Maggie’s Message
‘Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing,
but let us encourage one another.’
As I read my Sunday newspaper an article caught my attention entitled
‘Off to church today? Bet it’s nothing like THIS service.’ Apparently ‘Cool’
Christianity with DJ’s, dry ice and celebrities is on its way to Edinburgh.
It’s a rock ‘n’ roll church on a mission to make Christianity cool. With
tattooed pastors in ripped jeans, dry ice, chart topping hymns and more
than one million instagram followers. The Hillsong phenomenon is on
its way and could apparently transform the fortunes of Christianity north
of the Border.’ With its Sunday services, attracting more than 10,000
people each week in central London alone, it’s a bold claim.
Quite simply Christianity is being urged to move with the times to
become a more relevant experience for a younger generation of spiritual
seekers often disenfranchised with our long-standing traditions, hymns
and a liturgical language that is out of step with present culture.
The Reformation of the church is under way – mega churches attract in
their thousands those seeking a more authentic experience of worship
not dissimilar to a pop concert.
It’s a challenge for a rural church on the outskirts of Edinburgh where a
congregation meet in an ancient 12th century building, to faithfully
worship God as a family of all ages. For the many who have gone before
us have seen numerous changes take place in the style of worship from
old hymns to new, in lay out, in the introduction of a multi media system
– but clearly if this article is to be believed we are still a long way off
from offering a relevant and cool experience for spiritual seekers ‘out
there.’

In June, two of our senior boys Cameron Stein and Connor MacPhie
gained their Queens Badge.
This is the highest award in the Boy’s Brigade and is the culmination of
two years of hard work and training. They are pictured below with

There has been so much said in recent years about the various reasons
why people are leaving the church in their droves, but I want to
encourage you to think about why people stay with the church.
The church is still the best community in the world to belong to bar none.
We are not perfect because people are not perfect, and all of us are on a
journey of transformation each at different stages. From babies through
to old age the church provides a space to meet friends, build
relationships, use your gifts experience and knowledge to serve and help
one another.
The church builds community and serves the community. The church
enables us to experience the love of God and encourages us to love
others, we may not always be cutting edge but the depth of this faith
community is far-reaching and transformative.
We know in our individualistic and consumerist culture the church needs
to makes changes if it is to be relevant and reach the least the last and
the lost, and for many it is not changing quickly enough but in the wake
of recent events in our nation where terrorists strike and tower blocks are
consumed by fire leaving so many dead and injured – the church is at the
heart of things trying to help people with their grief and pain, offering
support being the presence of God in the midst of this carnage and fear.
We did not need to be cool we just needed to be there and demonstrate
in genuine ways that we care, and politicians and police alike have all
announce, ‘our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost
a loved one.’
Whether we offer a Glastonbury experience or the simplicity of quiet
meditation and Psalm singing, a family friendly service or messy church –
we are the community that are here for people living out our faith in the
midst and because God loves us and gathers us together to worship him
in Spirit and in Truth…….now I’m just off to the local tattoo parlour in my
old ripped jeans!!

the citizens in the countries under the harsh rule of that empire would
have wanted to do was pray for their ‘rulers’ but that is what the Apostle
Paul is saying in his letter to Timothy that we need to do, if we want to
“live peaceful and quiet lives….” .
Those in Government, whether at Westminster or Holyrood, are not
supermen or superwomen. They are human beings just like us with
weaknesses, faults and failings. They do not ’have all the answers’,
though they may try to persuade us that they do!
As the Church, as God’s representatives here on earth, we have a
responsibility to pray for those who govern us – whether we like their
politics or not. A key prayer is to ask God for His wisdom to guide them
in their discussions, debates and decisions.
As the Church, as God’s representatives here on earth, we have a
responsibility to pray for those who govern us – whether we like their
politics or not.
If we want a Government that listens, takes good advice
and makes wise decisions – pray!
If we want a Government that is fair and just – pray!
If we want a Government that enables the country to
prosper, so we can afford to do all we need to do – pray!
If we want a Government (and a society) that really cares
for the poor, the disadvantaged, those who genuinely need
the ‘safety-net’ provided by the state – then pray!
Pray believing that your prayers will have an effect, because God’s word
teaches us, and many stories throughout history remind us…..Prayer changes things!

Safeguarding
If you volunteer within the church with either children or vulnerable
adults training is now mandatory. More training for volunteers is planned
for the autumn: Wednesday 13 September at 7pm in Blackhall St
Columba's.
If you wish to attend please advise our Safeguarding Co-ordinator Paula
Roots so that your place can be booked through Presbytery.
Chris Cameron, our Youth Worker, and Paula will be working on job
descriptions for all roles with children and young people, which are
overdue a review. This helps everyone to know what is expected of
volunteers.

Alpha coming back soon!
Our small team of seven people meet regularly to plan
and consider ways of reaching out to people. Last year we
ran a successful Alpha course jointly with South Queensferry and
Dalmeny churches. We are currently planning another Alpha, again to
start in September so look out for the information soon, in churches, on
buses and on TV adverts.
Alpha is now worldwide, having started in Holy Trinity in London as a way
of introducing people to God's Word and the promise of salvation
through Jesus Christ. The main elements include a meal, informal
welcome, a DVD on a different topic each week such as 'Who is Jesus?'
'How and why should I read the Bible?' - covering the themes of faith in
the modern world over 12 weeks. Everyone is welcome.

LITTLE COFFEE STOP
What am amazing season we have had in Little
Coffee Stop!
Friday mornings have been the usual controlled
mayhem of play, snack and song-time finished off
with our legendary Conga round the hall! We have been busy in terms
of activities too – the children decorated Easter bonnets which they wore
to church on Easter Sunday, we did Father’s Day cards and made some
amazing masterpieces for our “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” theme for Gala
Day. It was great to have so many families join us in the parade wearing
their hand-crafted star t-shirts and carrying their star wands – thank you
everyone for turning up on a cool damp day. Our visitors this term have
included Potty Emma and Gentle Beginnings. We are hoping to organise
some sessions with The Sleep Lady in the new term. We had a fun-filled
“Nursery Rhyme-themed Tea Party” in aid of Gala Funds on 9 June –
many of the children dressed as nursery rhyme characters and the
volunteers included Little Red Riding Hood, Mary Mary Quite Contrary
and Little Bo Peep. The children (and the adults!) enjoyed the games,
disco and puppets – heartfelt thanks to all who helped out in any way.
We were very touched by the Grenfell Tower tragedy and at our last LCS
of the season we donated our profits and had a collection and raised the
fantastic total of £140 for the Grenfell Nursery. Thanks to all who
contributed.
For the first time ever, we had a summer holiday event – on Monday 3rd
July, we had an afternoon Little Coffee Stop – and what a fabulous
afternoon we had! It did feel a bit strange not to have the aroma of
gently cooking bacon floating up the steps from the hall, but the home
baking definitely made up for it!
Our volunteers are amazing, committing their time and energy week
after week, going above and beyond to serve the under-fives and their
families living in our village (and a few other nearby locations).
We are also privileged to have so many wonderful grownups and
children that come along to participate and enjoy the Little Coffee Stop.
Just in case you haven’t visited us before, we would love to invite all

Dorcas
Dorcas lunches will start again on Tuesday 19 September in the Church
Centre at 12 noon.
We are looking forward to welcoming back our regulars, and hopefully
seeing some new faces joining us, for a nice lunch and a chat.
This is open to everyone, all ages, old and young. Come and give us a try,
bring a friend.. A warm welcome awaits
PRAY FOR THOSE IN GOVERNMENT
“I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and
thanksgiving be made for everyone – for kings and all those in
authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and
holiness. “

The year that started with the EU Referendum vote last June has ended
with a ‘snap’ General Election with a result no-one expected when the
campaign began – not just over the UK as a whole where no single party
has a majority at Westminster, but also in Scotland where the SNP’s total
of 56 MP’s from the 2015 election was reduced to 35 with corresponding
increases in the number of MP’s from other parties.
For at least the next 2 years we are in the ‘uncharted waters’ of the Brexit
negotiations to leave the European Union – a process which will have a
huge impact on all of our lives. Brexit has been called the most
important single event to affect the UK since World War II, something
that no country has done before.

Hi Everyone
Since I wrote my last article our men’s group have had two very enjoyable
outings, the first one being back in May when we went for a hearty
breakfast at a premier Inn in Dunfermline followed by two games of ten
pin bowling, as always it was a highly competitive affair with Brian Lane
emerging victorious after battling it out with the rest of the group so well
done Brian.
In June we had a trip to Houston driving range where
we had a go at golf, our very able teachers were none
other than Gordon McConnachie and Wilson Marshall
who both taught us some much needed lessons in
how to shoot the golf balls up on to the fairway, some
of us it has to be said picked it up a wee bit better than
others and Keith Moss in particular proved that even a
beginner can make it look easy, afterwards we went for
our well deserved breakfast, this time at Dobbies Garden Centre and once
again a good time was had by all. We haven’t quite decided yet whether
to have a summer break as we are now coming into holiday season and
most of our members have breaks already planned.
As always if you would like to join us for any of our activities you will be
very welcome, so please do come and speak to us on the techie desk on
any Sunday morning at church.

Fair Trade
By the time you read this the winter/Christmas
catalogues will be on their way and Traidcraft is no
exception. About half of our income is made in the last
three months of the year, mainly from the beautiful
crafts made in small workshops around the world. The
key to fair trade is that the farmers and crafts people
receive a fair price for their work, which includes a premium to allow
them to support their wider community. Usually this means they can
build a school or a health centre to improve opportunities for others,
especially girls and women.
The monthly stall is held after morning worship on the second Sunday of
each month, except November when it is the first Sunday so as not to
clash with Remembrance Day. Do come and see the variety and quality of
the products: there are usually free samples as well!

Down under
On a recent holiday in Australia I had the opportunity
to worship in the Scots Kirk in Colac, Victoria. It is a
small but enthusiastic congregation who extended a
warm welcome to this visiting Scot! They asked me to
speak in their 'sharing slot' about the church in
Scotland. There are some differences worship is
supported by an accordion player and they pray for ill or housebound
members by name. They also go out for Sunday lunch together regularly!
Their similarity to Kirkliston is preaching which is biblical and powerful,
with a focus on prayer. God is surely working in their town through their
ministry.

Kirkliston Guild
At our A.G.M. in March, we presented quite a few of our
members with 25 years and 40 years long service badges.
The remaining ladies were not left out and were all given
guild member badges.
At our Spring Tea in April we were entertained by the
local accordion band which everyone enjoyed.
Later that month, Joan, Liz and Valerie took part in the Christian Aid
Bridge walk and raised £707, many thanks to all our sponsors.
We continue to collect milk bottle tops and stamps for recycling, and
nationally guild members collected £3620 worth. This money went
towards research at The Borders Hospital.
In May the ladies enjoyed a day trip to Floors Castle, which everyone
enjoyed despite the weather.
We start our new session on 13 September, and new members will be
most welcome. This year’s theme is Go in Love
