HAWKS PICKED FIFTH IN PRESEASON POLLMonmouth was selected fi fth in the NEC Preseason Poll, conducted by the league's head coaches. The fi fth place selection would be MU's lowest fi nish since 2001, if the preseason poll holds true to form. The Hawks have landed in third and fourth place ties the last six seasons. Defending regular season champion Long Island was selected as the preseason favorite with six fi rst place votes, while defending NEC tournament champion Robert Morris was selected second and had three votes for the top spot. Quinnipiac earned the remaining two fi rst-place votes to fi nish third in the poll fol-lowed by Sacred Heart in fourth and the Hawks in fi fth. St. Francis (N.Y.) was tabbed sixth, followed by Fairleigh Dickinson in seventh, Mount St. Mary’s in eighth and Saint Francis (Pa.) in the ninth spot. Central Connecticut State and Wagner rounded out the preseason rankings in a tie for tenth.

"WE'RE GOING STREAKING."MU’s longest win streak in its Division I history is 10 games, which was done twice, once during the 1986-1987 season, and once again dur ing 1993-1994. The Blue and White registered two three-game winning streaks last season, their most since winning fi ve straight games in 2006.

HOME SWEET HOME The Monmouth women’s basketball team has posted a 59-35 mark in Boylan Gym dur-ing the last seven seasons, including an 12-3 campaign during the 2004-05 season. Monmouth was 10-5 at home in 2006-07 and posted a fi ve-game home win streak. The Hawks' 12 wins at home two years ago was the most regular season victories in Boylan since the 1985-86 season. They also went 9-0 in NEC home games that season, the fi rst time in school history the Blue and White posted such a ledger.

LET'S TAKE THIS SHOW ON THE ROADMonmouth has won 43 road games since 2001, including going 10-2 away from the confi nes of Boylan Gym in 2002-03. The Hawks also posted an 8-1 road record against Northeast Conference opponents that season. In fi ve of the last six seasons, the Hawks have posted a winning road record in conference play, including going 5-4 away from home in the league in each of the last two seasons.

"WHAT IF ANDY GETS ANOTHER DINOSAUR? A MEAN ONE? I DON’T THINK I CAN TAKE THAT KIND OF REJECTION."Monmouth holds the NEC record for blocks in a single game (15), a record that was set against Fairleigh Dickinson on January 9, 1999. Last season, the Hawks ranked sixth in the league in blocked shots per game (2.87).

"I’VE SEEN YOU GUYS CAN SHOOT BUT THERE’S MORE TO THE GAME THAN SHOOTING. THERE’S FUNDAMENTALS AND DEFENSE."Last year, the Hawks held their opponents to a combined 38.0 % shooting from the fl oor, which ranked second in the league. The Blue and White also ranked fourth in the NEC in

scoring defense (62.7 ppg).

"NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL A CLOSE ENCOUNTER."The Hawks are 15-11 in games decided by fi ve points or less during the last three seasons, in-cluding a 6-1 mark last season. The only game Monmouth lost last year by fi ve points or less was to Sacred Heart in the NEC Semifi nals, a game they trailed by 16 in and rallied to take a second half lead before ultimately falling to the Pioneers.

"YOU’RE JUST STALLING CUZ YOU’RE NOT QUICK ENOUGH TO THINK OF A COMEBACK."Monmouth had three comeback wins last season, against Saint Peter's (11/20/06), Lehigh (11/29/06) and Mount St. Mary's (01/06/07). Against the Pea-hens, the Hawks trailed 61-56 with three seconds remaining after trailing 33-22 at the half. Brianne Edwards cut the Saint Peter's lead to two, 61-59, by connecting on a three-pointer. Saint Peter’s then

turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds play and Charisse Johnson hit a buzzer-beating three-point game-winner. Against Lehigh MU trailed by seven with 2:33 left in the game, but came back to force overtime, where Monmouth outscored Lehigh 14-7 in the extra session. Then against Mount, the Hawks, who trailed by as much as 13 in the second half, had six players score in double digits to earn the win.

WANT THAT OLD THING BACKMonmouth University women’s basketball team enjoyed their best season in three years last year and was a few minutes away from playing for the Northeast Conference Championship. The team returns all fi ve starters and nearly 95 % of its scoring this year. The Hawks’ won 18 games for only the second time since 1987-88 and they did so with a team that lost one player, senior Charisse Johnson, to graduation.

"I THOUGHT THIS MIGHT BE A GOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR IMPROVING THE FOUNDATIONS."The Hawks went 18-13 last season, including fi nishing in a fourth-place tie at 10-8 in the vastly-improved Northeast Conference. The NEC was the 20th rated confer-ence in the country this season, as three teams amassed at least 20 wins. The ten conference wins MU totaled this season marks the ninth straight year the Hawks have won double-digit conference games.

NONCONFERENCE SUCCESS The Hawks enjoyed unprecedented success in their non-conference schedule last season, going 8-5, the most non-league wins MU has had since joining the NEC in the 1986-87 season. Included in those eight wins are victories over Marshall at the Caribbean Classic in Cancun, Mexico as well as Lehigh and American of the Patriot League.

TRIPLE YOUR PLEASUREThe school mark for three-pointers made in a game is 12 set on February 14, 2005, when the Hawks hit 12-of-24 from beyond the arc in a loss at St. Francis [Pa.], led by Niamh Dwyer's career-high 31 points, which included a school-record eight made treys during the game.

VETERAN MANEUVERMonmouth's roster, which had only one senior on it a season ago, now features fi ve seniors and fi ve juniors to go along with fi ve underclassmen. The Hawks return players who accounted for an astounding 96 % of the team's total minutes played from a season ago.

SPANNING THE GARDEN STATEThe Hawks went 4-1 against teams from New Jersey last season, including a 3-0 mark against non-conference teams from the state. Monmouth defeated Rider 82-70 last season (11/17/06), then came back in their very next game and topped Saint Peter's 62-61 (11/20/06) on a Charisse Johnson buzzer-beating three-pointer. MU defeated NJIT 58-54 (01/23/07) before splitting with Fairleigh Dickinson late in the season, dropping the Knights 73-47 (02/21/07) before falling 74-59 in the regular season fi nale (02/27/07).

JIMENEZ TAMES TERRIERS WITH CLUTCH PERFORMANCEMarisa Jimenez showed she can take a game over in Monmouth's 69-63 win over St. Francis [N.Y.] (12/10/06). She scored ten straight points late in the second half to propel the Monmouth University women’s basketball team to a victory in their Northeast Conference opener in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. a season ago. She also had a key steal as she swiped the ball from Katja Bavendam in the post to preserve a 65-60 lead with just under a minute left in the game.

MIAMI VICEIn Monmouth's 65-59 win over Fordham at the University of Miami Thanksgiving Tournament, Veronica Randolph scored a game-high 18 points in front of a large gathering of family and friends. The Deerfi eld Beach, Fla. native was named to the all-tournament team after leading MU to a third place fi nish.

PLAYING THE PERCENTAGESThe Monmouth defense has been something that the program takes pride in, and last season, they lived up to that committment. The Hawks ranked second in the

Northeast Conference in fi eld goal per-centage defense, holding opponents to 38 % fi eld goal shooting. MU also ranked fi rst in the league in 3-pt. fi eld goal per-centage defense, only allowing 28.7 % of opponents trifectas to go in.

I WALK THE LINEBrianne Edwards was 10th in the NEC in free-throw shooting last season, connect-ing on 77.9 % of her attempts from the charity stripe (88-of-113). Even though she was tenth in the league on the season, she didn't even lead the Hawks, as Lindsey Zegowitz's 78.2 % was a team-high. She didn't appear among the league's leaders, however, because she didn't have enough attempts to qualify. In all, fi ve Hawks sported free throw percentages of 70 % or higher last season.

FOUL SHOOTINGThe Monmouth record for fewest free throw attempts in a game is three. MU tied that record two years ago in their season-opening loss to Delaware State (DSU attempted 15 FTs in the six point win). This marked the third time in school history the Hawks only attempted three foul shots, all losses.

I LOVE THE 80'SLast season the Hawks put up 80 points on three different occasions, winning all three contests. The fi rst came in their 82-70 home win over Rider (11/17/06), where fi ve players scored in double fi g-ures. The second time was in their 95-91 double overtime win over Mount St. Mary's (01/06/07), where six players scored in double fi gures, and the last was their 83-54 win over Wagner (01/08/07), where 11 players scored.

DROPPING DIMESMonmouth dished out 25 assists as a team in its win over Navy two years ago (11/19/05). The 25 dimes was the high-est team total by the Hawks since they handed out 27 assists in a 101-89 win over Robert Morris on February 5, 2001. The school record for single-game as-sists is 29 set on January 18, 1997 in a win over Fairleigh Dickinson. MU ranked fourth in the NEC with 13.52 assists per game last season. Twice last season, the Hawks logged 20 or more assists in a game, splitting those games.

TOURNAMENT TIMEAfter consecutive fi rst round losses in the Northeast Conference Tournament, the fi fth-seeded Hawks defeated fourth-seeded Quinnipiac at the new TD Banknorth Sports Center last season 63-58 in the quarterfi nal round. Monmouth avenged a fi rst-round home exit at the hands of Quinnipiac in 2005 with the win. Veronica Randolph led four Hawks in double fi gures, and all scorers, with 18 points in the game. Marisa Jimenez added 15 points, including hitting 3-of-4 from three-point range, while Jennifer Bender logged a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

PATRIOT GAMESMonmouth played four schools that compete in the Patriot League last season, going 3-1 against Bucknell, Lehigh, American and Lafayette. The Hawks fell to the Bison at the Caribbean Classic (11/24/06) before defeating Lehigh 72-65 in overtime at home (11/29/06). They then topped American 76-64 (12/22/06) before beating Lafayette 79-62 (12/31/06), both at home. This season, MU already fell 65-64 at Lafayette. Monmouth is 10-5 all-time against the Patriot League.

COACHING CAROUSELThis season, there are four new coaches at Northeast Conference member schools. The changes include Beryl Piper returning to her alma mater Central Connecticut State, Peter Cinella taking over at Fairleigh Dickinson, Bryan Whitten at Mount St. Mary's and Susan Robinson Fruchtl now at the helm of Saint Francis (Pa.). Piper enjoyed an extremely successful head coaching stint at New Britain High School, and she will now try to turn around a program that has not fi nished higher than ninth in the NEC standings in any of the past fi ve seasons. In 14 seasons at AIC, Cinella’s teams posted nine 20-win seasons en route to making him the winningest coach in program history. Whitten, who amassed 12 years of head coaching experience at Division III Kings College before his most recent assistant coaching stint at Virginia Commonwealth, must now fi nd a way to continue the Mount’s restoration.

HAWKS RADIO COVERAGE Again this season, Monmouth University women's basketball will be available on WMCX, the school's student-run radio station, which broadcasts at 88.9 FM and also on www.wmcx.com. A staff of student radio personalties, led by Sports Director Pete Mulroy, will handle the play-by-play and color commentary for each game.

THREE'S ARE WILDMonmouth hit eight three-pointers in a game three times last season, going 2-1 in those games. The Hawks accomplished the feat in back-to-back games, going 8-of-22 from distance in their 95-91 double overtime home win over Mount St. Mary's (01/06/07) and then shooting 8-for-23 in their 83-54 win over Wagner (01/08/07). They then went 8-of-31 from three-point range in a 69-57 loss at Quinnipiac (01/15/07).

HOT-SHOOTING HAWKSThe Hawks shot over 50 % from the fl oor fi ve times last season, including four times at home, going 5-0 in those games. They shot 52.6 % in their 82-70 sea-son-opening win over Rider (11/17/06), and then shot exactly 50 % (25-of-50) in a 76-64 win over American (12/22/06). They then shot a blistering 56.8 % in a 73-65 win at Central Connecticut State (01/20/07) before coming back home to shoot 53.3 % in a 65-47 win over St. Francis [N.Y.](02/03/07). The fi nal time MU topped the 50 % mark was in their 73-47 win over Fairleigh Dickinson (02/21/07), when they shot 51.1 %.

NEC MARKMonmouth University won its 200th Northeast Conference game on February 21, 2005, when the Hawks defeated Wagner, 71-58. MU has won double-digit NEC games nine years in a row, with their most league wins coming in back-to-back unbeaten seasons in league play (16-0) in 1986-87 and 1987-88 under coach Mickey McGlade.

"MITCH. YOU’RE ON THE REBOUND. YOU’RE LIKE AN INJURED YOUNG FAWN WHO’S BEEN NURSED BACK TO HEALTH AND IS FINALLY GOING TO BE RE-LEASED BACK INTO THE WILDERNESS."Monmouth led the Northeast Conference in rebounding last season, pulling down an average 41.0 rebounds a contest, even though no Hawk ranked in the top 17 in the category individually. MU ranked third in the league in defensive rebounds and second in offensive rebounds per game. Jennifer Bender led the team with 5.8 rebounds per game, while teammate Veronica Randolph was second with 5.2 caroms a contest.

IT FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIMEIn Monmouth's 65-64 last second loss at Lafayette (11/12/07), two Hawks scored their fi rst ever collegiate baskets. Sophomore Kevaney Martin canned a left baseline jumper, her fi rst collegiate basket, to give the Hawks a 46-45 at the 12:00 mark

of the second half, and freshman Samantha Schanuel tied the game up for Monmouth at 53-53 with her fi rst collegiate basket at the 8:15 mark of the second half. The Hawks took a slim 59-57 lead after a Bender bucket in the lane with fi ve minutes left in the game. Also, freshman Elizabeth Kudirka scored her fi rst career points in MU's home loss to St. John's (11/28/07).

BIG MAAC ATTACKMonmouth owns a 61-44 record all-time against teams from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, including a 4-0 mark against Iona. MU did fall at Rider 59-46 in their fi rst game this season (11/09/07). The 61 all-time wins are the second most for the Hawks against another conference, with the most being their 218 wins against Northeast Conference opponents.

Mu.A.S.H UNITMonmouth has been hit hard by the injury bug this season. The Hawks were without two starting guards, Brianne Edwards and Marisa Jimenez, for the fi rst fi ve games this season. Edwards was recovering from offseason knee surgery, while Jimenez, who returned against St. John's, missed time with an injured shoulder. Senior Lindsey Zegowitz, last season's starting center, is out indefi nitely with a torn ACL. All together, members of the Monmouth University women's basketball team have missed a combined 32 games due to injury so far this season.

POISON IVYMonmouth is 5-7 all-time against teams from the Ivy League, including a 3-2 mark against Princeton after their 91-65 win over the Tigers this season (01/02/08). The game marked the fi rst time this season that Monmouth has topped the 60-point plateau, and was their most points scored in a non-overtime game since they dropped 101 on Robert Morris on February 5, 2001. Jennifer Bender scored a season-high 19 points and pulled down a career-high seven rebounds for her seventh career double-double in the game. The Haws shot 50 % from the fl oor against the Tigers, outrebounded them 50-30 and had more assists (21) than turnovers (19) in a game for the fi rst time all season.

THIRTYSOMETHINGMonmouth head coach Michele Baxter won her 30th Northeast Conference game on January 14, 2008 when the Hawks topped Wagner at home 66-58. The win ran Baxter's record against the Seahawks to a perfect 7-0 in her 3+ plus seasons at the helm of the program, and was MU's fi rst NEC win of this season.

MAY I APPROACH THE BENCH?The Hawk's bench has been a consistent source of offense all season long. The MU reserves have outscored the opponent's bench in 12 of 15 games so far this season, and is averaging 20 points per contest. This season, the bench has scored over 20 points in nine games, with their season-high being their 38-point outburst in Monmouth's 91-65 win over Princeton (01/02/08).

UP NEXTMonmouth returns to action on Monday, January 21 when they host Central Connecticut State at 7:00 p.m.
