Tobernalt is a natural spring well situated in a primeval forest. Known locally as the Holy Well, this was once a location for pagan worship. However, tradition holds that St Patrick evangelised pagans at this place and there is strong evidence that he baptised, celebrated Mass and ordained priests at the Holy Well.Garland Sunday celebrations evolved from the pagan festival of Lughanasa - the feast of harvest thanksgiving. It is therefore a fusion of Christian and Celtic tradition. Garland Sunday may still serve as an occasion for thanksgiving but now has a Christian dimension. Many generations have worshipped God on this holy ground and in penal times the Holy Well provided a place for secret worship.Although Catholic emancipation enabled Catholics to once again worship in Churches and Chapels, many continued to flock to Tobernalt for private devotions. Mass has been celebrated every year at Garland Weekend with the exception of 1922 when Mass was cancelled due to the Civil War.Like the natural spring water ever present at Tobernalt the faith continues to flourish in the hearts of every pilgrim. The living waters of the risen Lord brings healing and renewal to those who visit this sacred and historic site. Next weekend we journey in prayer and reflection. Let us pray for good weather and a joyous celebration.  Tobernalt - A Place of Prayer Tobernalt Holy Well invites the visitor to pray and reflect. The invitation to pause and pray, light a candle or gently walk around the grounds is promoted and encouraged by the various shrine to: The Holy Family, St Anne, the Crucifixion Scene, the Lourdes Grotto, the Stations of

the Cross and the Mysteries of the Rosary. Also, the Mass Rock and the High Altar is a reminder of our faith journey and the sacredness of our spiritual history. The many candelabras allow the visitor to light a candle in prayer and petition and to offer a final prayer as they leave the sacred soil of Tobernalt with a wish and a prayer to return shortly.
