SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 28, 2019
My Dear Parishioners,
Praised Be Jesus Christ! On behalf of our parish family, I thank Fr. Francis for his brief visit with us last weekend from Peru. It was a joy to have another priest here with me, to hear his witness and share his
company. Next weekend, we will have the Mission Cooperave Plan Collecon (it’s a yellow envelope) and these monies will be forwarded to the Propagaon of the Faith for Fr. Francis’ good work. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
Last weekend, in addion to meeng Fr. Francis, we met again the person of Martha in Sacred Scripture. The one who complained to the Lord and went to Him quickly with her complaint. This week, as we come to the end of July and begin a new month, we celebrate her feast day. That’s right! “Busy Martha” became St. Martha and I believe her witness offers a powerful lesson for all of us today. There’s something so real about Martha, so refreshing, honest and just. She’s a person who turned to the Lord Jesus not only with her prayers and piety, but with her complaints and anxiees. Whatever it was, she gave it to the Lord. Indeed, she turned to him with the whole of her life and in that turning, in that going quickly to the Lord, she found something that all of us are meant to find. She found the gi of Chrisan Faith.
Today, Chrisan faith is receiving a terrible bum rap. Chrisans are enduring ever greater pressures, prejudices and even hatreds for being believers. They remain the number #1 target of religious violence and persecuon across the globe. There are more Chrisan martyrs now than in the days of Nero and Dioclean! In our part of the world, the persecuon ranges from being thought of as a “hater” to being accused of being one for simply believing and living what the Church teaches. Years ago, Karl Marx called faith the opium of the masses and it seems that that descripve has been inhaled, smoked and fully accepted by many today. His thought on faith as a drug has infected many a person, not to menon what it has done on our whole society. Sociologist Chrisan Smith has wrien beaufully about this over the years and has idenfied not only the root of this confusion, but the soluon. He calls the type of faith that people believe today Moralisc Therapeuc Deism (MTD). While not a “faith” per se, it describes what many person would consider their faith today. Five characteriscs of MTP. They are as follow.
1. A God exists who created and ordered the world and watches over human life on earth.
2. God wants people to be good, nice, and fair to each other, as taught in the Bible and by most world religions.
3. The central goal of life is to be happy and to feel good about oneself.
4. God does not need to be parcularly involved in one's life except when God is needed to resolve a problem.
5. Good people go to heaven when they die.
At first such faith sounds good, but noce well, it is devoid of revelaon, history and substance.
I write of this today as we get ready to celebrate St. Martha and as we prepare to enter August. This is the month that many of us or our loved ones will return to school and engage the rigors of learning. School can be a place of great learning and maturing or it can be just the opposite especially when it comes to faith. Many a person lost their faith on the college campus and for many it’s never been found. And so, I encourage all in the next weeks to engage the faith. Opportunies abound for this and in the coming weeks they will be adversed. But for this week, make the commitment, take the me and culvate the desire to engage FAITH. For all of this, let’s pray to St. Martha. May she who was commied to finding and turning to Jesus throughout her life, help us to do the same. For in finding Him, we find ourselves, we find our peace, we find everything.
Peace,
Fr. Rogers 236

DID YOU KNOW? The applicaon process to be accepted into the Deaconate program is very comprehensive and intense. When Jim Ellio made his applicaon to the program, he was given psychological and aptude examinaons and was inter-viewed by a number of the program leaders. Despite his acvies in the parish he was not accepted into the program. It was suggested that he work with a spiritual director, begin praying the Liturgy of the Hours and do more religious reading. He was told that his applicaon would be reconsidered in one year if he fulfilled these requirements and was sll interested. Because of his sincere desire to serve as a deacon Jim began to work with a spiritual director and intensified his prayer life. The archdiocese did, in fact, contact him aer one year as promised. He then went through another set of interviews and was accepted into the formaon program. The first year is a kind of probaonary year (Aspirancy), aer which the candi-dates are formally admied into the program.
