in-frame application guide

The concept of the in-frame kitchen door

system is simple;

• take a standard modular carcase, apply a

36mm wide frame to the front of it.

• fix the door directly to the carcase with

adjustable concealed cranked arm hinges, so

the door fits within the frame.

This guide covers the assembly and

construction requirements, setting out all the

key components and accessories to show the

many combinations of cabinet fascias which

can be achieved.

Note: Appliance heights vary, oven trimmers/fillers mayneed to increase or decrease in size. It is advisable tocheck door sizes available before ordering appliances.

Note: These doors are not representative of the design of any of the in-frame doors.

in-frame system

The in-frame concept uses a system of pre-fabricated frames on every kitchen unit. Inmost cases the frame is fixed to the face ofthe unit, with the door and drawer front(s)inset within the frame's aperture(s). Theremay be occasions when a combination doorset is required, which allows the frame toopen with the door.

The frames are designed for use onconvential 18mm thick MFC cabinets.

The frame is oversized by 18mm so that thetop of the bottom rail sits flush with the baseof the cabinet. This gives easy access to thecabinet for cleaning and allows certainaccessories to be fitted.

In-frame door/drawer sets are available tosuit all commonly used kitchen unit sizes andfunctions. This is demonstrated on the A3pull-out kitchen facia matrix at the front ofthis guide.

frame attachment

Frame attachmentFrames are attached to the cabinet usingpressed steel brackets, roundhead andeuro screws. These are included in thefittings pack supplied with every in-frame door/drawer set. You can alsopurchase a fittings pack or individualcomponents separately (refer to section9 of the directory).

Some larger frames are supplied unassembled with cam and dowel fixings.

The frames are pre-drilled to suit euroscrews (ESP5X11). Screw the brackets(IFDFB1) onto the frame. Place the frameover the face of the unit. Align the outsideedges of the frame with the unit. The framehas been designed so the top edge of thebottom rail sits flush with the base of the cabinet.Fix using roundhead screws (6x12).

Open unitsWhen fixing frames to an open unit, dowel-fixmay be the preferred method to avoid visablebrackets. Open unit frames are pre-drilled tosuit both steel brackets and 8mm diameterdowels (DW4). Note: dowels are not suppliedin fittings pack.

The frame is designed so the 60mm drilling is atthe top and the 134mm is at the bottom.

Note: Ensure the cabinets are made exact tothe size required and are perfectly square.

If preferred, butt hinges (BHSS) and ball catches (IFDBC)can be used (refer to section 9, directory). Spaces needto be routered or chiseled out of the door and frame toaccommodate the butt hinges. Packers are required forthe ball catch to be mounted on

DoorstopsInset doors require buffer brackets (IFDS1) and buffers(3203). We recommend using two brackets per door, fixedusing two 6X12 roundhead screws per bracket.

Salice Smoves (D005SNG) can also be used as a doorstop. They should be mounted to the side of the cabinetusing an extra deep mounting bracket (D045XXG) and adie-cast Smove bracket (D076SN9). Fasten Smove to thecabinet side opposite the hinges. For doors over 1600mmhigh it may be necessary to use two Smoves, one on theupper part and the other to the lower part of the cabinetside opposite the hinges. For full details on Salice Smoveplease refer to section 9 of the directory.

Dovetail drawer boxes

Dovetail solid wood drawer boxes are available in a range of widths to suit the in-frame system (see section5 of the directory). The widths are 36mm less than boxes for lay-on drawer fronts. Mount the drawer runners(IDR270/IDR450) on 25mm spacers (supplied with the drawer boxes) to clear the width of the frame at each side.Use countersunk screws (C6X11/2) to fix spacers to cabinet, the spacers will sit flush with the front edge of thecabinet. Euroscrews (ESP5X11) can be used to fix the runners to spacers, forth hole on runner to first hole onspacer (see drawing below). When fitting the runner to the drawer box please refer to the instructions suppliedwith the runners.

in-frame combination doors & trimmers

Combination doors

Combination doors are one piece components, giving the impression of a frame with inset door.

Combination doors are used with appliances. They maintain an appearance that is consistentwith the fixed frame system whilst providing fullaccess to the appliance in the unit behind. Thedoor and frame open as one.

Doors with this construction are hung in theusual way, with straight arm hinges and mountingplates, or by using the fixings supplied with theappliance.

This group of special-sized combination doorssuit the range of built-in oven, microwave, fridge, freezer and dishwasher situations as thesetting out guide shows on page 3. Combinationdoors are used together with various fascias andtrimmers to make up full height units accordingto different appliance requirements.

TrimmersTrimmers are small facia components which areused to make up complete fascia arrangementson full height oven and integrated appliance units.

Their 3 piece construction, matching finish and detail co-ordinate their appearance with the doors.

Trimmers come in 2 sizes:- 135x600mm, for use as a fixed fascia element,e.g. on an oven unit, above or below in-framedoor/drawer sets, or to close down an aperture tothe required size.- 135x597mm, for use as an opening fasciaelement, dowelled or plated to a combination doorin order to complete a larger appliance aperture.

Once the trimmer has been cut down to the sizerequired it can be finished with:

For oak finish - worktop oilFor ivory finish - colour match paintFor sage green - colour match paintFor walnut finish - edging tape

Glazed decor end panelsGlazed decor end panels are also available in the Vanbrugh range, in wall, tall wall and dresser sizes.Glazed decor end panels are 18mm thicker than standard decor end panels, as they need to replace the end gableof the cabinet. The door frame sits in the notch and is fixed directly to the end panel.

We recommend the use of decor end panels or standard end panels to conceal the 18mm over sizing of the frame.

Decor end panelsA range of decor end panels are available to complement the in-frame ranges, for use as a decorative feature at theend of a run of units.

Corner solutionsCorner unit solutions available with the standard door system can also be adapted to work with an in-framedoor range.

Corner postsTraditional overlap corner arrangements are suitable for the in-frame kitchen system. Make them up on baseand wall units using 738mm high frames and corner posts. Corner posts are required to allow the door to openfully without the handle hitting the adjacent door.

Corner posts are suppliedin two pieces, each profiledon one long and two shortedges. The 70mm width canbe trimmed down to suit.

Corner door setCorner door sets are available with the in-frame range, which include one base corner door set (738mm) and twowall corner door sets (738mm & 918mm).

Note: The frame comes in two pieces which are joined together on site using cam and dowels.

29

standard accessories for use with in-frame

AccessoriesMany of the accessories for standard modular kitchens can also be used with the in-frame system. The fittingof some products will require modification, usually if they are side mounted, in which case packers should beused (to avoid any of the product clashing with the door frame). Some products require a wider door(compared to what is generally used on a standard door system). For those products that are not suitable foruse with in-frame doors where the frame is attached to the cabinet, a combination door can be used.

Suggested accessories for use with in-frame (which do not require a combination door)

• Carousels (see page 30)

• Magic corner (see page 30)

• Twister (see page 30)

• Base turnmotion (see page 31)

• Le Mans (see page 31)

• Pull-out larders (see page 32)

• Wall tandem pull-out (see page 32)

• 500mm wide pull-out wire drawers and baskets (refer to section 4 of the directory)

Wall tandem pull-outThe 300mm wall tandem pull-out can be used with in-frame butmust be used with a 400mm wide door (see section 4 of thedirectory). Also a 20mm packer needs to be applied betweenthe top runner and the top of the cabinet. The back panel mustbe reduced by 20mm and the drillings on the door must bedropped down by 20mm.

LardersPull-out larders can be used with the in-frame system. The 400mm larder works with a 500mm in-framelarder door. For a 300mm in-frame larder door a special 300mm full extension larder is available, whichcomes with 200mm wide baskets (see section 4 of the directory).

To prevent the top runner hitting the frame an 18mm packer (on an 18mm cabinet) should be used.

33

Top Tips

• The frame is designed to fit the overall width of your cabinets. It is therefore important that cabinets are made exact to size, as a build up of oversize tolerances may cause problems.

• Please note all frames are oversized by 18mm. Ensure top edge of bottom rail sits flush with top of bottom panel in cabinet.

• Frames over 1000mm are supplied in pieces with cam and dowel fixings. To ensure correct alignment of joint we recommend that these are assembled using a manual screw driver and not a powered one.

• When fixing drawer fronts to Nova drawer sides, turn adjusting screw to lowest level, rest drawer front onto intermediate rail, insert marker pins into Nova drawer sides, push drawer front onto pins to mark fixing position, fix clips, clip drawer front on and adjust to suit. For a drawer pack, start at the bottom and work your way up.

• When fixing drawer fronts to dovetail drawers, in addition to the drawer clip screw fixing we also recommend additional screw fixing through the upper part of the drawer box into the drawer front. Alternatively use longer fixing bolts on the handle that will pass through the drawer box and drawer front.

• Curved plinths must always be fitted prior to fixing door frame.

• When fitting lighting pelmet, due to tolerances with curved products, we recommend that it is set 2mm back from the front edge of the cabinets.

• Combination doors are used with integrated appliances and various internal storage solutions. These are fixed using standard overlay hinges.

• When dishwashers are fitted, the plinth will need to be notched to allow the door to open fully. Please check appliance manufacturing details before ordering. In some instancesthe door may also require a chamfer on the back bottom edge to clear the appliance unit.

• When trimmers are cut to size we recommend that the cut edge is refinished. For the Oak, Danish oil could be used, for the Ivory and Sage you could either paint it with a colour match or use edging tape, and for Walnut you can use edging tape.

• Due to the large size of the cornice a mitre cut cannot be made using a flip saw.
