Come, Visit the Lord
In The Blessed Sacrament
Mary was directed by the angel Gabriel to name her child Jesus which in Hebrew is Yeshua. In English this name means the one who will save God’s people by forgiving their sins. In today’s gospel passage Jesus is on the way to Jerusalem where he will fulfill his mission to achieve salvation by dying on the cross when he is asked: Lord, will they be few in number who are saved? In response, Jesus directs his followers to strive to enter the kingdom of heaven through the narrow gate. He indicates that getting through this gate will be difficult and require a lot of strength. This kind of talk on the part of Jesus may sound odd and too rigorous for many Christians in this secular culture which encompasses us. Many seem to be under the impression that a person just needs to be as nice as they can be to win a place in heaven. Now Jesus was many things, but nice wasn’t one of them. He was honest and truthful and courageous. He was bold, forthright, and could get in the face of both the religious officials and his own disciples. In the gospel passage we heard today, Jesus was anything but nice when he referred to people claiming to be his followers knocking on the door to heaven after it had been closed as those whom he didn’t even know. But they claimed to have shared meals with him at table. Ouch! What an awful thing it would be to have heaven’s door shut in our faces! So, being saved apparently takes more than just having known some things about Jesus or having shared meals with him at Mass. We get a big clue in John’s Gospel where Jesus states clearly: If you love me you will follow my teachings. This requires two things of us: To know what he teaches by becoming his disciple; and being filled with the Holy Spirit so that we can actually do the kinds of things which Jesus himself did. It would seem like a good idea to ask ourselves: Am I seeking to be a true disciple of Jesus or am I gambling that being a nice person might be enough to make my way through the narrow gate?

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION FOR CHILDREN
The Church has two ways of initiating children. One is for infants and children through approximately the age of five. The other is for unbaptized children who are in the third grade. These children may be eligible for the Journey of Faith for Children provided that they have been enrolled in RE classes the previous year and are enrolled for classes this year. They must also be attending Mass regularly with a Catholic parent or
guardian. If their parents meet the qualifications listed below, they may be prepared for the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation - Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist - after an appropriate time of formation.
Parents must be striving to actively live the faith
Enrollment in ALPHA highly encouraged

We will no longer publish children’s contributions since so few children are being introduced by their parents to the importance of sacrificial giving. This is not a healthy sign.

Our next group will meet August 25th at 6:30pm in the McConnell Room. If you have yarn to donate, that would be great!

LifeKids...where kids learn to live their faith for life!
This is our program for children in grades kindergarten through grade 5. Using curriculum materials approved by the Archdiocese, our volunteer catechists assist parents in teaching children that being a faithful Catholic is all about how we live our lives on a day to day basis. It is not just about learning prayers and doctrines, but a whole way of life. These classes meet in the education wing which is in the east side of the building.
EDGE is the name for our very creative program for
youth in Grades 6 thru 8. It involves formation into a holistic understanding of what it means to live in the world as a Catholic Christian. It goes way beyond the mere teaching of doctrines. EDGE meets in the Youth building.
Life Teen is our program for the teenagers in
Grades 9-12. It is a Total Youth Ministry process focused around the celebration of the Eucharist and dedicated to enriching the lives of our teens by recognizing their vital contribution to the church today. We have a wide variety of special activities which include many opportunities to learn, serve, pray and have fun together! Participation is mandatory for those on their way to being confirmed. Life Teen meets in the Youth building. Religious education classes are an important part of the preparation for the sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Eucharist or Confirmation.
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24
Life Night Resumes 7pm – 9pm All 6th – 12th graders are invited to come. A social time for teeens to get together, meet each other, play games, and have fun! Food/Snacks provided. FREE tutoring is available for all subjects.
Saturday, August 27th
11:00 am – 4:30 pm This day is for those youth who began our two-year preparation for Confirmation classes last year. Since Confirmation is held here every other year, new candidates will not begin the program until the Fall of 2017 in preparation for reception in the summer of 2019. They should, however, enroll now and plan to participate in our Life Teen program.
