FREE SCHOOL MEALS

Should you be benefitting from Free School Meals? There is national evidence to suggest that more parents in Catholic schools than others do not claim their free school meal entitlement. If you are entitled to claim free school meals for your child(ren), we strongly encourage you to do so. The allowance is automatically added to the student’s ParentPay account daily. There is no need for students to collect tokens etc and so their fellow students are oblivious to the difference. The allowance is £2.25 and for this students can purchase either a hot meal, hot dessert and a bottle of water or a sandwich/panini, cookie and bottle of water. Not only does your family benefit at home, but the College also receives an extra grant called Pupil Premium which is spent on extra learning support.

Additional benefits offered by All Hallows Catholic College If you are in receipt of Free School Meals, All Hallows recognises that there are other expenses that we could assist with. Therefore, we offer the following package for all of our Free School Meal students: · £50 per student per year to use against the cost of trips/resources. Simply let us know what you would like to use the £50 against and we will credit the item on ParentPay. · £100 uniform voucher for Finesse annually, upon receipt of an application form. · Up to 100% of school travel funded by College (up to £430).

Who is eligible for Free School Meals? In England, children are eligible to receive free school meals (FSM) if their parents are in receipt of any of the following benefits: •Income support (IS) •Income Based Jobseekers Allowance (IBJSA) •Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA(IR) •support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 •Child Tax Credit, provided you are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income (as assessed by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) that does not exceed £16,190. •The guaranteed element of State Pension Credit. •Universal credit Children who receive Income Support or Income Based Job Seekers Allowance in their own right are also entitled to receive free school meals. How to claim Free School Meals If you think your child is entitled to free school meals, you’ll need to fill in an application form supplied by your local council.

To apply for Free School Meals with Cheshire East, go to https://form.cheshireeast.gov.uk/AchieveForms/?mode=fill&form_uri=sandbox-publish://AF-Form-169626ea-cd5e-4d5e-92af-a848922d0cd9/definition.json&category=AF-Category-93d41a88-7778-4e1b-ac16-6b591dd324dc If you’d like some advice or support from the College contact Miss Amber Wakefield in the Finance Office on 01625 426138.

INDIA APPEAL

Page 6: 22 January 2016 Newsletter

Students must sign out at the Attendance Office before leaving College to attend a medical appointment. When they return to College the student must sign back in. This ensures registers will be accurate and we know the student is off site should we have a fire alarm. The Attendance Office is located in an office along the RE corridor. We thank parents for making medical appointments, where possible, that do not take up a whole day of schooling. This often allows a student to have their legal registration mark for both morning and afternoon sessions and so their overall attendance does not fall.

MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS DURING THE COLLEGE DAY

Holidays have not been authorised since 1st September 2013 under legislation on all English schools. Requests for holidays must still be made in writing to the appropriate Key Stage leader (Mrs Garvey KS5, Mr Diamond/Mr Blades KS4/KS3), but in the vast majority of cases they will be unauthorised. A Fixed Penalty Notice may be issued of £60 per parent / carer per student, to be paid within 21 days, otherwise the penalty will rise to £120 per parent / carer to be paid within 28 days. If the penalty remains unpaid then the matter will proceed to the Magistrates Court where you will receive a criminal record if you are found guilty. Please can all holiday requests be made well in advance of the holiday being taken if not before the holiday is booked.

HOLIDAY ABSENCE FROM COLLEGE

Whilst the College requires parents to contact us on each day of absence, school policy now requires that any student who accumulates 7 or more days of absence during the course of the academic year will be asked to provide medical confirmation of the need to be absent before any further absences are authorised for medical reasons. This is a necessary measure as we closely monitor absence due to illness / medical reasons in order that we can ensure students are supported where needed. For your information medical confirmation does not have to be a doctor's note but can also take the form of a medical appointment card, a copy of a relevant dated prescription or evidence of medication being taken. If no medical evidence is provided then the absence will be coded as unauthorised. Ten or more unauthorised absences may result in you receiving a Fixed Penalty Notice. This incurs a penalty of £60 per parent / carer to be paid within 21 days, otherwise the penalty will rise to £120 per parent / carer to be paid within 28 days. If the penalty remains unpaid then the matter will proceed to the Magistrates Court where you will receive a criminal record if you are found guilty. The link between attendance and achievement is well researched and documented and students should be aiming for an attendance rate of no less than 97% over the year. Thank you for your continued support with this importance issue.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS

Over the last week of College attendance was as follows: Year 7 - 97.1% (down 0.4% on last week) Year 8 - 95.0% (down 0.9%) Year 9 - 96.0% (up 0.2%, well done Year 9) Year 10 - 95.4% (up 1.0%, well done Year 10) Year 11 - 92.3% (down 1.4%) Year 12 - 93.4% (up 0.8%, well done Year 12) Year 13 - 89.3% (down 3.2%) Attendance between Year 7 and Year 11 last week was 95.1% (down 0.6% from last week and 0.1% lower than the same time last year). Our overall attendance since 2 September 2015 has fallen 0.1% to 95.6%. We aim for 97%. Last week GIRLS attendance (Years 7-11) was 94.9% (down 0.3% on last week), BOYS attendance (Year 7-11) was 95.5% (down 0.3% on last week). Since 2 September 2015 boys attendance between Years 7-11 is 95.8% and girls attendance between Years 7-11 is 95.5%.

CHANGES TO ATTENDANCE POLICY

From September 2015 the College has changed the definition of “persistent absence” we use to include those students who are under 90% attendance. This is in line with national guidelines and increases the threshold from 85% at present.

CAREERS ADVICE FOR STUDENTS

If any parent would like their son or daughter to have a careers interview with Mrs Pilling, our Careers Advisor, this year then please notify the relevant Year Learning Leader who can ensure names are added to the list. Mrs Pilling will prioritise Year 10-13, but students in Years 7-9 are welcome to attend her Thursday lunch time drop in. She uses the Student Support Office based next door to Music.

Most students appreciate the importance of being in College on time. Children who are regularly late do miss out on their education and form bad habits that will not be tolerated in the workplace. We need to inform parents that students must be in the registration form class for the register to be taken at 8.45a.m. This means students should arrive 5-10 minutes earlier in College to be on time. Any student who arrives after 8.45a.m. will receive a L code. Two L codes within a week will result in a whole college detention to be held each Thursday. Any student who arrives after 9.05a.m. will receive a U code. This means they will be classed as absent for the whole morning and this may have consequences for overall attendance. We are aware that College buses are sometimes late and we can confirm these students are not negatively marked in the register when this happens. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter. Gates are manned by members of staff and names will be taken of those students who are late.

British Colleges Cat 3G 2pm – Egerton, Knutsford

MFA back to Winning Ways After a solid performance in Skelmersdale last week, this week MFA travelled to neighbours, Knutsford Academy, looking to kick start the season. The game began at a solid pace, with the home side creating several good

opportunities to score, yet the score stayed 0-0 after some heroic defending notably from goalkeeper Warters. Midway through the 1st half Knutsford were awarded a somewhat soft penalty. The resulting effort hit the post and was slammed home on the rebound by the taker with no touch from an MFA player. The referee rightly awarded MFA a free kick and the goal did not stand. MFA grew into the game and against the run of play took the lead. Good strong play from Niza Chilfya down the left saw is cross find James Robins at the back post to place the ball home. 0-1. Throughout the second half MFA showed great courage and determination, including a string of fine saves from Warters. After a

couple of timely substitutions MFA sealed the much deserved victory when Jack Robinsons clever through ball released Tom Nickson. The winger ran through one on one with the keeper and slotted home, cue the celebrations from players and coaching staff alike. Final Score 0-2 to Macclesfield Football Academy. Paul McGuire said; “I’m absolutely thrilled for the lads today. We rode our luck, but you make your own luck in this game and due to the effort and commitment they showed we deserved it. It’s been a tough period, but we’ve come out of it stronger”. About the end to end action Paul commented; “I’ve seen a lot of games this season, but wow this was a whole new one. How we kept a clean sheet I don’t know. Myself, Byron and Stewart from MTFC thoroughly enjoyed the game, it certainly kept us on the edge of our seats”. Paul McGuire -Manager, Macclesfield Town F.C.
