Dear Parents
Today Mrs Gerhardy ran the first ‘Parent – Teacher Sharing Café’. Talk and activities cen-tred around handwriting in the early years. Many thanks to Mrs Gerhardy and to the parents who came along. The next session will be on Wednesday 8 March at 8.45am and the topic will be ‘Everyday Maths – from the basics’. This topic will cover the five principles of counting and how they are the foundation of our understanding of numeracy.
Ash Wednesday Next Wednesday (1 March) we commence the Lenten Season preparation for Easter with our whole school Mass for Ash Wednesday. Mass commences at 8.45am. Car Park Safety Thank you to everyone who is taking care in the carpark at the beginning and end of each school day. The end of the day is always a difficult time due to the volume of traffic in the car park at the one time. We know everyone is in a hurry to get to their cars as quickly as possi-ble, particularly on the very hot days. It is important that you cross via the crosswalks. The crosswalk nearest the drive through waiting area is manned for the safety of everyone. Naplan The National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national as-sessment of all students in Years 3,5,7 and 9 and all students are expected to participate in the testing. Students will be assessed in language conventions (spelling, grammar and punc-tuation), writing, reading and numeracy. 2017 NAPLAN testing will be conducted from Tues-day 9 May - Thursday 11 May. Parents and Caregivers with children in Years 3 and 5 will receive a 2017 NAPLAN 'Information For Parents' brochure today. This brochure provides information on;
what will be tested when the tests will be held what support parents and the school can provide to students how the results will be reported. Further information about NAPLAN 2017 can be found on the NAPLAN website (nap.edu.au) and the My School website (my school.edu.au)

of the concerts are: Wednesday 5 April at 2pm: ‘W’ Classes (PPW – 6W)

P&F Meeting
On behalf of our P&F Committee, I would like to extend a very warm welcome and invitation to all our parents and carers to attend P&F Meetings this year. The next meeting will be next Mon-
day 27 February at 7.00pm in the Staffroom. Our P&F is a vitally important part of our school community and they provide a wonderful opportunity for parents to meet other parents, make new
friends, find out firsthand about topical issues in the school, enjoy each other’s company and ca-maraderie and build our sense of community and belonging.

25th ANNIVERSARY OF SACRED
HEART PARISH
Sunday 19 February, 2017 was the cul-
mination of a few months of planning to
celebrate the 25TH Anniversary of Sacred
Heart Church on this site at Discovery
Drive, Thornlie.
The original Sacred Heart Church was in
Royal St, Kenwick and when it was de-
cided that Sacred Heart School needed to expand to accom-
modate the rapidly growing population in the Thornlie area,
enough land was purchased to accommodate both a new
school and a new Church.
The Church was opened in February 1992 by Archbishop Bar-
ry Hickey and so it was fitting that he be there on the week-
end to celebrate Mass for our 25th Anniversary.
The Mass was a joyous celebration of Prayer, Music, and Cul-
ture as many parishioners embraced the theme and came
dressed in national dress of their country of origin, read prayers in their language
and also brought symbols from their country.
The parish has evolved and grown over the years through the connection with
Sacred Heart School and as the school is a part of the Parish community, it was
fitting that some school families dressed in their national dress and said prayers
in their native tongue. Special thanks to the Colletti, Didiwik, Seroney families
and previous Phillips and Eagles families. Mrs Higgins was
heard giving an Aboriginal welcome before our Mass com-
menced:
The land we stand on is holy ground.
It’s holy ground because we stand with each other.
It’s holy ground because we are made in the image of
God.
It’s holy ground because we are made in the image of God.
It’s holy ground because God loves each of us and God invites us
to see each other as the likeness of God.
It is important to promote parish/school participation and keep the connection
which happens via the Sacramental programmes, Lenten programmes etc. and
weekend Masses, and for people to know that the Parish is their spiritual home.
More than 500 people continued the celebration with a shared lunch in the Hall.
There was every variety of food and plenty of it.
There was music,
dancing and the
cutting of a special
cake by Father
Tim. It was all in
all a wonderful
day.
Thanks to our photog-
rapher, Mr Maher!!
