asks you to listen to Iowa Catholic Radio for one week. It’s a blessing that we have access to a local Catholic radio station where we can tune in to hear scripture, prayers, news as well as the issues of our day from the Catholic perspective.

The One Week Challenge begins next Saturday, September 10th and continues through Friday, September 16th. Statistics have shown when people listen to Catholic radio that individuals are more spiritually engaged, they have increased their time in prayer, and also they have increased their celebration of the Sacraments.

Iowa Catholic Radio can be heard on radio station frequencies: 1150 AM | 88.5 FM | 94.5 FM;

Their website is: www.iowacatholicradio.com

In addition, Iowa Catholic Radio now has an APP that can be downloaded onto your smart phone so you can listen anywhere at any time.

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL MONEY COUNTERS Our parish is need of additional Money Counters. The volunteer "Money Counters" meet every Sunday for 45 minutes from 11:30am until 12:15pm. They accurately count the collections from the weekend Masses, as well as prepare and make the deposit. The schedule has a Money Counter Team for each month. Depending on the number of volunteers a Team might be scheduled once or twice a year. If you are interested in assisting with this ministry contact parishioner Dave Long at (515) 274-2007 or email him at [email protected]

The United States Conference of Bishops has called for us to pray for peace in our communities. Please join Bishop Pates on Friday, September 9th as he

celebrates the 12:10pm Mass at St. Ambrose Cathedral, on the feast of St. Peter Claver. This saint who lived from 1580-1654 was a Spaniard who ministered to the slaves arriving by ship in Columbia. He is revered as the patron saint of African Americans.

The Mass celebrated by Bishop Pates will be in thanksgiving for the peace and harmony of racial relations that we have experienced thus far in our community and to pray for the continual hard work that our community must do to continue its’ progress.

Following the Mass, at approximately 1:15pm in the Catholic Pastoral Center, there will be a soup lunch with a forum of speakers addressing our communities’ efforts in the area of racial harmony. The speakers will include Des Moines Police Chief Dana Wingert; President of the Iowa-Nebraska NAACP Betty Andrews; and Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie. You can RSVP to the event by contacting Ken Bresnan at 515-237-5089 or email at [email protected]

As we move into the final weeks of summer, may your days be filled with the grace of…

Peace, strength, and courage.

Question for Children: Jesus says that in order to be one of his followers, we must be close to him. When do you feel closest to Jesus? Question for Youth: Jesus tells his disciples that they must renounce their possessions in order to be His disciple. If you had to, could you leave everything behind to be with God? What would hold you back? How much of a struggle would it be? Question for Adults: Today's Gospel is demanding. How do you as a modern man or woman "denounce your possessions?" What does this mean for you?

S P I R I T U A L I T Y O F T H E R E A D I N G S

My Own Heart What is life here on earth all about, anyway? We know it is not an easy task.

The First Reading spells out the problem:

Deliberations of mortals are timid, and unsure are our plans. The body weighs down the soul, the earth weighs down the mind. … What is within our grasp we find with difficulty.

These words apply to all life. We have difficult choices, we have problems. What are we supposed to do?

G o d g r a n t m e t h e s e r e n i t y to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.*

This is the Serenity Prayer, well-known, possibly trite to some people. But it shows the essence of humility: be who you are, not more, not less. Trust in God for everything you cannot do and for everything you can do. Let go, let God.

So, that is the first answer. Life here on earth, even though timid and weighed down, is about humility.

The second answer is love. Real, toiling, sweating love.

Taking up our cross sends us out with Jesus to help others carry theirs.

Look at the apostle Paul in the Second Reading—the formerly fiery, tempestuous Paul—now an old man and in prison. We are reading a personal letter here, one he wrote to Philemon. It turns out that Philemon’s slave Onesimus ran away and ended up being with Paul, who was in prison. Paul says, touchingly, that he became a father to Onesimus, converted him to Christianity and now sends him back to Philemon not as a slave but “as a man and in the Lord”!

Listen to the language Paul uses. “I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you.” Onesimus is not a piece of chattel. Paul is sending someone so dear to him that he refers to the man as “his own heart.”

This is true personal love. It is what life here on earth is all about.

As the third answer, Jesus says (surprisingly) that he wants you to

1. hate your father, mother, children, brothers, sisters, and your own life,

2. renounce all your possessions,

3. carry your own cross just as he carries his.

Shocking, but not as bad as it might first seem. Let’s look.

1. The word “hate” is probably an oratorical way to say “love them in proportion.” If you allow love of God be first in your life, then your beloved family will come right along with it. If you do not, you will lose them. “Hate” means not having anyone get overboard in their importance to you.

2. “Renounce all your possessions.” If you are tempted to love material things more than anything else, then renounce them. It is God you need to love above all things, and everything else in proportion.

3. We are supposed to carry a cross? Why? Because it is far too easy for us to pretend that the world really is not painful, that no one actually suffers. But they do and we do, in a big way. Taking up our cross sends us out with Jesus to help others carry theirs.

And that is the real and final answer to the problems presented in the First Reading. What is life about here on earth? It is about being humble, about loving others truly, and about loving God above all things.

If you know these things, blessed are you if you do.

Save the date for Saturday, October 1st! Please join us for the Holy Trinity Walk-A-Thon beginning with 4:30 Mass, followed by the walk, dinner, and a fun family carnival loaded with prizes. Last year’s event raised over $21,000 for improvements to the ball field, track and equipment for classroom recess. and outside the school walls Emergency Kits for each class room Grabber Cones Traffic Cones and cart Industrial Flashlights Whistles and lanyards Walkie Talkies

The 2016 Walk-A-Thon will provide the necessary funds for all of these important improvements to go along with the small Prairie Meadows Grant we have received. S A I N T O F T H E W E E K

Catherine of Alexandria, Virgin and Martyr, c. 310

This saint is said to have been born into a patrician family of Alexandria and converted after seeing a vision of Our Lady and the Holy Child.

W h e n t h e E m p e r o r M a x e n t i u s b e g a n persecuting Christians, Catherine, only eighteen, went to him and scolded him for his tyranny. Unable to answer her arguments

against his gods, Maxentius summoned fifty philosophers to oppose her. The fifty were themselves converted by Catherine and the infuriated Maxentius had them burned to death.

Maxentius tried other bribes to force Catherine to give up Christianity, but when these failed, he had her beaten and imprisoned. Upon returning from a trip, Maxentius found that Catherine had converted his wife, one of his officers, and 200 soldiers of the guard. The emperor had them all put to death and sentenced Catherine to die on a spiked wheel. When she was placed on it, her bonds were miraculously loosened and the wheel broke. Catherine was then beheaded.

Since about the tenth century, a great devotion to St. Catherine has existed in the Eastern Church and numerous churches are named in her honor. St. Catherine is said to have been one of the voices from heaven heard by St. Joan of Arc. Because of her legendary erudition, St. Catherine is the patroness of philosophers and teachers. An optional Memorial is celebrated in honor of this saint on November 25th.

Catherine's message today: Just as Catherine stood up to tyranny, we are called upon to do the same, whether it be tyranny of a foreign country or something more localized, like the tyranny of a school board. There are many effective ways for Christians to respond such as offering time, writing a letter, or contributing money.

How well do you succeed at keeping time for quiet prayer and meditation a part of your daily life?
