exercise, eating, and smoking contribute to these outcomes but so do other factors like the economy, community safety, and education. We clearly have more work to do to make our county a healthier place. Our 6th Annual Health Policy Summit. On November 14, we co-‐hosted our 6th Annual Health Policy Summit, this time at the Fountains Conference Center – Four Points Sheraton. This year’s event was titled “The Changing Healthcare Landscape: Implications for Community, School, Business, & Providers.” The keynote speakers addressed the less well-‐known aspects of the Affordable Care Act. They described how these provisions are intended to improve access to and quality of healthcare while controlling healthcare spending in the United States. Our 3rd year for the Get Up & Go! Cup. The GUG Cup is an ongoing tabulation of race results from various area competitive athletic events. The awards were presented at the Get Up Go! Biathlon in August. Funding Matters. Through our new Garden Grants project, we awarded grants to local community and civic groups. We had 15 applicants and awarded a total of $5,000 to eight different community groups.

Beginning in April 2014, I held the office of President of Get Up & Go! What a privilege to serve during this amazing year for our organization. Here are some highlights from 2014: Improving the Built Environment. Get Up & Go! convened the Complete Streets Leadership Team for the last three years. We hosted our first “Walk, Run, Bike – St. Clair County” in July at the O’Fallon Public Safety Building. This program was an opportunity to formally discuss mutual concerns and progress towards improving roads, sidewalks, and trails for all users in St. Clair County. Seven communities made significant policy changes showing commitment to safety and accessibility for walkers and bicyclists. Get Up & Go! Designation. We designated the Ogles Neighborhood in Belleville as a Get Up & Go! neighborhood. Holding Our Own in the University of Wisconsin Health Rankings. The St. Clair County Health Department received funding for the We Choose Health grant in 2012 to develop a four-‐year community health plan. It focused on three strategic areas for St. Clair County:
• Healthy & safe schools • Active & pedestrian-‐
friendly streets • Tobacco-‐free multi-‐
unit public housing
The leadership and support for We Choose Health was provided by staff and volunteers from the St. Clair County Health Department, Get

Up & Go!, McKendree University, HeartLands Conservancy, the YMCA of Southwest Illinois, and the East Side Health District.
Unfortunately, in Spring of 2014, Congress declared that funds for We Choose Health would not be available after September 2014. While disappointing, it hasn’t deterred our commitment to a shared vision for health that began in 2009. In fact, it has increased our desire and determination to work together so that we can sustain many of the activities initiated through We Choose Health.
Advocacy and Leadership Get Up & Go! just couldn’t do it without our partners! Here are some of them: Belleville News Democrat Belleville Running Club Chiro-‐Med City of Belleville Get Up & Go! We’re grateful for the support provided by We Choose Health and the opportunity for the St. Clair County Health Department, the IDPH and the CDC to make an impact on the health of our communities. Over the last two years, these strategic areas have served as pivot points for helping St. Clair County realize a shared Vision for Health by the Year 2020.

Over 100 civic leaders, health professionals and educators gathered at the Fountains Conference Center at Four Points Sheraton in Fairview Heights on Nov. 14. The theme was “The Affordable Care Act: Implications & Impact on Healthcare Today & Tomorrow.” Keynote speakers Ms. Katie Adamson (Director of Health Partnerships and Policy for the YMCA of the U.S.A.) and Ms. Linda Baker (professor

at the Paul Simon Institute) talked about changes in the health care system. This year’s theme focused on the changes in the healthcare system and how they affect schools, communities, and health professions. “There have been some serious changes in our health care delivery system under the Affordable Care Act (ACA),” Ms. Baker said. She added that she expects more changes to the ACA in the future. Ms.

Adamson said good nutrition, exercise and prevention should be part of a health care system. “What we have to look at is how to transform a “sick” health care system to a real, true health care system,” she said. “We need to take people who are pre-‐disability

and provide them with training that involves individual behavioral change.” Get Up & Go! has co-‐sponsored the Health Policy Summit with other partners for the last six years as part of a shared vision of health.
