President’s LetterSince we last came together in this glorious setting, one of the icons of folk music departed this earthly plane. More than anyone else Pete Seeger embodied and displayed the ‘folkie’ persona, and he wore it with absolute pride. Among other things, he is credited with bringing the banjo out of the Appalachians and into the mainstream of Americana. He knew Leadbelly and Woody and he was a founding member of The Weavers. He wrote or co-wrote folk standards like ‘Where Have All the Flowers Gone’, ‘If I had a Hammer’, and ‘Turn, Turn, Turn.’ He re-wrote the lyrics to ‘We Shall Overcome’, the song that rallied the civil rights movement in the 1960s. He was an environmentalist before anyone thought of that word. And if he didn’t invent it, he certainly helped define this thing we call a ‘Folk Festival’. His music, his words, and his actions are well worth recalling, repeating, and passing on to the next generations.

A particularly relevant Pete quote comes to mind: “I feel most spiritual when I’m out in the woods. I feel part of nature. I used to say I was an atheist. Now I say it’s all according to your definition of God. According to my definition of God, I’m not an atheist. Because I think God is everything. Whenever I open my eyes I’m looking at God. Whenever I’m listening to something I’m listening to God.”

On behalf of the Board and membership of Delaware Friends of Folk, welcome to the 23rd annual Delmarva Folk Festival! Thanks to Pete, we are all here today, and we’re glad you came. We hope you enjoy our Festival as much as we enjoy presenting it. Again this year we have tried to live up to our ‘Support Local Music’ slogan so all but two of our acts live within 50 miles of Hartly. The line-up for today represents a broad cross-section of the American folk music scene including blues, bluegrass, Celtic, old-time, traditional and contemporary folk, and a few things that don’t fit anywhere except here. As in years past, we’ve planned the Festival to provide a rich musical tapestry so you can encounter music that you normally won’t find on commercial radio or at other local music venues.

We’ve concentrated on making this festival friendly and congenial; laid-back if you like that term. Here in the shade of these great old trees on Lonnie & Sonja Field’s farm, you can enjoy an uncluttered, peaceful day (and night) of wonderful music. In addition, you’ll find yourself surrounded by friends, some you’ve known for quite a while, and maybe others you’ve just met. Please make yourself comfortable and enjoy the festival. Obviously you are outside, and so are mosquitoes, bees, ticks, spiders, and poison ivy. We’ve done our best to clear the main Festival area, but if you decide to wander off the beaten path, please be alert, careful, and considerate of your environment. Take

only pictures and leave only footprints. And parents, please keep track of your children. We love them all and don’t want any of them to get lost or hurt in any way, and we have lots for them to do in their own corner of the field.

You’re probably here for the music, but there’s more than music at our Festival. We have a number of food and craft vendors out in the field, so take some time to browse about and help support these fine folks. Friends of Folk have a tent facing the stage, so pay us a visit too. While you’re there, be sure to pick up a shirt and get a few CDs. Many of our artists are selling their CDs today and this is one of the best ways to support these folks, some of whom try to make a living at this folk music business. For the youngsters among us we have games, a hay ride, Crabmeat Thompson, and other neat activities.

We need you to join our organization, so there is an application in this program and on our web site. Membership entitles you to discounted prices at Delaware Friends of Folk events we sponsor monthly coffee houses and special concerts. In addition, we hold an end of the year party in December and a pick-in most months. It’s a great organization with friendly, sociable members and we’d love for you to be a part of it. You can turn in your application at the T-shirt tent today or any time on line.

And be sure to browse through the ads in this program. These are all local sponsors who have excellent goods and services to offer and who support this Festival with their advertising dollars. Because of their generosity, we are able to bring you quality music without blasting you with ‘corporate’ icons. We also appreciate the special support of the Delaware Division of the Arts and Mispillion River Brewing.

Finally, a very special thanks to Dan Beck, Storm Longhauser, and Mary Zeller, for their wonderful job organizing the festival. They are the leaders of a group of dedicated volunteers who Zeke Zeller has fittingly dubbed ‘Web-busters’. Without these folks’ work over the past two months, you’d be sitting on greenbriar and stumbling over branches (especially after sundown). You wouldn’t have known where to park, the paint would still be in the can, you couldn’t buy anything from vendors, and you couldn’t hear the music. These fine folks are our volunteers, and this Festival happens because of their work and dedication. If you’d like to help out next year, see anyone with a staff badge and we’ll sign you up. It’s yet another way to enjoy this Festival.

Warm Regards,

John Kidd, Board Chair Delaware Friends of Folk

Saturday 1:00. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Celtic Harvest

Friends of Folk Members get 10% OFF Guitar Strings!

We connect with the past and to demonstrate the living tradition of Celtic (pronounced Kelʼ-tic) music. Celtic music is as much a product of the movement of people away from Ireland and Scotland as it is the music within those two places. Celtic Harvest is the creation of that emigration. Five Americans with family roots in Ireland decided to join forces in 1996 (or 1997, depending on who you ask) to play tunes and songs that either originated in Ireland and Scotland or that were a product of the people who carried that tradition to the New World. Our music includes tunes (melodies without words) composed by fiddlers and whistle players and a blind harpist who played for the gentry of the great houses of 17th Century Ireland. The songs come from all over the map--Ireland, Scotland, England, Canada,

Australia, and, yes, even America--written by pop stars, folk legends, anonymous balladeers and even some from our own band members. This year, although we miss Kelly Crumpley terribly, we welcome a new band member, Bob Frazier, whose guitar & powerful voice add a new depth to our arrangements.

Delaware Friends of Folk Board:

The Honey Badgers are a folk duet based in Newark, Delaware. When Michael Natrin asked Erin Magnin to dust off her rarely played fiddle and join him for a couple songs at a local showcase, the two never imagined they were creating a musical partnership that would continue far into the future. The Honey Badgers have been making music together since the summer of 2011. But they had known each other other since 2007 when Erin attended Caesar Rodney High School and Michael went to Smyrna High. A longtime violin player in mostly the classical vein, Erin had put down her bow in college to focus more on voice. But she was prompted to pick it up again by Michael. The first time they performed together, they were competing for a spot in the annual Delmarva Folk Festival. The duet discovered a chemistry between their voices that demanded to be heard, and thus the duo was born.Since then, The Honey Badgers have played all over Delaware and the surrounding area, from the Delmarva Folk Festival to the World Cafe Live at the Queen in Wilmington. They have also opened for nationally touring act The Lone Bellow, as well as local favorite New Sweden. With Michael playing guitar, mandolin, and the occasional banjo, and Erin on violin, glockenspiel, and harmonium, The Honey Badgers have created a sound that is distinctive, satisfying, and fun. They are known for their intense, unique harmonies, and their sincere lyrics and melodies. Their unique brand of folk/Americana sound has been likened to that of The Civil Wars

and The Swell Season. The Honey Badgers released a debut EP, “Booth Bay”, as well as a collection of recordings entitled “Mad Season.” In November 2013 they released a second EP, “Soul. “

Saturday 3:00. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sand Creek

We are all old long-time friends and have been privileged to play the Delmarva Folk Festival before, some even earlier today. Lonnie Field (of course he and his family are hosting this event for the 23rd time) plays guitar. Jan Crumpley plays flute, whistle, and accordion. John Kidd plays harmonica, jaw harp, and percussion. All are vocalists too. Dave Cotullas plays guitar and Bob Hamel is our bass player.

More than anything this year, we feature songs written by John Prine but there are a few originals by Lonnie.

“thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we passed the audition!”

Saturday 5:00. . . . . Chapel Street Junction

The word “eclectic,” may best de-scribe Chapel Street Junction, a five piece band based in Newark, Dela-ware. Although rooted in Bluegrass, their repertoire includes traditional country and Irish songs, ragtime and classic rock cover tunes. Their influences include Doc Watson, Bill Monroe, The Beatles, Alice Coo-per, and Beethoven., About their unique brand of Americana music, it has been said that Chapel Street Junction “sounds like a mule being attacked by a swarm of locusts.”The membersʼ diverse musical backgrounds and instrumental skills have given them the ability to dive into many different genres. A favor-ite at hot spots such as the Home-grown Café in Newark, Chapel Street Junctionʼs band members include Paul Sedacca on banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and harmonica;

Dave Reagan, vocals and lead gui-tar; Ron Beard on bass guitar, man-dolin and vocals, and Scott Perlot doing vocals and guitar work. The band got together several years ago, when Scott and Paul were in another band that was just too busy. They were playing so many gigs that we had difficulty fitting anything else into their lives, so they decided to start their own band. They met Dave at a jam session in Newark and knew right away that we wanted him in theirr band. They found Ron on the Internet by adver-tising for a bass player.Since then, Chapel Street Junction has honed an amalgam of roots music from all the varied traditions that make up the American musical ethos. They have become one of the major influences of Americana music on the Delmarva Peninsula.

Saturday 6:00. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ellen cherry

When ellen cherry (lower case intentional) was laid off from her accounting job in May 2004, she took six months to pursue a career as a full-time musician. She never looked back.

Now an emmy nominated singer/songwriter ellen cherry is a full-time touring and working performer based in Baltimore, Maryland. Her songs have universal themes -- history, poetry, literature -- and appeal to everyone who likes smart lyrics and a pop sensibility.

Born in Plano, Texas (a suburb of Dallas), ellen sang in a choir for six weeks in sixth grade. That, she says, was about the extent of her vocal training. But it was obviously enough. She is known for her powerful, commanding voice, as well as her skill on both guitar and piano.

While studying history at Hendrix College in Conway, Ark., Cherry began writing poems and taught herself to play guitar. She moved to Baltimore in 2000 and recorded albums, when she had the money, until she went full-time in 2004.

ellenʼs songs are musical short stories filled with ear-catching metaphors, quirky characters, and hummable melodies. Add to that charisma, warmth, and an unerring sense of showmanship that takes the audience on a ride from silly to serious and back again throughout the set.

ellen tours nationally and internationally, charming audiences from house concerts to festivals. In 2012, she released her newest and most intimate work yet, a piano-based album entitled “Please Donʼt Sell the Piano”. That same year, she was a Strathmore Artist-in-Residence and co-founded MOBTOWNmoon, a new collaborative project for Baltimore musicians. In 2010, she wrote, recorded and performed a song for an Emmy nominated TV campaign and also composed the score for a shadow puppet piece entitled “Alonzoʼs Lullaby”, which has been awarded the prestigious UNIMA Citation of Excellence.

Saturday 7:00. . . . . . . . . . . . . . Cold Chocolate

Cold Chocolate is creating an ex-citing and unique new sound in the world of Americana, fusing bluegrass and roots with a dash of funk. With original tunes and technical prowess, this four-piece band from Boston is rocking audiences with guitar, ban-jo, upright bass, drums, and four-part harmony.

A classical violinist from age four, guitarist/songwriter Ethan Robbins fell in love with the guitar when he turned fourteen and, ever since, has attempted to bring raw, rootsy sounds into his own original material.

Born into a musical family, Kirsten Lamb became a multi-instrumentalist from an early age. At thirteen, she shifted her focus to the upright bass. And now, Kirsten’s bass work in Cold Chocolate absolutely mesmerizes au-diences.

Winner of the 2012 Lowell Banjo and Fiddle Contest, James McIver not only holds down the driving fi ve-string, but also pushes the envelope of the

bluegrass banjo, lending Cold Choc-olate a sophisticated, funk-infl ect-ed, and outside-the-box three-fi nger style.

Ariel Bernstein joined Cold Chocolate on drums, completing the ensemble. Although drums are often thought to add heaviness to acoustic music, Ari-el brings a light and tasteful groove to Cold Chocolate’s tunes, fi lling out their sound and heightening the band’s exhilarating power.

Add it all up and you’ve got high en-ergy, excellent harmonies, and, of course, killer picking.

Almost two years in the making, Cold Chocolate will release their new CD on Sunday afternoon, at a live show in Cambridge Massachusetts. This show will be James’ last with the band, as he is going to be graduating with a PhD in Physics from Harvard in September. As he becomes Dr. James McIver, he’ll be starting a new career at the Max Planck Institute in Ham-burg, Germany.

Saturday 8:00. . . . . . . . Crabmeat Thompson

Crabmeat Thompson is a musician, racon-teur, and bon vivant who has played the Delaware Valley since 1980. In addition to playing and writing six albums of original music, Crabmeat has hosted comedy clubs and shared stages with a wide range of tal-ent, including Richie Havens, Kate Wolfe, Tiny Tim, John Sebastian, Roscoe the Won-der Horse and the poet Charles Bukowski. Crabmeat has a wide repertoire of songs, covering environmental and political topics as well as hiis travels or his career as a col-lege teacher. They are all delivered with his trademark sense of humor. His musicianship on guitar, voice, and other instruments is superb, and he always develops a rapport with any audience. In addition to playing solo gigs, Crabmeat often performs with his band, “the Blues Bullheads.”Crabmeatʼs performance venues are var-ied and eclectic, and include kindergarten classes, restaurants, comedy clubs and, yes, folk festivals. During the past decade, he has performed in bars from Key West to Dewey Beach, represented Delaware at the Knoxville Worldʼs Fair, and toured Al-abama, Florida, Kansas, Indiana, Mexico,

Ireland, Canada and Spain. Along with his music, Crabmeat is a teach-er. He has taught literature and writing at Oregon State, San Francisco State, West-ern Illinois and Rowan universities, as well as in the Delaware Correctional Center in Smyrna. He also well known for his chil-drenʼs concerts. You can catch Crabmeat at the Crabmeat Thompson Blues, Rock, and Folk Music Fes-tival on October 25 at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts in Dover, Delaware.

Saturday 9:00. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The Kennedys

In a career that now spans two decades, New York duo Pete and Maura Kennedy have traversed a broad musical landscape, surveying power pop, acoustic songwriting, and organic rock. Their compositions have a quality that is both soothing and urgent, with a unique, uplifting sound that has been classified as “unclassifiable.”Rock singer-songwriter Maura Kennedy is the daughter of a professor of English, and the “musical one” of seven children. Her earliest musical influences included Queen and Kate Bush, and later expanded to include the Kinks, the Hollies, and the Raspberries. She and some

like-minded friends formed a combo and blazed a trail through the Syracuse club scene. After that, she took off for Austin. It was there that she made her bones, and also where she met Nanci Griffith, and toured behind Nanciʼs Grammy-winning Other Voices, Other Rooms. Pete Kennedy is a lead and background vocalist, songwriter and record producer/engineer. He plays electric, acoustic, 12-string guitars, and bass guitars, drums, sitar, banjo, sitar, and ukulele. Prior to the Kennedys, he worked a wide variety of performances in Washington DC; from society balls to dixieland banjo gigs, and explored the great songbooks of Gershwin and Cole

Porter with the Peter Duchin orchestra. He performed at functions attended by five US presidents, including Bill Clintonʼs second inaugural ball. Beyond performing, teaching is important to Pete too, and he conducts music workshops in cities and summer music camps up and down the East Coast. The Kennedys have been working as a duo since 1993. They have toured all over the US and the British Isles, and have released a string of CDs, working in the studio with such talented musicians as Steve Earle, Roger McGuinn, and Nils Lofgrin. They recently released a limited edition CD, “Dance A Little Closer: The Kennedys Sing The Songs Of Nanci Griffith,” available only at live shows and on their web site.
