Tides

The gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun creates tides on the Earth.

High Tides

• During 24 hours period, two high tides occur.• High tides occur when the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon

are in a line with one another. • Each side of the earth that is in line with the sun and

moon experiences this type of tide.

Low Tides

• As earth rotates, the tides move around the Earth alternating between high and low tides approximately every 6 hours.

• In a 24 hour time period, two low tides occur. • Low tides occur on each side of the earth when the

gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun are perpendicular to one another.

• Tidal range is the vertical distance in the height of the water between high and low tides.

• Ranges vary worldwide, from less than 30 cm (1 ft) in some places to over 15 meters (50 ft).

Spring Tides • Spring tides are especially

strong tides and have the greatest tidal range.

• Spring tides occur every two weeks when the earth, moon, and sun are in alignment.

• These greater than average tidal ranges occur twice a month, during new and full moons, and are called spring tides.

Neap Tides• Neap tides are especially

weak tides and have the smallest tidal range.

• When the moon is at a right angle to the sun and earth, the moon’s gravitational pull is at right angles to the sun’s lesser gravitational pull.

• Neap tides occur twice a month, during the first and third quarter moons.
