Note: A dragonfly motif lamp was one of thetwo earliest leaded glass lamps offered byLouis C. Tiffanys firm, making its debut withthe Nautilus desk lamp model, just priorto 1900. Although in general Tiffany did notcredit individual designers for their work, inthe case of the dragonfly model, the designis attributed to a female employee, ClaraDriscoll. Driscolls early design for a dragonfly

lamp was illustrated in a catalog for SiegfriedBings LArt Nouveau exhibition held at theGrafton Galleries, London in 1899. This firstDragonfly lamp was strikingly different fromTiffanys earlier blown glass oil lamps withtheir abstract flowing surface decoration. Here instead was a conical shade composedentirely of leaded glass, with its principalmotif taken directly from nature. A delicatemetal filigree was used to bring realism to theshimmering wings of each dragonfly. Laterversions of the shade used richly coloredmolded glass jewels throughout the shadeto heighten the three-dimensional effect of thedesign.
