California Mussel
Mussels hold tight on tidepool rocks on California’s rocky coast. They make their own “cement” and they do not move around. They wait for waves to bring tiny bits of food to them.

Hermit Crab
At the shore, rocks hold ocean water in small pools. These pools are called tidepools. Hermit crabs live here. They crawl along the gravel bottom of their pool looking for food.

Earthworm
Some worms live in the forest soil. The soil is made of tiny bits of rock and decaying plants and animals. Earthworms “eat” the soil and help make it richer.

This butterfly has bright orange wingtips. It flutters past oak trees and stays close to streams. It rests on rocks and sips water from wet sand and mud.

This is a tall pine tree. Its strong deep roots take hold in the gravel-filled soil. Some young pine trees can even grow in the cracks of big rocks.

Coyote
Sometimes coyotes stand on large boulders at the edge of the forest. It gives them a good view. They yip and howl from their rocky perch.

Deer look for food in meadows. In the spring, they eat grass, leaves, and berries. Sometimes they hide in the rocks or seek water in a rocky stream.

Pikas live on rock piles in the rocky hills above the forest. They collect seeds in the fall and save them for winter. The seeds are stored in a safe place in the rock pile.

Steelhead Trout
These fish live in cold mountain streams. Big rocks in the streams create deep pools for adult trout. The gravel bottom of the stream is a good place for trout eggs.
