I write this with mixed emotions of happiness and sadness.
My friend and co-publisher of 38 plus years, Kyda West, is retiring this spring. I am happy that
she is excited about a new chapter in her life that is well deserved. I am sad that our daily routine
of tackling all things together, good and bad, has come to an end.
Kyda and I both realize that business partnerships are not always successful. In fact, through
the years, we have heard horror stories about business partnerships. We were very lucky to share
the same values, the same basic philosophies about business, and more importantly we shared
the same ideas about relationships.
We raised our families and developed a small fledgling paper simultaneously. We attended
school functions, and then attended to bookkeeping or sales issues. Then, in the blink of an eye,
our children were grown and our business had grown to triple circulation, home delivery, and
feature publications. And we were still working together, side by side, day by day.
Even though she will be stepping down as co-publisher, she will continue to work with us on a
part-time basis. So, lucky for me, she will still be available when I need a sounding board or just
some friendly advice. And,,,the truth be known...thats priceless.

When Girls Gather...
for the Oscarsfor the OscarsLynn Fly Whitmer hosted a spur-of-the moment Oscar/Slumber party with 5 girlfriends. These college friends are nostrangers to girls night out. They make sure they get togetherat least once a year to celebrate over 40 years of friendship.
The girls arrived for the party with evening gowns, awedding dress, and jewelry galore. They spent pre-Oscar time
getting all gussied up. One of the ladies changed gowns 6times before finding the right look! There were make-up andhair sessions and accessorizing, of course.
After the look was achieved, the ladies strolled the RedCarpet (a red tablecloth) from the patio to the family roomwhich was transformed into elegant seating for the audience.Lynn, with microphone (a summer sausage intended as an horsdoeuvre) in hand, greeted and interviewed each arrival. Ofcourse, important questions such as WHO are you wearing?and WHO is your jewelry by? were asked and answered.
Hollywood has nothingover Bowling Green! We know howto celebrate Oscar night...well, at
least some of us do!
There were many jewelry items by Dot Fly (Lynns mom),and most of the make-up and hair were courtesy of Lynn.I even understand that Sharpie tattoos were used to en-hance the look of some.
During the evening, an elegant dinner created by ChefLynn was served using fine china and crystal. The elaborate
menu included chicken with a delicate Mornay sauce (akachicken casserole), fresh steamed asparagus sauteed witholive oil, butter and pine nuts, both complemented by a freshgreen salad.
Of course, there was Oscar partying after the awards (untilat least 10:30pm) when all the guests tumbled into bed for acouple of quick winks before waking to feast on the after-Oscar breakfast.
When she isnt busy hosting elaborate parties,Lynn Whitmer is a Realtor with Crye-Leike.

As a resident aid at Chandler Park Assisted Living, Paula
Evans spends her days taking care of those around her.
But on February 24th, thanks to Panache Salon and Spa,
Paula was pampered from dawn to dusk.
For the second year in a row, Panache held a
contest in which members of the community could
nominate a fabulous lady who they felt deserved to
be primped and pampered for the day.The makeover included a
pedicure, facial, spray tan
application, hair-conditioning
treatment, haircut & color,
waxing and makeup
application.
Paula has always had a
passion for helping people. She
grew up in Brownsville,
Kentucky, where many of her
neighbors had crops. She said
she spent a lot of her free time
working next door stripping
tobacco. When she grew a little older, she
would often help elderly family friends by taking them to the doctor
and running errands with them.
Now, 30 years later, Paula remains steadfast in her philanthropy
through her job at Chandler Park Assisted Living. Geriatrics has
always been my thing. You can really learn a lot from olderpeople, she said.
Tracy Stuart, friend to Paula and Marketing Director
of Chandler Park, originally nominated Paula because
of her dependa-
bility and her
willingness to reach
out to the residents. I think
so much of the service she does for
others. She is very deserving, Tracy said.
The women at Panache agreed withTracy which was their reason for
selecting Paula to spend a day in
luxury.
Im not used to getting pampered
like this. I feel very special, Paula said.

And e e R ud l o f f . . .And e e R ud l o f f . . .AndeeRudloff...
Andee Rudloffs career started because as a child she wasinterested in one thing: coloring.
I liked what color could do. I liked entertaining people with
it, said the Bowling Green native.
Now, as the Education and Outreach Director at Bowling
Greens newest performing arts center, SKyPAC, Andee gets
to work with color every day. Or, more specifically, with art.
Her main goal is to create and circulate dialogue about art
within the community. She wants to engage others and to teach
them that art can be an outlet and that it can be everywhere.
Andee first studied art at the University of Mississippi before
graduating from the University of South Florida with a
Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts. There, she began to study
muraling and learned more about the public art process.
She continued her involvement in public art by working on a
mural project in East Nashville. She has produced many
murals throughout Kentucky and Tennessee, as well as serving
as the curator for the Nashville International Airport. This
airport was one of the first to have integrated art as a
functional component of the space. Rather than usingpaintings and sculptures as an afterthought to decorate the
airport, Andee worked to make the entire airport a gallery,
allowing all facets of it to be a medium for art.
Continuing her passion for public art, Andee hopes that SKyPAC and the space it provides for the community can be another
outlet for public art. As she glances through the open lobby, she points out the possibility of one day making railings or light
fixtures an outlet for local artists to apply their talent.
Andee Rudloff believes that art can be created everywhere. And we are thrilled that she brought h er art back to Bowling Green.

Spring is in the air, and with it comes lots ofweddings! Ever since we were little girls, we dreamedof what our special day would be like. We planned it,acted it out, married Barbie to Ken, and some of us evenkept scrapbooks explaining all the possibilities. If you aremarried, can you remember the excitement? If you area bride-to-be, you are probably wiggling in your seatright now, so anxious you can hardly stand it, and ifyoure single, dont worry girls - your day will come
soon enough.I will be joining in on the fun this year as one of my
friends ties the knot this June. I was recently in a bridalshop and was so overcome with the excitement, thatI decided to get my vows renewed in a couple years justso I could do the whole wedding thing all over again.I want a new dress, to feel the fresh young love again, and to celebrate it all with friends and family over manycocktails and wine!
However, as much as I want another wedding, Ihave been reminded through my friend of the manyquestions and decisions that must be made to get theperfect day. One of those questions is, What wine toserve? This is often the last one to think about. Thatswhere I come in.
For this season of weddings, I have the perfect wineto enchant your guests with. Its called La Romantica
Moscato, and it is a perfect complement to any dessert,as well as the perfect end to any romantic occasion.Moscatos are the trendy wine in the industry right nowmainly because they are sweet and fruity, easy to drink, and full of sparkle. La Romantica is a Moscato from Italyand is a sweet white wine with the flavors of honey-suckle, peaches, and white blossoms. La Romanticaslabel is beautiful and classy and will pair with any colorscheme, not to mention look great placed on tables. LaRomantica Moscato also has a slight sparkling to it and
can be used in place of champagne for guests whoprefer a sweeter wine.So now that I have helped with an important
wedding question, I guess Im going to get busyplanning my second wedding, even though all I reallywant is an excuse to dress up like a princess, have myman worship me one more time, and drink some reallygood wine, La Romantica Moscato, with great friendsand family. So until next time, get your romance on withnone other than La Romantica Moscato and end theevening with none other than...well, whatever you want!
This sweet white wine is
fragrant and lightlysparkling. The beautiful
bouquet waftscharacteristics ofhoneysuckle,
peaches &white
blossoms.
Uncork
LAROMANTICA
& uncork the romance.
La Romantica is a
delicious dessert wine
and perfect for events
where romance is the
key. There is no better
wine for your wedding
reception tables than
La Romantica.
Add the extra touch
of romance to weddings,anniversaries,
bachelorette parties and
wedding showers.

T IPS FOR BEING A GOO D M OT HER-IN-LAW :
Treat your son and your DIL as if they are your best friends. Do not relate tothem on a parent-child level; rather, relate to them as adult to adult. Show respectfor them, avoid criticism, and listen when they speak.
Redefine holidays. dont compete with your DILs family over where theyspend holidays. This competition can result in the couple avoiding both familieson holidays. Christmas can be celebrated December 28 or 20 or whenever you cansee them. If both are working or young children are involved, you may need tovisit them. Consider staying in a budget hotel to ease the tension. dont stay toolong. The sage once said, In-laws are like dead fish; after three days, both stink!
Allow your DIL to grow into being a wife and mother. Your knowledge cameover many years. Allow her to make mistakes without comment.
Ask questions. Ask for specific ways you can be helpful. Call to ask if it isconvenient for you to drop by to see them. Honor any boundaries that they set, especially with their children.
Forgive and forget any real or imagined slights from your DIL. She maybe struggling to live up to her notions of your expectations for her. If she isemployed outside the home, she is anticipating your criticism as she lets somethings go that she would like to do. She imagines your criticism, so she hears itinside her head. The wise MIL will make sure that the criticism is only imagined.
Remember that your DIL may become the daughter that you never had, themother of your grandchildren, or the one who chooses your nursing home!
DIFFICULT M OT HER-IN -LAW ?
Despite the MIL jokes made by SILs, the real tension is between thehusbands mother and new wife. The mother-son relationship is now
triangulated. Suddenly, the mother is not sharing her son; she is
relinquishing him to another woman. The DILs gain is the MILs loss. Whenanother woman takes your man boy from you, its natural to resent her, nothim. The hostility, mostly unconscious, is directed at the DIL and not the
son. The son is often oblivious to the tension between the MIL and DIL, orhe ignores it.In Italy, a study found that the odds that a marriage will last increase with
every hundred yards that couples put between themselves and the in-laws.Italian courts have now ruled that a wife has the right to a legal separation if herhusband is not effective in preventing his mother from invading their home.
In Japan, women living with multigenerational families are two to three timesmore likely to experience coronary heart disease than women living with only
the spouse.

She is beautiful, yet always kind and gentle,a special one who is so hard to find. She smiled and even spoke to me.In that moment, she captured my heart and mind.
Feelings I never knew before overwhelmed me,strong emotions that could make a teardrop start.
Visions of touching her soft skin appeared.A special tenderness entered my soul and heart.
She is unaware of this intense desire I hold, for I try to never let these feelings show.I will always care for this one so lovely and gentle, but I feel that perhaps she will never know.
In my fondest dreams, she knows how I feel.In my fondest dreams, she cares for me, too.
I pray she will come close and tenderly touch me.Now, I must confess, She is really you.
I know I should have never revealed my emotions,as my feelings overflow with tenderness and desire, but I fear it may be impossible to hide the smokewhen my soul and heart are so much on fire.

Dear Sheila:
A good friend wants me to be in her wedding, but the bridesmaiddresses are nearly $500! I cant afford this - what should I tell her?
-- Always the Bridesmaid
Dear Always:
Have a talk with the bride and explain your situation. She may opt for a less
expensive dress. If not, ask if you can serve punch or cake. You can meet more
guys that way too!
Dear Sheila:
My college roomie is getting married in another state. Im not in thewedding and Im really hurt! Should I attend or not? -- Dorm Buddy
Dear Buddy:
She may be using family, high school friends or even just one bridesmaid!
I think you should go and be happy! No bridesmaid dress and a road trip!
Dear Sheila:
Im the mother of the groom. I think I should get to pick my dressfirst, before the brides mother. What do you think? -- Mother of the Son
Dear Mother:
Really? Are you picking out your high school prom dress? Why dont you two
grown women go to lunch and shop together for your dresses? Dont start
your kids marriage off on a bad note!
Dear Sheila:
Im a bridesmaid for a good friends wedding. She has picked outour dresses and has even paid for them! The problem is they are pale yellow
and Im blonde and very fair skinned. Should I ask for a different color?-- Pretty and Pale
Dear Pretty,
Oh good Lord! The bride has paid for the dress herself and planned her
decorations around yellow. I have two words for you - tanning bed!

Lauren Edwards runs. She runs because she can. And because there are so manywho cannot. She runs in new cities. She runs on the pavement outside her WestVirginia home. And she runs, leading hundreds, across the Afghan desert.
Edwards is a champion Marine long-distance runner and has served in the MarineCorps for 13 years. During her tour in Afghanistan, Edwards organized and executedthe first Marine Corps Marathon ever to be brought to the country. The marathon isheld every year in Arlington, Virginia and Washington D.C. But to Edwards, Afghanistanseemed like just as good a place as any.
She wanted to give everyone something else on which to focus, something toescape the stresses of a typical work day. Over 250 people raced that day. Runningalongside Edwards were members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard,National Guard, Marine Corps, British Army, Danish Army, civilian contractors, andeven one Afghan soldier. Afterwards, the participants broke bread together.
It was absolutely overwhelming and thrilling, she said. Bringing the Marine Corps Marathon toAfghanistan brought that Marine Corps kinshipsmack dab to a whole load of follks.
To Edwards, the people around her are why shewakes up each morning and keeps dedicating her
life to being a Marine.
If you do it right, you can positively affect so manylives. You have a hand in changing the face of a nation;you have the ability to inspire and lead those aroundyou, she said.
During December of her sophomore year of college, her good friend and running partner was killed in a
Marine Corps training accident. She said his death, and all thatsurrounded it, catapulted her totake the leap and become aMarine. Her desire was to take careof her friends like him and ensure
they had the best leadershippossible.
Mothers and fathers trust youwith their children, she said. Theycount on you to take care of them.
Edwards has devoted her life to ensuring the safety ofcomrades and strangers, often at the expense of time spentwith her family.
The Marine Corps can easily consume my time and put anysemblance of a personal life on the back burner. That said, I have to thank my familyfor always understanding the missed birthdays, holidays, or family events, Edwards said.
Laurens family are longtime residents ofSmiths Grove.
Edwards has fought for her achievements. She found what she wanted and ran to it.Literally. Her position, her passion, and herpeople are ideals for which she is willing tolay down her life.
Life is very short. So find what is importantto you. Grab on to it. And do it, she said.

By Dr. Leslie Campbell
FACTandFICTION
MYTH #1: Botox is dangerous, poisonous, or will give you botulism.
FACT:Botox has been around for over 20 years and around 3 millionBotox procedures are done each year in the U.S. without any reportedsignificant side effects. There is absolutely no way to get botulism fromthe Botox that is administered in a professional setting because the Botox ispurified extensively and has no live proteins in it. As with any medication,Botox is safe with proper dosing and a trained professional to administer it.
MYTH #2: If I get Botox injected for cosmetic purposes,it will cause a frozen face.
FACT:Botox is designed to relax certain muscles so that skin can recover fromthe motions that cause wrinkles in that area. If too much Botox is injected into acertain muscle, then that muscle may lose the action of expression. If a properlytrained Botox provider injects small doses into specific muscles, then the person canhave a natural softening or smoothing of unwanted wrinkles without compromisingfacial expressions. Botox can give a natural youthful appearance if done properly.
MYTH #3: Botox is painful.
FACT:To receive Botox, a few tiny injections are given without the need for anesthesia. Theneedles are so small that most people feel a tiny sting that goes away immediately, or they feelnothing at all.
MYTH #4: Botox is only used for cosmetic purposes.
FACT:Botox is mainly used for cosmetic purposes such as smoothing or eliminating wrinkles on the face, but there are a wide range of other uses for Botox. As a dentist, I mainly inject Botox for TMJ disc omfort. There are numerous individuals who have struggled with TMJ and jaw pain for years, and Botox is able tohelp relax the jaw muscles which cause most of this discomfort. This procedure is virtually painless and takesonly a few seconds to complete. Results last from 3-6 months.
MYTH #5: Botox is permanent and the results can permanently alter your face.
FACT: Botox is NOT permanent and only lasts for 3-6 months. If you do not like the results of Botox, yousimply wait a few months until it leaves the muscles. At this point, you gradually return to your original stateand your face (or any other area that you received Botox) is unaltered. Regular use of Botox every
3-6 months obtains best results and often you will see the duration of the product last longer. For example, the first time you receive Botox, it may last for 3 months, but the next time you receive it, the results may last4 or 5 months. Regular maintenance tends to make the product last longer between treatments.

Groomingthe
By Jim Browning
On their wedding day, most brideswant to feel like Cinderella, and theywant their bridegroom to look like PrinceCharming, too.
However, when it comes to pre-wedding grooming tips, many men areas clueless as a cartoon ogre, even inthis modern metro-sexual world.
Yet, more men are beginning toappreciate that looking good doesnt lessen their manly dignity. The grooms appearanceon his wedding day is just as important as that of his beautiful bride.
Dont risk a hair disaster on such a specialday with a completely new hairstyle. A finalhaircut one week before the date allowsenough time for a grooms hair to lookfreshly trimmed but not too newly cut.
To avoid a shaving rash, try using a foamlathering agent, rather than a cream. Also, use plenty of hot water and shave only witha new, sharp razor in slow, short strokes inthe direction the hair grows.
Grooms who sport a beard should tidyand trim their facial hair a day or twobefore the wedding and should not forgetto remove any unsightly nose and ear hair. For unwanted chest and back body hair, consider waxing.
For a glow to rival that of the beamingbride, a facial will cleanse and exfoliate theskin and banish any blemishes. As they canleave some residual redness, facials shouldbe done no later than three days beforethe wedding.
While many of these tips can be performedby the prospective groom himself at little cost, some may require the paid assistance of atrusted professional, especially haircuts, waxing, and facials.
Since brides go to great lengths to looklike princesses for their future husbands, grooms should take the small steps requiredto look less like a common pauper and more
like a crowned prince. For many couples, weddings are a
once-in-a-lifetime experience, the memoryof which they cherish forever in their hearts.
When the time comes, youll both bemore proud to show your weddingpictures to your grandchildren whengrandpa looks more like PrinceCharming and less like Shrek.
A manicure is mandatory to makefingernails presentable for thoseclose-up photographs of registersignings and rings, and a pedicurewill provide beach-ready feet fornewlyweds headed for tropicaldestinations.
For a clean, kissable mouth and adazzling photogenic smile, teethshould be brushed thoroughly, along with cleaning the tongue, followed by flossing and the useof an oral neutralizing mouthwash.Keep chewing gum handy forafter consuming food andbeverages, too.
Sweating may be a problem forsome grooms due to nervousnessand indoor spaces that areoverheated or over crowded, sousing an effective anti-perspirant/deodorant will help prevent anyunwanted body odor or unsightly
sweat patches; however, cologneshould be used sparingly.

Jennifer Jimenez grew up as a people pleaser. Making other people smile andhappy has been an underlying driving force in my life, Jennifer says. That driving force and a few other circumstances led Jennifer to her vocation, ownerof The Smitten Bride Inc. an all-inclusive wedding planning business in Chicago, Il l inois.Jennifer, a native of Owensboro, came to Bowling Green in 2002 as a WKU student. When she graduated from Western in 2005, she left Bowling Green to travel the world! This fueled my passion for art, style, and different cultures, Jennifer explained. That passion, coupled with her natural desire to make people happy, provided theworking formula for her career. Jennifer started working weddings with her thenboyfriend, now her husband, who is a wedding photographer. Jennifer noticed thatweddings are such a happy, special time for families, but she also realized that mostbrides need help to pull everything together for their big day.She has obviously done many things right! Her business, The Smitten Bride Inc., hasbeen honored as Best of the Knot for Chicago The business has also been featured onTLC The Learning Channel) a cable TV specialty channel owned by DiscoveryCommunications. When asked why one should hire a wedding planner, Jennifer explains:1) IT SAVES TIME - the wedding planner does all the calling, ordering, and detail work, arge and small;2) IT SAVES MONEY - wedding planners have valuable contacts with vendors who givehem discounts and special advantages;3) IT SAVES STRESS - There are so many unexpected circumstances that need to be dealtwith - even the day of the wedding. The wedding planner heads off and solves allproblems so the family can just enjoy the day; and...4) IT SAVES CONFUSION - the wedding planner makes detailed itineraries for all involvedincluding vendors) assuring that everything happens on time.

How does a successful attorney andfamily man transform into a singer/guitar
player...with a little luck and PRACTICE!
John McCracken started playing pianowhen he was 6 years old and gravitated toguitar when he was 12.
By the time John was in high school inFranklin, Kentucky, he was in a rock
band playing gigs at high schooland local parties. We thoughtwe were much better than wereally were, John remembers.
Music became a way toearn extra money when Johnwas a WKU student. Bennie Beach, who kept him busy playing 5 or 6 nights a week at venues likeBriarpatch, Parakeet, and college events, managed him. As a guitar minor in college, John seriouslyplanned to pursue a career in music. Then one day, my dad invited me to lunch for a serious, come-to-
Jesus meeting. Dad asked me to consider whether I thought I could support myself and a family in themusic world.
Shortly after that conversation, John was offered a job as a session guitarist at Warner Brothers.Remembering the conversation with his Dad, John asked the Warner Bros. representative,In 5 years will I have a job with you guys? When the answer was No guarantees in this business,John realized he was at the proverbial fork in the road. He turned the job down, finished his senioryear at WKU, and entered law school at Cumberland School of Law, Stamford University, in
Birmingham, Alabama. Thus began an 18-year hiatus from music. Then in 2001, John saw an ad in the newspaper that
invited vocalists to audition for the Beatles group with the Bowling Green Orchestra. Hegot the part! That was the start of a rewarding outlet for arockerat heart!
John has been playing and singing with the Rewinders for 11 years now. Theyperform with orchestras to do shows such as Beatlemania, Eagles Tribute, 70s
Show, Mo-Town, Country Show, 1 Hit Wonders, Rockin Christmas, andBritish Invasion. John has loved getting to play with the orchestra,
travel, and meet new people. He also loves working with theRewinders band members who are dedicated to doing whatit takes to give the audience their moneys worth!
I would never have thought, 20 years ago, that I wouldend up playing in a rock bandwith an orchestra as back up.Johns dad died in 1994, so henever got to see his serious-minded attorney sonrockin onstage. However, John says, Iknow he watches me.
John is a partner with the
law firm McCracken and Judd,PLLC.
