Welcome to Westminster

Whether you are worshiping at Westminster for the first time or returning for a visit, we sincerely welcome you in the name of Christ!

Following our 10:00 a.m. worship service, we invite you to meet today’s “ambassador,” Bill Nace, at the back of the sanctuary. He will have a gift for you, and can share information regarding our many ministries for children, youth and adults. He can also guide you to the hospitality area to enjoy fellowship or lead you on a tour of the church.

Children are welcome in worship! Westminster’s Kids’ Notes and worship bags are available each Sunday from the ushers. Kids’ Notes, a weekly companion to Westminster’s morning worship, emphasizes listening and seeing during worship. The bags include storybooks for children of all ages, coloring paper and crayons, a children’s bulletin for those age three to six, and bookmarks for hymns and Scripture.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. In a broken and fearful world, the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior,to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasksand to live holy and joyful lives. The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God in loving memory of our parents from Art and Barbara Gorman.

The flowers in the narthex are from yesterday’s memorial service for Forrest Guth.

Sanctuary Flowers - Consider giving the sanctuary flowers for Sunday worship. Your gift of God’s natural beauty to remember or honor loved ones, or to celebrate an event, expresses praise and thanksgiving to God. Please contact Linda Watson during business hours at 302-571-6719 or [email protected]. Available dates for flowers are August 23 and September 6 and 27.

Are you wearing a nametag? Whether you are a longtime member or new to the church, wearing a nametag allows others the opportunity to meet you, greet you by name, and become more familiar with others at church. Nametags and markers are in baskets at all entrances. Extend hospitality, kindness and friendship by wearing a nametag every Sunday.

“Westminster to Go” Audio tapes and DVD’s of recent Westminster worship services are available. Please use the sign-out sheet when you borrow them from the front desk. Printed sermons are available on the literature tables the following week and on our website at www.wpc.org.

Our Month of Musical Masterworks continues at the 10 o’clock service this morning with a dazzling horn concerto by the grand German late-Romantic, Richard Strauss. Many thanks to Liz Pfaffle for sharing this great music with us today. The next two Sundays bring two more unique works you won’t want to miss:

August 23Heitor Villa-Lobos: Guitar Concerto

Glenn Lyons, guitar

August 30Johannes Brahms: Double Concerto for Violin & Cello

Timothy Schwarz, violinLawrence Stomberg, cello

Gifts donated in memory of Rev. Chad Miller will be used to support Westminster Youth Mission Trips. Shortly before his death, Chad wrote, “Mission trips not only change us, they also have the potential to change the world. When we come home we know that we are accountable for what we have learned and cannot leave things the way they are.” Please make contributions payable to Westminster Presbyterian Church and indicate “in Rev. Miller’s memory” on the memo line.

IN MEMORIAM

10

It’s not too late too express your sympathy and concern to the Miller family. Recently they expressed their gratitude for continuing to receive kind notes from Westminster members regarding the deaths of Chad and Chris. To express your personal sympathy or to share a memory, you may write:

Their parents: Mr. and Mrs. Paul (Ellie) Miller, 1210 N. Division Street, Creston, IA 50801Their sister and brother-in-law: Amy and Wes Clark, 1038 Minnow Avenue, Afton, IA 50830Chris’ wife: Mrs. Nicole Miller, 114 First Street, Yonkers, NY 10704

11

We are delighted to have The Reverend Jill Getty on an interim basis as our Pastoral Care Assistant. With Westminster’s loss of Rev. Chad Miller, the Personnel Committee and session have been pursuing ways to fill in the gaps in staffing created by Chad’s death. Jill will work one day a week visiting members who are hospitalized as well as homebound members in declining health.

Please remember in your prayers:

Those recently hospitalized include Virginia Reichert, Barbara Ross and Helen Thompson.

Westminster’s homebound family who can no longer attend worship with us. Send a card, say a prayer, visit! This week we ask you to remember Mrs. Virginia Mentzer #309 and Mrs. Anne Burrough #308, Gilpin Hall, 1101 Gilpin Ave., Wilmington, DE 19806.

The families of Florence Herr and Forrest Guth on their recent deaths.

Our brothers and sisters in worldwide ministry (see back page).

Westminster’s Covenant Prayer Group is committed to praying weekly for specific needs of the faith community. Anyone with prayer requests may leave a confidential message on 302-654-5848, ext. 335, or fill out a prayer request card (in the pew pocket) and place it in the offering plate.

A Centering Prayer time occurs every Thursday at noon in the Ruth Christie Room. Anyone is welcome to participate. Basically, those who come spend thirty minutes in silence. Silence allows us time and space to empty our minds, quiet our brains’ chatter, and be still and attentive to God.

If you find your heart is heavy as you worship this morning – a Stephen Minister is available to meet with you following both services and to offer compassionate support. If you go to the piano at the conclusion of either service, someone with a Stephen Minister nametag will be there to speak with you, and if desired, pray with you.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan often seem far away, and we may neglect to realize that Americans, as well as Iraqis, Afghans, and members of coalition forces, continue to die each day. As Christians, we are called to pray for the spreading of peace and justice and an end to violence. If someone in your family is serving in these wars, we ask that you let us know so that we may include that person on our prayer list. (Contact Suzie Hurlock: 302-654-5214 ext. 131, or [email protected]).

This week we pray for: Those known to the Westminster community presently serving in the Middle East:

Afghanistan: Neal Moody, Andy Stoffer and Daniel ReinsenbergerIraq: Ken Bachman and Beau Biden

12

The Church Offices are closed Fridays through September 4th. If you wish to contact a pastor during an emergency, please use the home number in our church directory. Also, this Tuesday, August 18, the staff will be on a retreat and the offices closed.

The deadline for the Sunday bulletin and the “Westminster Weekly Word” is Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. Send announcements and articles for either of the publications to [email protected].

Gardeners Needed Each year a dedicated group of Westminster members helps care for the Memorial Garden by weeding and

pruning the plants.  Volunteers are asked to work a few hours in a designated two-week period.  If you can help sometime this summer, please call Ellie Furry at 239-4937 or e-mail [email protected].

More Weeders Needed! The Weekly Weeders gather every Thursday at 8:30 a.m. to tackle weeds in Westminster borders and beds. Bring a bucket (we will have extras), a digger, clippers, gloves and water to drink. Invite your friends and meet at the 13th street entrance where we will determine the day’s target, or look for us on the WPC grounds. Plan to work for roughly one hour. Call Kris Qualls 652-7272 if you have questions or suggestions. We are making great progress!

Stephen Minister Meeting - Thursday, August 20, 2009; 5:30 p.m. Supervision Groups 1, 2, 3; 7:00 p.m. Devotions and Supper or Snacks (bring your own); St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church; Contact Person: Pam Bailey, 484-508-8186.

WHOLENESS IN BODY AND SPIRIT

HealthySteps is an exercise program to improve mobility and quality of life for cancer survivors and those with chronic immune disorders. There will be a free, introductory class on September 11, from 9-10:00 a.m., at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Naamans Road in Wilmington.  The class will regularly meet on Friday mornings.  Please call the instructor, Joy Mulholland, at 397-1134 for class details.  See www.gohealthysteps.com for information on the program.

Thursday evening yoga continues through the summer, with one exception: no yoga on Sept. 3. Saturday morning yoga will resume in a few weeks at 9:00 am. Look for additional information soon. Both of these sessions are led byprofessional instructors and are suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Please try one or both of them on for size!

Girl Talk Continues! Please plan to attend the women’s summer reading group on Wednesday at 7:00 pm at host Nancy Doyle’s home, 4912 Threadneedle Rd., Wilmington, 19807. If you’ve enjoyed the southern charm of Fannie Flagg or “The Secret Life of Bees,” you’ll find “The Help” a delight. Miss Eugenia Phelan (“Skeeter” to her friends) is a young woman of privilege who enjoys her fellow Junior Leaguers but sometimes finds their ways at odds with her own principles. She plays the part of her station in 1960’s Mississippi but can’t help feeling dissatisfied with keeping house and acting as recording secretary at league meetings, and yeans for something more.

NEWS TO NOTE

ADULT EDUCATION AND SMALL GROUPS

If you are interested in joining Westminster Church or learning more about membership, please plan to attend the New Member Class on Sunday, September 13th, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. in Classroom 5, downstairs across from Community Hall.

A new 12-week Grief Support group, Living Through Loss, will be offered this fall on Sunday evenings from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. Dr. Ledbetter will lead this education and grief support group Sunday evenings September 20 – December 6, and enrollment is limited to 10 people. Cost is $30 for materials. Please contact Anne directly (654-5214, ext. 124) if you are interested in registering for this group.

CONGREGATIONAL FELLOWSHIP

Please join the Parents of Little Ones (POLO) group today at 2:00 pm for a fun afternoon at Graylyn Crest Swim Club (2002 Marsh Rd.). There is a baby pool for the little ones, and the bigger kids will (probably) love the 3-meter high dive. Cost is $2.00 per person, which can be paid that day. Please RSVP to Karen Dietz at [email protected] or (302) 656-0343 and plan on bringing drinks and snacks to share.

Ice Cream Social - Sunday, August 23. Please join Westminster’s Deacons for our annual Ice Cream Social in Community Hall. There will be three kinds of ice cream and a variety of toppings, too. Contact: Sally Bittel Thomas (302)743.6923.

14

Blessing of the Backpacks – Sunday, August 23, will be a special day in the life of Westminster. Please plan to join us during the 10:00 am worship service for our BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS! If you are a student, be sure to bring your backpack to church – everyone else, be sure to join us as we launch our children and youth into the upcoming school year with God’s abundant blessings and the love and support of our church family. We also will present the filled backpacks we have gathered to the principal of Shortlidge Academy Elementary School, who will distribute them to students when they return in September. If you haven’t made your donation yet, it’s not too late! Thanks so much for your support.

Congo Cookout Welcoming Rev. Kabasele. Please join us for a casual potluck dinner today at 4:00 pm at the home of Brud and Liz Bacon. There will be a short talk by Rev. Kabasele regarding the current state of affairs in the Congo. RSVP to Liz Bacon at (302) 658-8419 or [email protected].

Westminster goes to the Food Bank of Delaware. Join us on Tuesday to help at the Food Bank, preparing lunches for low income children (in July, we helped pack 1200 lunches) and sorting crates of donated food. We will meet in the Westminster parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and carpool to the FB, and work 2-3 hours. Please wear sneakers, and old clothes as you will really be doing what Christ commanded us to do when he said “feed the hungry.” Anyone from age 11-101 is welcome to come. Please contact Camilla Jones at (302) 421-9249 or [email protected]. WE NEED YOU!

Friendship House Clothing Bank - As a result of the economy, the Clothing Bank is experiencing fewer donations and a higher level of needs for back to school clothing for families with young children. If you have items you can donate, please bring them to Community Hall on Sunday, August 23. Thank you in advance for your kindness. Direct any questions to John Doyle at 636-9061.

Computer Mentors Needed! The second basic computer class for the residents in Burton House and Daughtry House will begin in early September. At the conclusion of last spring’s class, the volunteer mentors critiqued the results and made some basic changes. These revisions include: lengthening sessions to 1 ½ hrs, and clearly explaining the course content to the potential students so they understand the commitment and class expectations, including homework assignments. The course consists of 7-8 weekly evening sessions at Daughtry House to “cross the digital divide.” We need two more male or female computer mentors. There will be more residents coming through Friendship House’s transitional housing program all the time. The teaching plan covers computer basics, the Internet, e-mail, Microsoft Word and Excel, and keyboarding. It’s directed to computer literacy, online job applications, writing résumé’s and enhancing employability. Interested? Call Jim Clark at 996-0406 for more information.

It Really Isn’t Finished Yet. Join your fellow Westminster members in New Orleans for a week of fulfilling work and fellowship. We will be hosted again by St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church through their RHINO projects. Accommodations are a bit more posh than past trips, as participants will be staying at Brent House, a residence hotel. Act now – only two chances left! The first trip will be on November 16-22 and second March 1-8, 2010. Contact Liz Bacon at (302) 658-8419 or [email protected] to reserve your spot.

Mission Fair in Honor of ChadWe all know that our Chad Miller had a passion for mission. In recognition of his strong support of mission, the Joint Mission Committee is hosting a Mission Fair. The Fair will be held on Sunday, September 20 th and Sunday, September 27th in Community Hall. All members are invited to attend and learn about the mission efforts Chad was so passionate about. We also hope that in his honor each member will give of their time to one (or more) of these efforts. So please come and honor Chad by learning about our many different mission efforts and how you can help. Groups wishing to participate should contact Sue Weissinger at [email protected] or (302) 652-5910 or Sue Linderman at [email protected] or (302) 239-7650.

BACKPACK PROJECT

This year, Westminster’s Urban Mission and Membership and Evangelism Committees are teaming up with a local school to help students in need gear up for the start of their academic year. We have purchased 200 backpacks that will be donated to neighboring Shortlidge Academy. The school has provided a list of supplies most needed by students and it is our challenge to fill the 200 backpacks by August 23 rd. To make this happen, we need your support!

You may also write a message of encouragement to these K-5th grade students on a WPC postcard. Your message will be included in the backpacks upon delivery. Postcards are available for your use at the reception desk.

16

Contact Sue Linderman (239-7650), Karen Dietz (656-0343) or Elizabeth Langlois (529-0927) if you have any questions or would like to be part of the team filling the packs in mid-August. Thanks in advance for your support of this wonderful mission opportunity.

Chapel Club begins Tuesday, September 15and ends Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Our Closing Celebration is Tuesday, March 16

Early registration is very important for planning the year’s program. Participation in the program (September – March) is $110 per child. Scholarships are available in addition to payment plans. Please call Susan Moseley to discuss a plan that best fits your family.

Chapel Club registration forms are on the literature table in the main hallway.

Please return the form by mail or leave in the church office (attention: Jeanne Checkel) as soon as possible.
