Just like everywhere else, our school grounds could definitely use it. We are very proud of our students’ successes in many areas in this past fortnight. Our track and field athletes performed very well at the recent zone carnival. Our debating team won against Ingleburn Public School and just this week a small number of students competed in a Regional Spelling Bee, hosted by SSPS. Congratulations to these students on their recent achievements. Last week our school’s Market Day was a wonderful success. Our Stage 3 students had many entrepreneurial experiences in the lead up. Most of the credit for the planning and success of the day can be given to the students and our Stage 3 team of teachers and our office staff. The students were afforded trust and support by their teachers to undertake such a huge responsibility and experience. Well done to all. Attendance, Punctuality and a Good Night’s Sleep! Spring is a great time of year and many of us won’t miss the cold winter mornings getting ready for school. However, we remain very concerned about the amount of education some of our students are missing. If your child’s attendance falls below 85% our school begins the formal monitoring process as required by the Department of Education. That can be 7 or more absent days in a term. Illnesses affect all students from time to time and are a justified reason for an absence. The large number of children arriving late, on a regular basis, is saddening as this detracts from their academic, social and emotional wellbeing.

…. From the Senior Executive We seek your support with ensuring your child has had enough sleep at night. Some students are informing us of regular late nights. Lack of sleep is causing some of our students to be lethargic and/or irritable which impedes their ability to learn. We have great teachers but it is challenging to teach absent, late or sleepy students. Please call our office if you require any support in these matters.

Parents have asked about 'Five Finger Friends', our award system and what it means to be a safe, kind, respectful learner. Pop in and join us in the hall 9 - 10am for some morning tea and a chat. Toddlers welcome. Mrs Bryant Assistant Principal MARKET DAY Market day is the day of the year that everyone looks forward to. We had so many stalls of all kinds such as Fairy Floss, Snow Cones, Popcorn, Hair Spray, Sweet Treats, Haunted House, Sponge Throw, Soft Drinks and more! We made many memories that we’ll never forget. When we’re in high school and we make new friends, they ask us “What was primary school like”? We want to have those memories where we remember Sackville Street Public School as the best school ever! We want to grow up and look back at SSPS to never forget the reason why we are at this school in the first place. I know Market Day sounds amazing and I bet you’re already looking forward to it next year Market Day will definitely be something we will always remember and miss when we go to high school because let's be real we’re all going there but no other school will ever be as good as ours! Market Day was a special day for everyone. We had stalls that Stage 3 run to sell items for all to enjoy! We put a lot of hard work into it as a result with the money raised for the Year 6 Farewell of 2019. It put a lot of smiles on everyone’s faces therefore we would like to give a very big thank you to the parents, students, caregivers, teachers and organisations for all the awesome donations. Everyone would also love to thank The Market Day Team and Mrs Murhan for making this memorable day happen. By Mia, Jess and Shante Market day 2019 was eventful, it was held on the 5th of September 2019, we had our normal stalls like sponge throw, haunted house ,hair spray, the raffle, and teacher pie face. We also had the giants AFL with a couple prizes to win.it was a huge success this year, like many years. The food was amazing, we had fairy floss, popcorn and snow cones thanks to hyper foods . We also had showbags like crazy tricks, inflatables, lollies and glow sticks. This year we had a token method which was different because we usually use money but the market day team set it all up for us we also give a special thanks to all staff, market day team and the students for making the day great. By Dakota Market Day was very fun and good At Market Day there were lots of things to do Really awesome Kind of the best event I’ve been at Every year I have been here, so far, the best ever The food was the best part Doing all the fun stuff made the hard stuff worthwhile All the times I have been at market day I wish we could have it every day Yet this one was the best! PARENT PAYMENTS

When making any cash payments to the school office, students from the same family are able to pay in the one envelope. However, each student needs to have a separate signed permission note. Envelopes and payments do not have to be returned to each student’s class or the class teacher. Payments should be placed in the fee box in the office. If there are multiple payments per student they also can be placed in the one envelope. This saves the office staff time when creating receipts. Our preferred method of payment is Parent Online Payment (POP). Visit the school website www.sackvillst-p.school.nsw.edu.au and look for the make a payment tab (as shown below). Use the student(s) last name as the reference. Please ensure the required note is returned to the office within 24hours of the payment. Payments may also be made via EFTPOS at the school office between 8.30am and 3.00pm.

KEEN KINDERS STARTS NEXT WEEK

Our Keen Kinders Transition will start on Wednesday 18th September. This involves a series of 45 minute sessions over several weeks where children spend time participating in activities with our current students. This is a great way for your child to get to know our school. It also helps us to get to know each child a little better and begin building a rapport with them before they start ‘big school’. Following Keen Kinders, there will be an orientation day where parents and caregivers will be provided with more information and taken on a tour of the school. Children will spend this time in classrooms. Keen Kinder dates are as follows:

• Session 1 – Wednesday 18th September 9:15am – 10:00am • Session 2 – Wednesday 25th September 9:15am – 10:00am • Session 3 – Wednesday 23rd October 9:15am – 10:00am • Session 4 - Wednesday 30th October 9:15am – 10:00am • Session 5 - Wednesday 6th November 9:15am – 10:00am • Session 6 - Wednesday 13th November 9:15am – 10:00am

Busy Bees SPS Top Tip: No such thing as a silly question!

Asking your child different types of questions is a great way to help build not only their language, but also their skills in comprehension (understanding of language), reasoning, problem solving and predicting. Blank’s Levels of Questioning is a framework developed by psychologist Marion Blank which outlines 4 levels of questions, moving from simple questions about the here and now to more difficult questions about abstract concepts. It is important to choose questions that are suitable for the child’s level of ability, then build your way up the levels. Level 1: ‘Look at it’ Talking about things that are present (here and now). Usually involves simple responses, such as naming things. Understanding of these questions develops around 3 years of age. Examples of Level 1 questions are:

• What/Who is that? • What is ___ doing? • Find one like this. (Matching) • What did you see? (Remembering items in books, or something the child has seen before) • What did you hear?

Level 2: ‘Describe it’ Still talking about things that are present (here and now), but in more detail. Involves describing less obvious details. Understanding of these questions develops around 4 years of age. Examples of Level 2 questions are:

• What has happened? • Who/What/Where is ___? (Remembering information) • What size/shape/colour is it? • How does it smell/sound/taste/feel? • How are these different?

Level 3: ‘Think about it’ Talking about things that may not be directly present. Usually involves using higher-level thinking, including making predictions or imagining another person’s perspective. Understanding of these questions develops around 4 ½ years of age. Examples of Level 3 questions are:

• What will happen next? • What is a ___? (Definition) • How are these the same? • What could he/she say? • Make these (pictures) into a story. Which one is first/middle/last? (Rearranging pictures into sequence of events)

Level 4: ‘Give reasoning for it’ Talking about things that are not present (abstract). Involves using reasoning, problem solving, and drawing on past experiences and knowledge. Understanding of these questions develops around 5-6 years of age. Examples of Level 4 questions are:

• What will happen? (Predicting) • What could you do? (Providing a solution) • Why did it happen? (Identifying the cause) • Why can’t we…? (Explaining obstacles to goal)

If you have any specific question, please send them through to: [email protected] Thank you,

Dania (Supervising SP) + Lillian (SP Student)
