  • 2015 Final Round There was one perfect paper this year. Two students successfully untangled the pattern in the bonus question. Four students gave beautiful and complete solutions to 7b and one more saw the key idea. On the question about beetles wandering out of the urn, many students successfully used the six cases shown in the solutions, but two students very elegantly considered the complement and successfully navigated the necessary inclusion-exclusion correction. There were many nice ways to count the paths on the spider web.!

There was one perfect paper this year. Two students solved problem 10c correctly and elegantly. Three others gave work towards a longer solution. That problem was very difficult. Four students solved problem 7 about the Caterpillar’s mismatched socks perfectly. About a dozen others nearly did so, but made small errors computing intermediate probabilities. There were many interesting approaches to tackling the questions about the Queen’s croquet. There were also many approaches and many different, but equivalent, formulae for the untried doors. There were many different routes to a correct answer on the cucumber frame problem, also.

  • UNC Math Contest Final Round Results 2013

The Final Round of the contest was held in Greeley at the University of Northern Colorado on Saturday, January 19, 2013. A total of 2382 students participated in the First Round in November and 179 of those went on to participate in the Final Round in January. There were two nearly perfect papers. One student gave a completely perfect solution to Problem 9 and one other student gave a near perfect and very different solution to Problem 9. Eight students gave correct solutions to Problem 11b, nine students correctly solved Problem 10d, and twenty-two students correctly solved Problem 7. Three students mentioned an old classic theorem on Quadrature of the Lune (or the Lune of Hippocrates) and one mentioned an interesting and relevant extension of the Pythagorean Theorem. These were pleasant surprises, but of course the lune problem can be done directly with geometry and no fancy theorems! Thirty-two students gave the x=1 solution in Problem 4. All written work was carefully examined so that partial credit could be awarded. It was a pleasure to see so many creative solutions to the many challenging problems on the contest. As in past years, we post general results but do not distribute individual scores. The primary goal of the contest is to promote engagement in mathematics as a pleasurable challenge, and no numerical scoring system can measure the passion, creativity, and resourcefulness that so many students displayed. Congratulations to all of the participants.
