INTERNET

Page 4: 2024 Future of Communication Technology

The effort to globalize the internet is just beginning in

2014. Threat of cyber terrorism and internet security

issues will probably inhibit this initiative. These credible

concerns will likely result in national services monitored

by each homeland government. By 2024 one outcome

seems most imminent, Public Internet. Government run

and funded by American tax dollars it will be equally

available to all. I hope I’m incorrect and we will still

enjoy privatized net neutrality and relative transparency

in the United States.

Uses and Gratifications Theory

Social behavior theory that states participants use technology

to attain certain goals. Users are empowered by their choices

instead of victims of media effects.

“Three main categories of gratifications:

Content: Uses for the Internet include the need for

researching or finding specific information or material,

which are gratified with content.

Process: Users gain gratification from the experience of

purposeful navigating or random browsing of the Internet in

its functional process.

Social: Uses encompass a wide range of forming and

deepening social ties.”

Moore’s Innovation Adoption Rate

In the near future many serious health conditions will be

monitored and possibly remotely controlled by web

enabled medical implants. The “Graying of America “ and

public insurance will necessitate a need for innovative

healthcare procedures. Estimates of more than 72M older

Americans by 2030 almost doubles today’s elderly

population total. By 2024 we will have crossed the chasm

from early adopters to early or late majority adopters.

Critical Mass Theory

Universal access is the stage of Critical Mass Theory

when the media has completely saturated the

population. In 2014 we have already reached the

“tipping point” in which more users have adopted the

technology than not. I believe by 2024 almost everyone

on our planet will be internet enabled by mobile devices.

These users’ will control almost all aspects of their daily

lives with this technology. A current United Nations’

study has revealed more people have cell phones than

have access to toilets. That last statistic is a sobering

divination of the future priority of this pervasive media.
