ORGAN VOLUNTARY: Adagio in A flat - (Sonata I) - F Mendelssohn INTROIT: I sat down under his shadow – E Bairstow

WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP

HYMN: CH3 140 1. The Lord doth reign, and clothed is he With majesty most bright; His works do show him clothed to be, And girt about with might. The world is also stablishèd, That it cannot depart. Thy throne is fixed of old, and thou From everlasting art.

2. The floods, O Lord, have lifted up, They lifted up their voice; The floods have lifted up their waves, And made a mighty noise. But yet the Lord, that is on high, Is more of might by far Than noise of many waters is, Or great sea-billows are.

3. Thy testimonies every one

In faithfulness excel; And holiness for ever, Lord, Thine house becometh well.

To Father, Son and Holy Ghost, The God whom we adore Be glory, as it was, and is, And shall be evermore. Amen

CALL TO PRAYER & LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

FIRST READING: Isaiah 51:1–6

PSALM: 138

SECOND READING: Matthew 16:13–20

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth: and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

HYMN: CH 3 224 1. My song is love unknown, My Saviour’s love to me, Love to the loveless shown, That they might lovely be. O who am I, That for my sake My Lord should take Frail flesh and die?

2. He came from his blest throne Salvation to bestow; But men made strange, and none The longed-for Christ would know. But O, my Friend, My Friend indeed, Who at my need His life did spend.

3. Sometimes they strew his way, And his sweet praises sing; Resounding all the day Hosannas to their King. Then ‘Crucify!’ Is all their breath, And for his death they thirst and cry.

4. Why, what hath my Lord done? What makes this rage and spite? He made the lame to run, He gave the blind their sight, Sweet injuries! Yet they at these Themselves displease, and ’gainst Him rise.

5. They rise and needs will have My dear Lord made away; A murderer they save, The Prince of Life they slay, Yet cheerful he to suffering goes, That He His foes from thence might free.

6. In life, no house, no home, My Lord on earth might have; In death no friendly tomb, But what a stranger gave. What may I say? Heav'n was his home: But mine the tomb Wherein he lay.

7. Here might I stay and sing, No story so divine; Never was love, dear King! Never was grief like thine. This is my Friend, in whose sweet praise I all my days could gladly spend.

ANTHEM: Kindle a light – Richard Lloyd PRAYER OF GRATITUDE AND CONCERN

HYMN: CH3 34

1. Lord of all being, throned afar, Thy glory flames from sun and star; Centre and soul of every sphere, Yet to each loving heart how near!

2. Sun of our life, thy quickening ray Sheds on our path the glow of day; Star of our hope, thy softened light Cheers the long watches of the night.

3. Grant us thy truth to make us free, And kindling hearts that burn for thee,

Till all thy living altars claim One holy light, one heavenly flame.

SERMON: Can you see him clearly? OFFERTORY: The Beatitudes – Nico Muhly DOXOLOGY, DEDICATION OF THE OFFERING & CHORAL AMEN

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

HYMN: CH 3 76

1. Dear Lord and Father of mankind, Forgive our foolish ways; Reclothe us in our rightful mind; In purer lives thy service find, In deeper reverence, praise. In deeper reverence, praise.

2. In simple trust like theirs who heard

Beside the Syrian sea, The gracious calling of the Lord, Let us, like them, without a word Rise up and follow Thee. Rise up and follow Thee.

3. O Sabbath rest by Galilee!

O calm of hills above, Where Jesus knelt to share with Thee The silence of eternity Interpreted by love! Interpreted by love!

4. With that deep hush subduing all Our words and works that drown The tender whisper of thy call, As noiseless let thy blessing fall As fell thy manna down. As fell thy manna down.

5. Drop thy still dews of quietness,

Till all our strivings cease; Take from our souls the strain and stress, And let our ordered lives confess The beauty of Thy peace. The beauty of Thy peace.

6. Breathe through the heats of our desire

Thy coolness and thy balm; Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still, small voice of calm.

O still, small voice of calm.

Dear Friends, May God bless you. Although the number of spaces available will be limited we plan to open the Church for worship on Wednesday 2nd of September 2020. I will lead a short act of worship from 11.15-11.45am. Below I will attempt to answer some questions that may arise. Q. Why is the church service on at Wednesday 11am? A. In planning for social distancing, tracking, sanitising etc. we have collaborated with Historic

Environment Scotland. They have, in consultation, developed an implementation plan to comply with the Government’s requirements. This will also meet the requirements of Glasgow Presbytery. On a Wednesday we will have the support of HES staff, the plan and equipment. I believe this support is necessary and helpful in fulfilling our legal responsibility and keeping everyone safe.

Q. How can I attend? A. To book a space for the Church service Telephone or email the Church office and our

Administrator (Heather); T: 0141 552 8198

e: [email protected]

In order to record how many people attend we will need to confirm your request. For tracking we will need your name, address and contact details.

(We are aware this may seem intrusive and even offensive. The requirement will allow us to track the number of people attending. This will also aid with the Government’s requirements for ‘Tracking & Tracing’. It you know of anyone, for whom the Cathedral is home, and they may not be able to make the arrangements themselves please call the office on their behalf. We do not want these measures to fragment the Cathedral family)

Q. Can I request a space for someone else? A. Yes. It will be necessary to have their information for ‘tracking & tracing’. Q. Can anyone attend the service? A. The service is an opportunity for those who regularly worship in the Cathedral to attend.

We hope members, adherents and those who regularly worship will be present. The Cathedral Administrator will respond to all requests. As the Cathedral Church of Glasgow, the people’s Cathedral, we are mindful of our responsibility to the wider city. Any requests outside those above will be considered individually.

Q. What happens when I arrive at the Church on a Wednesday. A. Make your way to the South Porch door for 11am. We would request a queue of no more

than 6 people. If you are the 7th person, please stay back from the queue until entry begins. Please remember social distancing at all times. You will be required to wear a face covering. Once inside the Cathedral there will be a one-way system in operation. You will be seated in the Nave, in the North West Aisle of the Cathedral. The seating will be loose chairs. These have been sanitised. All the necessary requirements regarding face coverings and hand sanitising will be available. At this time face coverings will be required during a worship service.

Q. Will the Church worship service be the same as our regular Sunday morning service? A. No. But worship will have a familiar format and content. There will be Bible reading (s),

prayer (s), music and a Sermon. The Church organ will accompany the service, and a choir member may sing the hymns and other musical items. Social distancing will be observed at all times.

There will be printed material used for one service only. Q. What happens when the service is over? A. You will be directed to an exit using the one-way system in operation. You will have the

opportunity to sanitise your hands. There will be a bin available to dispose of any face covering as required. We would emphasise the need for ‘social distancing’ when leaving the building. We should be mindful of the risk if groups congregate even outside the building.
