It was officially named in honour of Antonio José de Sucre, a hero of the Ecuadorian and Hispanic American independence. The airport is located on a plain in the eastern suburbs of the city of Quito, in the town of Tababela, 25 kilometres from the historic centre of the city. The Mariscal Sucre International airport has the largest movement of passengers in the country (48.36% in 2013), and its administration is contracted to the company Quiport until 2041.

The Mariscal Sucre International Airport building takes up 70 hectares of a 1,500-hectare plot. The international 38,000 m passenger terminal was initially 2
estimated to be used by five million passengers a year. The 7,910 m national terminal, inaugurated in May 2015, has 10 boarding halls over two levels. 2
The runway is 4,100 metres long, making it the longest runway in Ecuador and of any capital city in South America. The runway can receive the largest aircraft available today, including the Boeing 747 or the Airbus A380. Construction of a second runway is planned in order to meet the projected demand. The control tower is 41 m high.
