“My time at BC as a student athlete has been much more than what happens on the ice, I know winning and being successful is fun, but there is so much more behind that. There’s the morning lifts and the summers spent squatting and running and the days when you want to do anything but go to practice but you still do because you know there are 20 other girls who are counting on you to be there to push them and push yourself to be more than you thought you ever could. For us, it’s not about making it to the big leagues for the big bucks, because when our four years are up, hockey is done. For us, it’s for the love of the game and the lessons you learn with the family you will have for the rest of your life. ” - Captain Colleen Harris ‘09

“BC hockey has given me the opportunities to grow both as a person and an athlete over the past two years. From the moment I stepped on campus my freshman year, I have had twenty best friends who I can turn to both on and off the ice. While the satisfaction and thrill of winning games and championships drive us everyday, it is the memories and friendships I have made away from the rink that will last a lifetime” - Molly Schaus ‘10

“Since I have been a student athlete at BC hockey has been my inspira-tion for everything I do. It has made me be a better daughter, sister, student, and teammate. It requires so much time and dedication but the people who I have spent these past four years with have made it such an amazing experience. I would do it all over again in a heart beat. “ - Maggie Taverna ‘09

“Playing hockey at Boston College has brought me the best times of my life and helped me to fi nd 20 new best friends. The rink is the one place in the world where everything can be right no matter what’s happening on the outside. The locker room’s become the place I can always go to fi nd my happiness.”-Katelyn Kurth ‘11

“My experience with BC Hockey has been a unique one that has taught me how to persevere through some diffi cult times. But it’s that pain that makes the joy of victory, on and off the ice, that much better. This team is a sisterhood, and that experience can rarely be found anywhere else.”-Megan Keever ‘10

2008-09 Outlook2008-09 OutlookAs the Boston College women’s ice hockey team takes to the ice for the 2008-2009 season it hopes to build on the experience and talent of its upperclassmen and welcome a brand new group of talented young women to its ranks.

The 2007-2008 season was a year of high expectations for the Eagles, with new coaches Katie King and Courtney Kennedy who brought a wealth of collegiate and international playing experience to the program and a confident outlook after making it the Frozen Four in 2006-07. BC finished the season 14-13-7 (9-9-3 in Hockey East). The Eagles will look to be back in fighting form in 2008-09 after missing the postseason last year.

Head coach Katie King will be looking for continued improvement from her squad and looks to build on the success of the program.

“We’re really excited about this season. We have a great mix of experienced players and new comers that makes for a great team,” King said.

New faces will be joining the Eagles this season, Mike Doneghey, a standout goalie for Merrimack in the early 90s will join the coaching staff as a volunteer coach. Doneghey will work primarily with the goaltenders.

“It’s great having Mike on board,” King said. “He brings a lot of coaching experience to our staff and will definitely help our goalies out tremendously.”

King named seniors Colleen Harris and Maggie Taverna and junior Tracy Johnson captains for the 2008-08 season. Harris, a fifth-year senior brings both leadership and a wealth of talent to the Eagles. Taverna is an anchor for BC on the blue line, leading the Eagles defensive unit in points with 12 and a +8 rating for the 2007-2008 season. Taverna also brings international experience to the Eagles as a two-time member of USA Women’s U-22 team. Johnson is a consistent force for BC on the blue line, playing in every game of her freshman and sophomore seasons.

Senior Colleen Harris

“Leadership is huge with our season being so long, and I think these 3 are the perfect fit. Colleen is a 5th year who has a lot of experience with Boston College. She’ll be the backbone of this team,” King said. “Maggie and Tracy are also very well respected by their teammates and coaches. All three will do a tremendous job for our team!”

Joining the three captains to help lead the team in the new season are seniors Brie Baskin, Stephanie Olchowski, Shannon Webster, Lauren Wiedmeier, Meghan Fardelmann and Becky Zavisa.

OffenseThe forward line returns nine players in 2008-2009, including the Eagles top three goal scorers Kelli Stack, Allie Thunstrom and Meghan Fardelmann.

“We have a very potent offense this year. We have our top scorers for the last few years returning with Kelli Stack, Allie Thunstrom, and Meghan Fardelmann. I’m also excited to see the senior campaign of Becky Zavisza too,” King said.

Joining them will be seniors Webster, Zavisa, Harris, Wiedmeier and junior Megan Keever. King will also look to deepen her lines with the addition of five newcomers in Alison Szlosek, Megan Shea, Mary Restuccia, Danielle Welch and Andrea Green.

“In addition to our upperclassmen, we have some very crafty freshman forwards in Mary Restuccia, Danielle Welch, Andrea Green and Megan Shea who we look to fill in for the student-athlete’s that graduated. I’m very excited to see this creative offense work together,” King said.Maggie Taverna

The blue line returns four members of the 2007-2008 team including Maggie Taverna and Katelyn Kurth who led the defense in scoring with 12 and 10 points respectively.

“We have 5 resturners back on defense this year. Maggie and Tracy will lead the charge back there,” King said. “And we are looking for great things from Steph and Katelyn as well. Kristen and Brie will round out the d and be very solid back there as well!”

Seniors Stephanie Olchowski and Brie Baskin, along with junior Tracy Johnson will also look to deepen the defensive unit. Newcomer Kristin Regan will look to have an impact on the blue line as well.

GoaltendersJunior Molly Schaus will be back between the pipes for the Eagles and looking to add to her growing resume of BC records. Last season Schaus broke her own record for single-season saves and is climbing the ranks in the career saves column as well.

Joining Schaus are sophomore goaltender Amanda Rothschild and new addition Kiera Kingston.

“We are excited to have Molly back again for her junior year,” King said. “She’s a great goaltender and will continue to improve with Mike helping out with the goalies. Kiera and Amanda will be a great help back there as well as they look to log some minutes and gain some experience in this new season!”

ScheduleThe Eagles open the 2008-2009 season at home against Clarkson University on October 4. They are 2-2-1 against the Golden Knights with their last meeting coming in a 5-0 win back in January of 2007. The first Hockey East game of the season is against the New Hampshire Lady Wildcats in Durham on Oct. 8.

BC will look to be dominant in league play after earning the number two spot and two first place votes in the Hockey East pre-season coaches poll. A rule change in Hockey East will a new twist to the Eagles season in ’08-09, shootouts will take place, eliminating the tie column from Hockey East statistics.

The Eagle’s non-conference schedule includes a January full of away games against the likes of Colgate, Yale and St. Lawrence as well as regional rivals Quinnipiac and Dartmouth.

The 31st Annual Women’s Beanpot will be hosted by Northeastern, held at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass. BC will play host Northeastern in the first round on Tuesday Feb. 3 at 8 p.m. The championship and consolation rounds will be played one week later on Feb. 10 at 5 and 8 p.m.

Coach King and the Eagles have high hopes for the 2008-09 season and are looking to make their presence felt both in Hockey East and on the national level.

“We’re looking for big things from this ‘08-’09 team. We have a great group of kids who want to learn, have fun, and be successful on and off the ice! That always makes for a fun season,” King said.
