Hello All,

By the time this magazine is in your hands we will be back on course, and on time with each and every edition in the future. The past 70 days our staff has gotten this magazine back in the hands of our membership on time and with quality information. We always strive to get articles to print and high-resolution pictures from a camera or a cell phone that we are able to print for our membership. Tell us about your region and what is going on!! We would love to print articles about your region.

Each month on the 2nd Wednesday, all National Officers have a conference call. It is a wonderful informal meeting to keep all lines of communication open. As we progress, we’re looking for ways we can get this information down to the members. It seems that there is a bottle neck at the regional level, we can’t seem to get to the weekend trialer like we want to. We want each and every member to know exactly what is going on with YOUR organization. If your region has a web site please ask the web master to make sure this information gets put on and made available to you, the back bone of our organization. If you have anything you would like brought up before our monthly meeting, contact your national board rep and let them know. I guarantee you, your voice will be heard.

Kristy Goodall (MN) had the fantastic idea of a calendar to show every trial in every region and Mikael Mulberry is almost ready to provide on line judging re certification. Our members asked for this and we are on the verge of providing. When you see them, thank them both.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention our New Amateur Program being developed. As we speak, J.W. Collins (KY) and his committee are building the foundation for an Amateur format from 1st time placement, to National Amateur Champion, it will be unveiled at the Trial of Champions national meeting and you are going to Love it!!

The word is out, 149 entrees for the Quail Invitational, that puts 21 dogs on the bye list, OUTSTANDING!! Florida region is always a very gracious host and this is shaping up to be a fantastic trial. Hope to see all there, and if you can’t make it, follow it on line. Marilyn and Nina are on top of it all. Safe travels and good luck to you all!

The Regional Elimination trial will be based on regularly scheduled regionals for each year and only one regional can count per year. Regionals scheduled or rescheduled to be held after June 1 will apply to the previous year. For national trials, a dog must make the Saturday cut to receive a qualifying score. Each national trial will have a point value of 800 points. The value will drop 25 points per placement throughout the Saturday cut (1 – 800, 2 - 775, 3 – 750, etc.). In addition, 100 bonus points will be awarded to the Champion, 75 for second place, 50 for third and 25 for fourth. Each regional elimination will have a point value of 600 points. The value will drop 25 points per placement until the last dog or points run out (1 – 600, 2 – 575, 3 – 550, etc.). In addition, 100 points will be awarded to the Champion, 75 for the second place dog, 50 for the third and 25 for fourth. ARKANSAS/LOUISIANA REGION

The National Shoot To Retrieve Association (NSTRA) was founded by a group of dedicated bird hunters looking for a way to extend the fun they enjoyed with their bird dogs after their season ended. Field Trials, under hunting

conditions, were the answer. Field Trials provide an extended the season, a sportsmanlike environment and competition with others who enjoy bird dogs.

Send all Regional Trial information, highlights and photos to NSTRA office to be placed in the next publication.

Our apologies to the AR/LA members for omitting this article in the Regional Elimination issue.

Arkansas / Louisiana Region Elimination by Robert FranksSnow in Arkansas in April? Well it happened at the Arkansas/Louisiana

Regional trial held in Lavaca on April 7 & 8, 2018. Yes, trialers awoke to snow, sleet and very cold temperatures on Saturday morning. The cold of Saturday moderated Sunday to produce a pleasant day for the finals.

The festivities began Friday night as the region treated trialers and their families to a catered BBQ supper Friday night followed by a Calcutta.

Saturday’s opening trial was kicked off at 7:00 am by President Donnie Parker. Sixty-two dogs answered the bell which may very well be the largest regional trial in NSTRA. Dogs advancing were: Ziva-Heaton, Tootsie-Hildebrand, Hawk-Moser, Otter-Newman, Bones-Hildebrand, Jill-Nutt, Chance-Prince, Cat-Pharr, Brut-Hildebrand, Lottie-Small, Belle-Cloud, Shiloh-Newman, Pepper-Hildebrand, Gator-Prince, Max-Pharr, Jabba-Small, Jack-Kemper, Penny-Barnett, Ruby-Daniels, Curt-Green, Jill-Parker, Tonk - Moser, Buster-Branch, Dottie-Imboden, Bo-Jackson, Little Man-Fox, Finny-Franks, Gauge-Hildebrand, Gator-Prince.

Saturday evening was started off by a steak supper provided by the region for trialers and their families followed by an awards ceremony. The awards were as follows:

One Time Amateur Champion – Silver TrayDaisy – L.D. Moser, Rufus – Deb and Roger Meline, Mr. Ed – Cray

String, Daisy – L.D.Moser, Laser – Lewis Burson, Jesse – Robert BlairOne Time Open Champion – Gist Award BuckleFinny – Robert Franks, Tank –Curtis Futch and Jeremy Cloud, Lippy –

Roger and Deb Meline, Gonzo – Rob DanielsArkansas / Louisiana Hall of Fame – Prince’s Ginger Grace – Chad

PrinceHigh Point Dog – Smokey, Robert FranksThe Newcomer of the Year award went to Nancy Barnett. Nancy is not

only an asset to the NAQC and region but is becoming a great handler. She was a very easy choice for newcomer of the year after showing the more seasoned handlers in the region a thing or two. Her bright smile and happy personality are appreciated by all.

Sportsman of the Year went to a young at heart old head. Bobby Green has been trialing ever since I can remember. In that period of time I have never heard him say a negative word about anyone. He is happy to place a dog and happy when another handler does the same. A trial in the AR/LA region is not a trial unless Bobby is there.

The two fields Saturday were named in memorial for erstwhile trialers Carroll Evans and Charlie Henry. Both gentlemen were around when the Arkansas/Louisiana region was created and genuinely loved trials and the people connected with them. All attending were honored to have Carroll’s family attend the Saturday trial and present the Carroll Evans Memorial Trophy to David Hildebrand whose dog won the field.

Saturday’s placements were: Carroll Evans Memorial Field – First: Brut-Hildebrand, Second: Shiloh-Newman, Third: Ziva-Heaton. In the Charlie Henry Memorial Field – First: Gauge-Hildebrand, Second: Otter-Newman, Third: Mojo-Kemper.

The final placements were hard fought. Fourth place went to Jill and her handler Donnie Parker. Jill is a very polite dog who has plenty of bottom. She handles superbly for Donnie and seems to always find birds.

Third place went to Dale Heaton and Ziva. Ziva is very snappy and eager to find birds. She covers her ground quickly always to the front.

Sadie was second for her handler Rob Daniels. She is owned by Don Markham. Sadie may not be as quick as she once was but she has made up for this with bird sense. She was constantly at the right place at the right time to find lots of birds.

The Champion was Pepper owned and handled by David Hildebrand. Pepper is snappy and classy. She is well behaved and hunts hard in the right places for birds. She runs to the front and seldom behind her brace mate. Her championship was well received for her hard working handler David Hildebrand.

Many thanks to President Donnie Parker for his hard work. The members and families of the WestArk Club are to be commended on putting on another flawless trial. Special thanks to LaRonda Jacobs for her countless hours helping and cleaning.

The region thanks all involved. n

It was sometime in May of 2011 and my good friend Pat called me. “John”, he said, “I have a litter on the ground and there is this liver female that is gonna turn some heads, I’m saving her for you, come over and see her” Pat has been breeding quality German Shorthairs for well over 40 years and has developed a solid breeding lineage. Mostly known in the NAVHDA and CKC world he would produce exceptional dogs each and every time. He also competed in NSTRA in the 80’s for a short while in Southern Ontario. Unfortunately, the trials never lasted in this region and from then on there were none available in that area.

I went to his place and sure enough there was something special about this little pup. Her tail had a unique curve to it and she had a killer nose on pigeons, a high head and carried herself with confidence. “I’ll take her Pat” I said. At the time I was a fairly novice trainer and still learning myself. I put all my time and energy into my new pup which I named “Lexi”. I read training books, watched DVD’s, built training tables and many other things to assist me in my training. I didn’t want to mess this up. Pat had a naming system for the registration names and would follow the alphabet so he knew by each letter when that specific litter was produced and who the Sire/Dam were. He told me I MUST name it with a letter “H” and so I named her Hellraiser. “Baronburg’s Hellraiser” it became. As she progressed, she did indeed turn some heads in the local CKC Field tests and NAVHDA. A very easily trainable dog that didn’t need many corrections, she just kind of clicked from the start. I had opportunities to hunt her out West for Hungarian Partridge/Sharptail Grouse, as well as Northern Ontario for Grouse and Woodcock. She earned her NAVHDA Natural Ability with a Prize 1 at a young age of 13 months. Fast forward several years….she is on top of her game earning her CKC FDX Ch. Title with mainly high scores and top dog awards each day. She was on fire and at that time decided to breed her at the ripe age of 6. She gave us 5 beautiful pups with great temperaments, all of them earning Prize 1’s. and earning us a breeders award.

It was then that I knew we needed something more for her, a new challenge and something different but what? I always wanted to run what were known to me as “field trials”. Never knew exactly what was involved but heard they were quite competitive as opposed to running against a certain testing standard and earning titles that way. However, I always felt the distance for these events was a factor as many others in the area felt the same and nobody really participated in them. I started to research NSTRA and it sounded pretty cool, exactly what I was looking for, find birds, shoot and retrieve! I reached out to the VP Mikeal and we had a good chat. I said Mikeal I would love to help promote NSTRA with the help of my company Canadian Gun Dog Supply and get it back into our region “Southern Ontario Canada” He loved the idea and directed me to the president of the Central Canada chapter Etienne Lavoie in Quebec. Again I had a chance to speak with Etienne and he thought this was a great idea but said “John why don’t you

come out to my event next month and see if you like it first of all, see what NSTRA is really like, enter a dog or just watch” Reluctant at first I thought about it and said why not? And so, it began. I entered 2 dogs in amateur runs at his place. My wife and I drove 10 hrs+ to get there, actually it was like 14 hours due to accidents and road closures but boy were we impressed. We discovered friendly folks with a “no nonsense” attitude. One of the first things that caught my eye was a sign that was posted and read

“To ensure an enjoyable experience for all participants, judges, bird handlers, and field marshals, please limit your comments to positive remarks. Negative feedback needs to be addressed to the trial chairman, not the crowd.”

NO bad language. We’ve come to run our dogs, not our mouths.

That’s when I turned to my wife and said “I think we are gonna like this” I entered and ran 2 dogs Lexi and Milo. Both senior level dogs with tons of experience in hunt tests and wild birds. Lexi was our best dog and “our leader” as we called her. This NSTRA thing sounded pretty simple, find birds, shoot and retrieve them, simple stuff so we went with the intention of kickin some butt. By the end of the weekend we went home with our tail between our legs as they say. What a wake-up call.

We didn’t place and didn’t do well at all. This was all new, the first issue was quail. We are not permitted to use Quail for training in Ontario without proper permits so the majority of birds used are always Chukar. The second issue, was learning the system and strategy and we quickly learned there was a lot of strategy involved. The last and most important aspect was endurance, our dogs were simply burnt out in the heat and not used to this. I quickly discovered that, in my opinion, endurance was far more important than a good nose. If you can outlast the competition and cover more ground you are in a considerably better position to place. We had a wonderful weekend, meet some great folks, had some laughs and explained how we can help expand this lovely chapter into Southern Ontario. We just knew we had to get NSTRA back into our region. With the help of my company Canadian Gun Dog Supply I knew we had the influence to help promote the sport.

In the meantime I knew what had to be done going forward if we were to advance and have a placement. I upped the ante and challenged myself to improve the dog’s endurance first and foremost and started roading them with the ATV. I remember everything my mentor told me while in the field and wrote that down and studied it. I payed close attention to their nutrition, found places to train with quail and my efforts were beginning to show. We travelled to Quebec 2 more times this past summer and had Lexi finally place a 3rd in amateur class. My girl was finally getting the hang of this game.

With the help of a few members and volunteers we success-fully held a NSTRA mock trial and handlers’ clinic on Sept

1, 2018 in Orangeville, Ontario. We invited anyone that was interested in the sport to come out, compete, run the course and just have fun understanding what NSTRA is about. What a great turnout with 9 braces and a ton of learning for all. A complete success. As part of Central Canada chapter we are now plan-ning an official trail in the September 2019 timeframe (pending approval). This should be a huge event hosted at a premier game farm in close proximity to some US chapters thus giving close access to other US chapter members. Overall NSTRA has given us the ability to keep our dogs in shape throughout the summer months and allowing us to keep reaching for higher goals. The sky truly is the limit and anything can happen at any given event. That’s what makes it so exciting! We were completely ready for the 2019 season to get going so we could showcase our improve-ments and disaster struck.

On Dec 9, 2018 at about 1:00 am my prize possession, Lexi, developed bloat and resulted in a twisted stomach. Time was against her and at the young age of 7, we made the painful decision to put her at peace. And so, a chapter ends but another chapter begins…so much to look forward to and have Lexi’s pups shine in the wonderful world of NSTRA.

“My baby girl Lexi, we had so much more to get done but I guess you must be needed somewhere else. You made me so proud with all your accomplishments and gave us a beautiful litter of pups to carry your legacy. You took us to a level I never thought possible for someone like myself. I was always humbled by your presence in the field. I was even more humbled seeing you have your first litter and watching over your babies. My heart hurts so much right now, the only thing I have are your babies to remind me of you. Please watch over us and make sure we do things right. We have much work to do and I really needed your help more than ever. From here on out everything we do as a kennel and team will be in your honor, to remember you and to thank you for all you have given us. Rest peacefully my girl. Keep all those birds pinned to the ground the way you always do, remember high head and 12 o’clock tail, cause that’s what we do!. We will re-unite one day. Until then, I love you and I miss you and will never forget you! Baronburg’s Hellraiser FDX Ch., NA1, 2011 – 2018”

2018 NSTRA NATIONAL DOY CHAMPIONSHIPThe 2018 Dog of Year Championship Trial was held on October 24-October 27th at the Conservation Birddog Club in Amo, Indiana with trialers participating from throughout the United States and Canada. Fall landscapes were at their peak with splendid orange, yellow and red trees afire with color. A pretrial was held on Saturday thru Monday hosted by the Conservation Birddog Club chaired by Wayne Fishburn. Tuesday was a practice day with birds provided to those interested in practicing on their respective field. Many call this trial the most exclusive trial held in NSTRA; the Cinderella trial. One point will get you to your regional elimination and one point can get you to the DOY. National officers Mikeal Mulberry and Marilyn Cunningham met with trial officials explaining boundaries and safety areas. Officials from Georgia were Bodie Ray and Stan Perdue as judges and Casey Perdue as birdhandler. Illinois judges officiating were Kevin Sprick, Mark Kohlberg and Ron Huels, with Ron Becker handling birds and Lori Sprick as field marshal. Donny Parker from Arkansas was the 6th judge, with Brenda Barr (WTX) and Deb Heaton (LST) marshalling throughout the week and trial coordinator Nina Harmon (KY). The birddog club served breakfast and lunch throughout the week with great chili and chicken noodle soup as just one day’s menu. Wednesday dawned a perfect day for trialing with cool temperatures but sun throughout the day. Kevin, Mark and Lori officiated on A field with Ron placing birds throughout the field. The above 3 qualification rounds were to be the last on the 3 fields. So after a short break for lunch, the stage was set for the last three ½ hour braces, all ran on A field. Judges would be Bodie, Stan with Ron handling birds and Lori marshalling. All 6 handlers would be asked to go to the blind for the planting of the first brace with the running as follows:

1. Auggie – Jack Little – 661 – 4th runner-up Ryder – Bruce Murphy – 891.5 **

2. Bree – Bill Sumpter – 818.5 – 2nd runner-up Colt – Etienne Lavoie – 665 – 3rd runner-up

3. Jimmy – Scott Townsend – 867** Coupe - Jim Thomas- 357 – 5th runner-up

All was ready for the final hour with Scott and Bruce taking a much needed rest – not so sure about the dogs, they seemed to have energy left over. Trophies and Pro Plan from Purina was presented to Jack and Jim during the hour break.

Fifth runner-up was Jim Thomas – Indiana Region with Zeus Little Deuce Coupe (Coupe) – 4 year old GSP/ from Ragin Cajun Zeus and Wild Thing O’Riley. Coupe is a 5x NSTRA Champion and no doubt we’ll be hearing more from this fine German Shorthair. Congratulations Jim and Coupe

Fourth runner-up was Bluegrass Ramblin Man (Auggie) – B/M – owned and handled by Jack Little. Auggie is a 4 yearold Kentucky Region dog and 1x NSTRA Champion. His sire is Rhoades Woods Loki7 and dam is Ty’s Money Shot. Our congratulations to Jack and Auggie ending up 4th runner-up out of 192 dogs.

Third runner-up hailed from our northern neighbor, Canada. Smith’s Shadow Oak Colt “Colt”, a 3 year old ES/M is owned and handled by Etienne Lavoie, Central Canada Region. Colt is from Shadow Oak Bo and Stinnett’s Comanche Bell. He is a 2x NSTRA Champion with 48 first place and 24 other points. Colt’s first placement came in February, 2018 at a CFFT trial. Later that month, he also placed during a qualification round of the 2018 QI Championship. Colt won 3rd at the Central Canada Regional Finals and picked up 2 – 2nd place wins at the 2018 DOY pre-trial. Hats off to Etienne, Manar and Colt for a fabulous week at the DOY.

Finishing as 2nd runner-up was Fort’s Bird Angel “Bree”, 4 year old ES/F owned and handled by Bill Sumpter, MidWest Region.

Bree is from 3x NSTRA Champion Phipp’s Linking the Past and 6x NSTRA Champion Phipps’ Bird Desire. Bree has accumulated 66 lifetime points of which 21 are first place points and is a 3 time NSTRA Champion. She earned her first placement at a Rock Creek Trial in Waverly, NE on 10/1/17. That same year she finished in 2 qualification runs at the DOY continuing on to a 2018 qualification run at the UKC Performance trial. In September 2018, Bree was the 1st runner-up at the Purina Endurance Championship and besides her 3rd place finish at the DOY Championship, she also placed 1st in a qualification round the day before. Our sincere best wishes to Bill and Bree.

Mark and Kevin would judge the Championship round with Ron Huels and Lori marshalling while Casey would handle the birds for the extended A & B fields combined. This would amount to approximately 80 acres with wonderful cover (our thanks to the CBDC). Scott with Jimmy and Bruce with Ryder would enter the blind at approximately 3 o’clock and from the starting line it was “tit for tat” during entire brace. Some said they witnessed one of the best final hours in NSTRA history. When the “dust “cleared we learned that Ryder had scored on 4 finds – 84,85,88,87; retrieves – 85,85,A85,A85; 68.5 obedience; 87.5 ground coverage; and 66 back totaling 906 points. Jimmy had scored on 6 finds – 90,90,94,94,88,86; retrieves of 84,80,80,80,82,A81.2; obedience – 65; ground coverage 87 points totaling 1181.2 points to become NSTRA’s newest National Champion – the Champion of our exclusive Dog of the Year Championship.

presentation, Scott and Bruce did grab a few moments to rest and let down after quite a final hour. Mikeal, Mike Botts, Dion and Nina were on hand for the trophy presentation. Dion presented each of the Final 4 with the exclusive DOY metal art depicting the placement and trial name; Mike made the presentation of dog food and jackets to each owner/handler with 450# of Pro Plan to Scott, 225# to Bruce, 112# to Bill and 112# to Etienne. Each also received a $50 gift certificate from Alan Davidson with Dogs Unlimited, Trophies and Belt Buckles from NSTRA, Gift Certificates from Gun Dog Supply. Mike presented Scott with the Garmin 550 plus collar from Garmin and gift certificates to the other 3 handlers.

Murph's Mohawk's Ryder is a 6 year-old English Setter male owned and handled by Bruce Murphy- MidWest Region. Ryder is a 7x NSTRA Champion and a NSTRA National Champion. He has 140 total lifetime points of which 89 are first place points. Ryder is from War Wagon’s Rocky Boy and Loneridge Independence. Ryder earned his 7 championships from October 2014 to September 2018. His first placement was at a Rock Creek weekend trial. He has also place during 16 championship qualification rounds. In addition, Ryder was 3rd runner-up at the 2016 UKC Performance Championship, won the MW Regional Championship in 2017, was 1st runner-up at the 2017 DOY Championship and won the 2018 UKC Classic Championship. Ryder is always a tough contender and take trophies home from most trials in which he participates. Congratulations to Bruce, Carrie and Ryder for a great week and stupendous final hour run.

THE WINNER: The 2018 Dog of the Year National Champion was Crosswind Jim, a young, impressive English Pointer Male owned and handled by Scott Townsend, Michigan Region. Jim is from Mahoney’s Magic Jack and Singleshot Cinnamon. Mahoney’s Magic Jack was a 3x NSTRA Champion and it looks real certain that Jimmy will be following in his sire’s tracks. Scott has served as the Michigan Region president and 1st Vice-President of the NSTRA National Association for 3 terms. He also has 2 other National Championships under his belt – 16x NSTRA Champion Crosswind Truckin Fritz who won the 2010 TOC Championship + 2 QF Championships and 9x NSTRA Champion Crosswind Micro Chip winner of the 2013 QI Championship. So we can safely say that Jimmy is a work in progress and will most likely be in the winner’s circle again and again. He is now a 2x NSTRA Champion with 44 total points of which 28 are 1st place points. Jimmy’s first championship came on 3/18/18 and followed with his 2nd on 9/2/18. His first placement was at Wooster, Ohio in March, 2017. In May, 2019 he won the Michigan Regional Championship and placed 2nd during a qualification round of the 2017 DOY Trial. In 2018 Jimmy won 2nd runner-up during the Michigan Regional also placing In a qualification round of the UKC Performance Championship. He placed 2nd during the MI-OH Region Challenge and 2nd during the Rock Creek Labor Day Pre-Trial in September. Our sincere congratulations to this dynamic duo, Scott and Jimmy.

Per Scott which he had recently wrote to his vet “It took me a couple years to rebuild after unexpectedly losing Chip to that elbow injury. I just kind of lucked into running across Jimmy at a

trial I was at in Ohio. A friend of mine owned him; he was running Jimmy for his first time in a field trial. Jimmy didn’t find a bird. My brace followed Jimmy's so I sat in my truck and watched this young 10 month old run around the field and pretty much act like the puppy he was. I commented on how nice he looked and ran into my friend later that day. He caught the attention of another friend of mine who happened to be judging that day; he also commented on how well he ran and looked.

Well, around a month later Jimmy's owner called me and asked me if I would be interested in buying Jimmy. I was actually looking for a young pointer at the time so we spoke and settled on a price and I bought Jimmy at 11 months old. The first thing I did was was quit trialing him. I didn't think he was ready for that just yet. I worked with Jimmy at home in the training field for a couple months and then took him to a trial and managed to take second place. That placement qualified him for the 2017 Michigan region elimination trial. All dogs have to have placement points to run in that trial. Two months later Jimmy ran in that elimination trial and won it at 14 months old. It was then that I knew I had an exceptionally talented young dog.

I spent the remainder of 2017 and part of 2018 working with Jimmy. Much of it struggling to get him to understand that he wasn't a one-man band and that he had to handle and cooperate with me during these field trials. He had numerous placements during that time-frame but he struggled to maintain any kind of consistency, which is really pretty common for a dog of that age, he and I plugged away at the trial circuit, picked up some points along the way, got our licks in when we could and got beat when we couldn't.

In 2018 at just over 2 years old Jimmy placed high enough in the Mi Region Elimination trial to qualify for the 2018 NSTRA Dog of the Year Trial held every year the last week in Oct. Jimmy up to this point had shown me he had huge drive and looked beautiful on point, but he still lacked the focus of a veteran field trial dog that could put together a string of good consistent runs. However, in the month of September I started to notice a change in Jimmy's attitude and some of his puppy traits leaving him.

October rolled around and grouse hunting season in Michigan opened up. I have always felt that wild bird hunting does wonders for my field trial dogs so I take them bird hunting when I get the opportunity. This was actually Jimmy's second season in the grouse woods. I spent 10 days straight grouse hunting Jimmy most of those days along with several other dogs I took along with me. At this point he certainly wasn’t an expert on those birds but he was able to get a fair share of the grouse and woodcock pointed and held.

We came back from hunting on Oct 15th 2018 and started preparing for the 2018 Dog of the Year Nationals starting on the 24th. Saturday the 20th I was able to pick up a couple braces in a trial in the Ohio region; Jimmy's performance on those two runs were outstanding and once again I said he looks like he is finally growing up.

Dog of the Year trial started on Wednesday the 24th, 192 dog entrants. It just seemed like every time Jimmy ran his brace he got

better and better. He competed the rest of the week advancing with each round ending up in the last 36 dogs remaining to run off on Saturday. On Saturday Jimmy ran three 30 minute braces, each time advancing to the next round by outscoring the other dogs running in his bracket. After three rounds only two dogs remained to run in the final one hour brace.

The final brace was against a friend of mine who is a true competitor with a super nice English Setter named Ryder. Bruce and Ryder are a great team and actually won the Purina Endurance Nationals in June of 2018.

So Ryder and Jimmy squared off in an 80 acre field planted with ten birds. It was a great brace Ryder and Jimmy went bird for bird for the better part of the brace but at the end of the brace Jimmy came out on top on scores. It was a thrill to run against Bruce and Ryder and I am proud that Jimmy has come full circle and has the tools and talent to hold his own against the likes of Bruce and Ryder and numerous other extremely talented dog and handler teams.

A first in NSTRA History is the fact that Scott Townsend has won

every NSTRA National Championship we hold, plus Crosswind Trucking Fritz won 2 Quail Forever National Championships in consecutive years. So when you see Scott, give him a pat on the back for a FIRST in the 42 years of NSTRA’s history. Well done Scott and congratulations from all of us at NSTRA.

It was another good trial, meeting new people and visiting with old friends. Seemed to be several young handlers with us during the trial and that’s a good thing. Speaking of younger people, our scholarship auction brought in $2,420 and our thanks to all who helped and contributed.

It was sad news to hear of the passing of Bill Sumpter’s wife Arlene. She was a sweet lady and always there to watch Bill and his dogs and will surely be missed.

Thanks to J.R. Coke for his help in making sure the fields were right, 4-wheelers were provided for the judges and thanks to the entire CBDC for all their help. Also, thanks to Dolly Cloud for stepping up when we needed a substitute field marshal. No questions asked, she just jumped right in. And also, to Mark Kohlberg for judging the trial and accepting no pay, nor mileage. Now that’s devotion to our sport.

It was good to have Todd Kellam, Mike Botts, and Dion Bliss on hand representing Purina, United Kennel Club and Red Haw Supply. As mentioned before, these sponsors spend many dollars with our association and we need to support them whenever possible.

And as always, a big thanks to our trial officials who are the backbone of any National Trial. No matter if it’s rain or shine, these people carry on doing their best to keep everything running on an even keel and scoring as fair as they know possible. We can’t say enough about this group. Once the trial begins, there’s little doubt that they can handle pretty much any situation. Thanks again for all you do for the association and the trial chairmen. It makes their job so much easier and comfortable.

Until next time, have a great trial and wild bird season. n

The Arkansas/Louisiana Region lost a treasure in Mr. Jimmy Ferguson of Dubach, Louisiana on December 20, 2018. He is survived by his brother Larry Ferguson who was also active in NSTRA for many years.

Jimmy had a kind caring demeanor and a big smile when greeting his friends in his unmistakable southern accent. He had many friends and no enemies. Speaking only good words about others he was a very popular member of the region. A member of the Benton and Bistineau Bird Hunt-ers Clubs he was a fixture either judging or running a dog. He was most always accompanied by his brother Larry, and the two of them were referred to as “the brothers”. Jimmy had a way, when judging, to make every handler feel good about their dog even when the performance was not quite up to standards.

Perhaps Jimmy’s best dog was Jim’s Trump out of two very good parents, McGregor’s Prudhoe’s Bay and Fid-dler’s Nell Simpson.

Things will be different not seeing Jimmy at McDon-alds early on a Saturday morning before the annual Green Acres Trail in Farmerville, Louisiana, greeting his friends before making the short drive to Marion for the trial.

Jimmy now joins a growing number of founders of the Arkansas/Louisiana Region running dogs in eternity. May your dog’s always good ones, your friends be near and the wind be to your back. Rest in peace. n

WANTED:A Few Good Leaders …

Effective with the constitution change approved February of 2002, NSTRA will elect the offices of 2nd Vice President and Secretary this year. These officers will then begin serving their three-year term the Sunday after the annual Dog of the Year Trial.

Selecting the right candidates is very important and is the duty of a nominating committee appointed by the President. This election year, Greg Wood will be the chairman of our nominating committee and will be assisted by Todd Hendrix, Mike Stotts, Randy Schultz and Jr. Coke. Below you will find their phone numbers and e-mail addresses in order to contact them regarding running for a position.

If you are interested in becoming a candidate for these elected positions, contact one of these committee members as soon as possible but before May 30.

The official duties of the officers are listed in the Bylaws, but their duties go far beyond what is listed. Our officers spend considerable time working to improve our organization and most often their effort is little noticed. The officers meet a minimum of two times each year at the April and October meetings in Plainfield. They usually plan their meetings around our championship trials so they can reduce the travel expenses and to spend time visiting with our members to learn how to make NSTRA the best it can be. In addition, there are several conference calls and often meetings at other national trials.

NSTRA is always looking for leaders who have the time to donate and have skills that will benefit our organization. If you would like to be considered, contact Greg Wood or another nominating committee member. But be forewarned, the officers of NSTRA are required to do real work and lots of it. Being a NSTRA officer is a huge commitment of time and there is no compensation for any of our officers other than reimbursement for travel expenses to official meetings. The reward comes from being able to see good ideas blossom into reality and to provide our members the opportunity to enjoy the sport of dog trialing and their membership in NSTRA.
