Commitment to learning: Teachers have continued on a learning journey through a series of professional learning sessions
based on our School priority of providing purposeful learning through appropriate curriculum, engaging pedagogy and use of appropriate technology. Last Wednesday teachers attended a
professional learning session at School on Building a Feedback Culture. This is an area that Ms Rudolf and Mrs Rowley were
particularly interested in, after attending the Teaching and Learning Conference in Melbourne earlier this year. Teachers are very keen
to improve their teaching practice by supporting each other in the classroom through targeted observation of practice. Ms Rudolf and
Mrs MacGregor presented at the state Maths Conference recently and following this Ms Rudolf has been selected by Curriculum
Services (DoE) to be funded to attend the national conference in Canberra in July. This is a testament to the leadership and
approach being taken in Maths at Ogilvie.
Digital Literacy School Grant: Ogilvie High School was the only high school in Tasmania to be awarded a federal government Digital Literacy School Grant
and part of this $50,000 grant will be used to fund Mr Hortle and Mrs J Williams to attend the EduTech Conference this week allowing them to then share their
learning with teachers. The grant will also be used to fund our project, #codelikeagirlprojectOHS to increase the exposure of girls to Digital
Technologies through school wide implementation of Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies and a primary school outreach program, through which
Grade 5 & 6 students from our feeder primary schools will have opportunities to work with peer leaders from Grade 7 & 8.
Mr Hortle and Mrs J Williams are also interested in finding out more about ClickView, which will
replace our DVC system. ClickView provides educational videos from renowned content providers and free-to-air TV channels, as well as ClickView Original Series videos designed for
educators. ClickView Interactive Videos enable teachers to create active learning experiences by adding built-in questions, which encourage students to engage more deeply with the video and we
are sure these features will provide for engaging opportunities in classes.
Being a Respectful School and workplace with a safe and supportive environment: A number of initiatives are occurring using funding from the Combatting Bullying Grant that the
School was successful in obtaining. The Gr 8 Big Sisters will be working with all Gr 7 classes on activities to reduce bullying with a theme of We deal with problems when they are small. Next week
in our Staff Meeting we will be focusing on a review of our Positive Behaviour Support strategies with a goal of ensuring that we have consistent approaches to developing relationships and appropriate consequences for inappropriate behaviour.
Staffing: This term we welcome Mrs Rowley to the position of Assistant Principal. Our Business Manager, Cindy McDonald has taken up a position at the Professional Learning Institute and we
welcome Helen Hale as her replacement. We thank Cindy for the work she has done to support the provision of first class facilities at our school. We also congratulate Mrs Street who has been appointed substantively to an AST position at Taroona High School.

Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA)
On 19 to 21 of June, four Ogilvie students attended the
Model United Nations Assembly in Deloraine supported by
Rotary. MUNA is an engaging debate about current world
issues between students from all over Tasmania representing
countries in the United Nations. Fraya Kay-Thompson and
Jemima Methorst-Moore represented Argentina and Sophie
Leszczynski and Meagan van Emmerik represented Kenya.
Argentina won the most improved award, which
commended them for their participation and debate skills
over the weekend.
We strongly recommend that Grade Nines participate in
MUNA next year and take this excellent opportunity.
Participating in MUNA has been a fantastic experience that
we will never forget; with many laughs, life long memories
and new friends made.
Meagan van Emmerik, Sophie Leszczynski , Fraya Kay-
Thompson, Jemima Methorst-Moore.
Alliance of Girls’ Schools
An Alliance of Girls’ Schools Dinner was held at Ogilvie on Wednesday 17 May, which provided an opportunity for
teachers to discuss girls’ education with teachers from the other four alliance schools in Tasmania. Past Ogilvie student, Dr
Jessica Melbourne-Thomas was well received as guest speaker. Ogilvie girls catered for the event and served the guests.
Prefects also assisted as guides and with photography. Thanks so much to Ms Roberts for co-ordinating the catering for the
Dinner – the girls were amazing and many guests commented on the presentation of the girls, the delicious food, great
service and how well-run the event was. Thanks to staff who attended, and other staff who assisted - Ms MacDonald, Ms
Karpiniec, Ms McGrath-Kerr and Ms Sullivan at the dinner and Ms McDermott for administration assistance. Thank you also
to all the girls who made this event such a showcase of the talents of girls at Ogilvie.
House Drama 2017
This year’s House Drama was another great success. A big thank you goes to Ms Wilson for organising and running the
event and to House Leaders and Ms Alexander for their support of the casts and crews.
The House Drama Captains, Sophie Wilson (Steane), Ebony Sirgunas, Ki Chalker, Ella Triffit (Dando), Maggie Debnam
(Williams), Fraya Kay-Thompson, Jorden Stirling (Venn), Remy Bailey and Samantha Ditchfield (Miller) did a fantastic job of
writing the scripts, holding auditions, managing the rehearsals, designing the sets and costumes, directing the shows and for
some, also acting in the productions.
Well done to everyone involved and congratulations to Steane on winning House Drama for 2017.

Hobart Eisteddfod Results and Success
On Tuesday 30 May, Ogilvie High School students competed in a number of ensemble as well solo sections in the
Hobart Eisteddfod. Ogilvie students not only competed very successfully but also represented their school very
well in the way they conducted themselves throughout the day, which was quite long for some of the Ogilvie
girls.
Our ensemble results were:
Grade 7/8 Band received a Merit Certificate in the Brass or Concert Band (Yr 8 & Under) section, which is
second place.
Combined Ogilvie/New Town Symphonic Band received a Merit Certificate in the Brass or Concert Band (Yr
12 & Under), which was second place.
Combined Ogilvie/New Town Stage Band received 1st Place in the Jazz or Stage Band (Yr 12 & Under).
There were also some individual entries and awards from Ogilvie Students. They were:
Megan Cowley – Timpani Solo (18 Yrs and Under), Snare Drum or Drum Kit Solo (18 Yrs & Under) 1st Place.
Mabel Sward – Mallet Percussion Solo (14 Yrs & Under) 1st Place.
Well done and congratulations to all soloists and ensembles for their hard work, success and for the way they
conducted themselves throughout the day. A very big thank you to Mr Simon Reade, Ms Sara Mason, Ms Tracey
Patten and Mr Phil Grinham for their assistance in preparing individuals and the ensembles for the Eisteddfod as
well as attending on the day.
The success of this Eisteddfod adds to the long history of doing well in these events that Ogilvie has maintained
for many years.
The Combined Ogilvie/New Town Band now turns its full focus to preparing for
the upcoming Melbourne tour, which includes them competing in the Victorian
Schools Music Festival. We wish them well for the preparation and participation
in the tour and the Festival.

Eco Schools News
Eco Schools Excursion
On Friday 26 May, members of the EcoSchools team visited the
TasNetworks facility. On arrival we were greeted by Richard
Balding, who showed us around and explained to us how all the
machines, transformers, conductors, cables, and other parts
worked together. These pieces of machinery generate the
electricity that powers our households every day. It was especially
intriguing to hear about the variety of positions suitable for both
males and females at TasNetworks. We were informed by Richard
that approximately a third of employees are female. We were
taken inside a switch-room, and in there we saw an array of
machinery. I was personally interested in all of the safety
procedures that were readily in place in case something
malfunctioned.
Overall, visiting TasNetworks was a great experience for us as
young females who are passionate about the environment, and we
are excited and thankful to have been lucky enough to visit.

Eco Schools Plant Propagation
Last spring the Eco-Schools Group helped plant some
native plant seeds. We raised them in the greenhouse
and potted them up in recycled soymilk containers.
Over summer they have grown into magnificent plants!
We have about 60 plants which are a mix of coastal
wattles, casuarinas, banksias and melaleucas. We were
excited to donate most of the coastal wattles to
wildcaretas.org who planted them in front of the surf
lifesaving club at Clifton Beach. The rest of the plants
will be donated to Glenorchy City Council who are
creating a new green space at the mouth of New Town
Rivulet. Also, some will be planted at school.
If anyone knows of a place that needs revegetating, we would be more than happy to grow more natives!

Tasmania’s wombats need your help!
We are collecting the lids of 4L ice-cream containers to be used for making Burrow Flaps
(as pictured) to treat wombats who have sarcoptic mange. For further
information visit https://taswildlife.org/wombat-mange-management/
Please bring your ice-cream container lids to Mrs Williams in N11.
