ORDER OF WORSHIP

Preparation for Worship

The day demands that we begin in praise of you,

for the day is yours and we are yours;

we could not live the day without reference to you,

without your gifts,

without your commands.

Walter Brueggemann, Awed to Heaven, Rooted to Earth

Call to Worship

We have come to praise God, who has done wonderful things among us.

In Jesus, the Christ, God has shown us love,

giving light for our darkness and strength for all our days.

Sing praise to God’s name, offer yourself to God in prayer, open your heart to God’s saving word.

We have come to worship God and be strengthened and renewed as disciples of Jesus.

*Hymn No. 430“Come Sing, O Church, in Joy!”Darwall’s 148th

Call to Confession

God calls each of us.

But we are often reluctant to heed the call.

Prayer of Confession

Almighty God, you have called us into your church to be your servants in the service of others. Forgive us for falling short of your call. We have loved ourselves more than you and our neighbor. We have been more concerned with budgets than with justice and peace. We have been more ready to talk about Christ than to live like Christ. Cut through our selfishness, increase our courage, renew our vision. Make us and the whole church more nearly what you would have us be; through Jesus Christ whose Body we are.

Silent Prayer

Assurance of God’s Forgiveness

God was in Christ reconciling the world.

In Christ Jesus we are forgiven and made new.

*Affirmation of Faith

We acknowledge one God alone,

whose demands on us are absolute,

whose help for us is sufficient.

That One is the Lord,

whom we worship, serve, and love.

In Christ God's Word of demand is lived out:

to love God and neighbor as Jesus did

is what God requires of us.

To worship God is highest joy.

To serve God is perfect freedom.A Declaration of Faith

Offering

During the offering, please sign your name and pass the red folders down each row.

As folders are returned to the center aisle, note the names of fellow worshippers on your pew.

Offertory Anthem

“I Call to You, O Lord”Eugene Butler

I call to you, O my Lord, my God. Make haste to me. Give ear, O Lord, to my voice when I call to you. Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting of my hands as an evening sacrifice. Deliver me, O Lord, from evil ones, incline my heart from any wicked deed, For my eyes are toward you; Lord, my God, in you I seek my refuge. May our sons in their youth be like plants full grown, Our daughters like corner pillars cut for the structure of a palace. Happy the people to whom such blessings fall; Happy the people whose Lord is God!

Welcome to Westminster

Whether you are worshiping at Westminster for the first time or returning for a visit,

we sincerely welcome you in the name of Christ!

· Following our worship service, we invite you to meet today’s “ambassador,” Anne Gunn, at the back of the sanctuary. She will have a gift for you, and can share information regarding our many ministries for children, youth and adults. She can also guide you to the hospitality area to enjoy fellowship or lead you on a tour of the church.

· Children are welcome in worship! Westminster’s Kids’ Notes and worship bags are available each Sunday from the ushers. Kids’ Notes, a weekly companion to Westminster’s morning worship, emphasizes listening and seeing during worship. The bags include storybooks for children of all ages, coloring paper and crayons, a children’s bulletin for those age three to six, and bookmarks for hymns and Scripture.

· The Lord’s Supper is celebrated the first Sunday of every month at both services.

· Worship Aids – You may obtain large print Presbyterian Hymnals and hearing devices from any usher.

· Would you like to know more? Check out our website at www.wpc.org

Worship Notes

The flowers in the sanctuary today are given to the glory of God in loving memory of Dick and Bob Geuder, Emily and Hanson Hodge from Sara Geuder.

Sanctuary Flowers - Consider giving the sanctuary flowers for Sunday worship. Your gift of God’s natural beauty to remember or honor loved ones, or to celebrate an event, expresses praise and thanksgiving to God. Please contact Linda Watson during business hours at 302-571-6719 or [email protected]. Available dates for flowers are February 14 and 21.

Are you wearing a nametag? Whether you are a longtime member or new to the church, wearing a nametag provides others the opportunity to meet you, greet you by name, and for you to become more familiar with others at church. Nametags and markers are in baskets at all major entrances. Extend hospitality and friendship by wearing a nametag every Sunday.

“Westminster to Go” Audio tapes and DVD’s of recent Westminster worship services are available. Please use the sign-out sheet when you borrow them from the front desk. Printed sermons are available on the literature tables the following week and on our website at www.wpc.org.

Congregational Care and Prayer

Please remember in your prayers:

· Those recently hospitalized: Amy Fedeler, Don Gerwig, Marjorie Snave.

· Westminster’s homebound family who can no longer attend worship with us. Send a card, say a prayer, visit! This week we ask you to remember Jean Fuller HC1012 and Jack Remsen HC3844, both of Methodist Country House, 4830 Kennett Pike, Wilmington, DE 19807.

· Our brothers and sisters in worldwide ministry (see back page.)

Westminster’s Covenant Prayer Group is committed to praying weekly for specific needs of the faith community. Anyone with prayer requests may leave a confidential message on 302-654-5848, ext. 335, or fill out a prayer request card (in the pew pocket) and place it in the offering plate.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan often seem far away, and we may neglect to realize that Americans, as well as Iraqis, Afghans and members of coalition forces, continue to die each day. As Christians, we are called to pray for the spreading of peace and justice and an end to violence. If someone in your family is serving in these wars, please let us know, so that we may include that person on our prayer list. Contact Colleen Falasco: 302-654-5214 ext. 131, or [email protected].

This week we pray for

· Those known to the WPC Community presently serving in the Middle East:

Afghanistan: Edward Maloney, Chris Martin, Neal Moody and Daniel Reinsenberger

· The families of those from the U.S. who have died most recently:

Staff Sergeant Anton Philips, age 31, of Inglewood, California, December 31

Staff Sergeant Matthew Ingham, age 20, of Altoona, Pennsylvania, January 11

Corporal Jamie Lowe, age 21, of Johnsonville, Illinois, January 11

Corporal Nicholas Uzenski, age 21, of Tomball, Texas, January 11

Staff Sergeant Daniel Merriweather, age 25, of Collierville, Tennessee, January 13

Private 1st Class Geoffrey Whitsitt, age 25, of Taylors, South Carolina, January 13

Westminster’s Men’s Fellowship Special Evening Event – next Sunday, January 31

Rob Prestowitz, Executive Director of Urban Promise, will visit Westminster to share the mission of the Wilmington Urban Promise School. The main focus of his presentation will be on their Intern program highlighting international students from Africa. Gathering will be at 5 p.m. in the Meeting Room next to the Chapel, followed by a light meal and presentation.  A $5 donation will cover the cost of food. Meeting is open to all men, women and youth. Seating is limited, so please signup with Susan Alexander at the front desk to reserve a space.  For more information, contact Bill Francis ([email protected]) or John Doyle ([email protected]).

‘Girl Talk’ Continues on January 27. Our Women’s Reading Group starts the new year with “People of the Book” by Geraldine Brooks (http://www.geraldinebrooks.com/people.html). Please come on Wednesday, January 27, at 7:30 p.m. in Ruth Christie to discuss this fascinating story.

Our Mission Emphasis for January is “Sharing Our Plenty”

Despite the recent snowfalls and the bitterly cold weather, we are only beginning the winter season and there are many in our community who need food and clothing. Please take the opportunity to bring non-perishable food and your extra clothing to Westminster so that we can share our plenty with others. “There is no one so blessed that she/he has no needs.  And you are never so empty or inadequate that you have no gift to give.” (Greg Jones, January 3, 2010)

Every Sunday in January is Food Sunday Because of the extreme weather and high unemployment,  the food closets that we support, Hanover Presbyterian and St. Stephens Lutheran, need our help. We ask that you think of every Sunday in January as the day you will bring items to church to help fill this great need. When you are shopping for yourself, could you please pick up any of these items: cereal, rice, pasta, beans, canned milk, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, tuna fish, vegetables, soups, drink mixes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, combs, diapers, paper towels. These items fly off the shelves at the food pantries! You will find collection boxes inside all doorways at church.

Clothing Drive - If you needed a reason to clean out closets and simplify, please gather up all your extra items and bring them to Westminster to help keep others warm and clothed. Greatly needed items are coats, sweaters, shoes, pants of all ages and sizes. Please give particular attention to cold weather clothes. Your donations will go to The Clothing Bank of Delaware.  You will find collection boxes near the receptionist's desk and in Community Hall. The last day of the Clothing Drive is next Sunday, January 31.

Dr. Sue Makin returns from Malawi. After many years of service in Malawi and Congo, Dr. Sue Makin has returned to the United States and will be with us on Sunday, February 7th.   We have planned a luncheon in her honor at 12:00 p.m.  Join us in honoring Dr. Makin’s years of life-saving service in Malawi and Congo. Call the church at 302-654-5214 to let us know if you are able to attend.

Blessing of the Backpacks Update - With the funds collected through the generous donations to this project, Westminster has made a financial contribution to Shortlidge Academy in support of their mentoring program (called MentorMe!). This program is designed to help students in grades 3 through 5 in the areas of reading, math and writing. Linda Thomas, principal of Shortlidge Academy, has expressed a great need for mentors for this program. Each mentoring session is 30 minutes long, and training is provided. If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please contact Sicily Bordrick at 302-651-2710, ext 202.
