OVERVIEW 21c Museum Hotels is reimagining the historic Gray & Dudley Building on 2nd Avenue in downtown Nashville into a public contemporary art museum, hotel, restaurant and bar. 21c Nashville brings 10,500 square feet of exhibition, meeting and event space to downtown Nashville. A multi-venue museum, each 21c property features contemporary art exhibition space open free of charge to the public, combined with a boutique hotel and chef-driven restaurant. 21c presents a range of arts programming curated by Museum Director and Chief Curator, Alice Gray Stites, including solo and group exhibitions that reflect the global nature of art today, as well as site-specific, commissioned installations, and a variety of cultural events. The organization collaborates on arts initiatives with artists and organizations worldwide, including North Carolina Museum of Art; MASS MoCA; Contemporary Art Museum Houston; The Barnes Foundation; Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati; Creative Capital Foundation; and others.

GRAY & DUDLEY BUILDING HISTORY

21c Nashville is housed in the historic Gray & Dudley Building on 2nd Avenue North in the heart of downtown Nashville. The 1900s era building served as a wholesale hardware warehouse and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

21c NASHVILLE DESIGN

The design team of 21c Museum Hotel Nashville, led by New York-based architects Deborah Berke Partners with Perfido Weiskopf Wagstaff + Goettel, integrated contemporary materials into the historic Gray & Dudley warehouse. The finishes and material palette celebrate the vibrant culture of music and arts in Nashville through the use of rich, deep and luxurious colors and highly textured and patterned materials and bespoke details.

The 1900 Chicago-style building features large arched windows on 2nd and 3rd Avenues, an articulated masonry façade with terra cotta detailing and an expressed cornice at the roofline.

Visitors and guests are welcomed to 21c Nashville via 2nd Avenue into a double height lobby with historic cast-iron columns and gallery and gift shop spaces overlooking the large, double-height Main Gallery in the lower level. Contemporary art is integrated throughout the entire property, creating unique experience at every turn. The restaurant and bar features a rich color palette offset with blackened metal and zinc accents, guests are welcomed into the restaurant via both Banker’s Alley and the hotel lobby.

The second level contains additional gallery and meeting spaces and a boardroom. The property’s 124 guestrooms are found on levels two through eight. Three large, interior lightwells offer natural light to interior guestrooms. The rooftop level, a new addition to the building, includes the 21c Suite and several additional suites, each with outdoor terraces with expansive skyline views of downtown Nashville, the Cumberland River and the Gateway Bridge.


ABOUT 21c MUSEUM HOTELS

21c was founded by Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson, contemporary art collectors and preservationists who have a passionate belief in the power of innovative and thought-provoking art to transform communities. With the goal of engaging the public with art in a new way, they converted vacant buildings into an interactive museum, a boutique hotel, and a world-class restaurant. While the development was not typical of the traditional hotel or museum, the approach was focused and deliberate, and grounded in the belief that art could drive commerce.

The fourth 21c opened in March 2015 in Durham, North Carolina and was voted top 10 Best New Hotels in USA Today 10Best Reader’s Choice Awards. The fifth 21c in Lexington, Kentucky opened in February 2016, and the sixth in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in June 2016.

With strong local partners who share the belief that art can be an economic driver for a community, 21c continues to expand to new markets. In addition to Nashville, 21c has developments underway in Kansas City, Missouri and Indianapolis, Indiana.
