Last Sunday, Gavin shared on the im-

portance of friendship in our church.

The two occasions that Jesus mentions

the word ‘church’, in Matthew 16 and

18, it is for the function of binding

what has already been bound in

heaven, and of loosing on earth what

is already loosed in heaven.

What struck me when reading those

two passages was the link between our

REVELATION of the Christ (Matthew

16 :13-20) and our RELATIONSHIPS in

Christ (Matthew 18:15-20). While it is

of absolute importance that we must

have and continue to have a super-

natural revelation of who Jesus is as

we grow into His likeness, that process

cannot happen in isolation; we are

saved into the church family where

conflict and misunderstanding must be

properly dealt with in a spirit of for-

giveness. God has forgiven us, so who

are we NOT to forgive others?

Gavin pointed out that ‘before we can

become an army, we must be a family’.

Matthew 18 bears this out; the binding

and loosing occurs once a relationship

breakdown has been dealt with. The

flow of unity that Jesus wants for us is

unlimited power in prayer, based on

agreement aligned with God’s purpose

and flow of anointing (in ‘my’ name).

Russ Bennett

Jesus calls us friends, not merely ser-

vants, because servants are task-

oriented and do not have the bigger

picture available to them (John 15:15).

All that the Father has, Jesus has made

known to us. Friends have the benefits

of insight into the person they are

serving. When we are friends with

God, we serve Him out of gratitude.

The fruit of transformation in our lives

comes from the fellowship of the Holy

Spirit and friendship with others. The

film ‘The King’s Speech’ is as a great

example of this, of the power of

friendship and encouragement. It’s

how a cold, business relationship can

be transformed into covenant friend-

ship that gets much better results.

In the film, the speech therapist insists

that the stammering king would only

be rid of his impediment if there was

total equality between them. It was

only as the king relaxed and began to

form a genuine connection with the

person helping him that change hap-

pened. Friendship is based on equality.

This is the gospel; that in love, Jesus

chose to appear in human form as our

‘equal’, in order that through His death

multitudes of people at enmity with

Him could become friends of God.

Friendship = Fruitfulness
